In recognition of his awe-inspiringefforts Steven was one of sevenrecipients of a Heart Hero Award.Steven says: “I’m really pleased to getthis award and it’s good to getrecognition of what’s really been ateam effort with friends and family.Sometimes it takes losing someoneclose to you to realise that youshould do something to make adifference to your own life andto others.”

Steven did it for his Mum

When Jake was born, there was nosign there was anything wrong butwhen a community midwife visited, instinct told her there was aproblem. Jake was rushed intohospital for emergency open surgeryat just five days old - diagnosed withTransposition of the Great Arteries,a condition in which the two mainarteries of the heart are backto front.

Due to complications Jake’s chesthad to be left open, but at just tendays old, he had a further operationto close his chest. Thankfully Jakerecovered from his operation and

was allowed to leave hospital, to theimmense joy of his family.

Jake has since made an incrediblerecovery and is now happy, healthyand mischievous.

Jake’s mum, Lisa, told us “Unless youhave had personal experience of heartdisease, it is difficult to comprehendthe importance and relevance of thework of the BHF.Withoutdevelopments in heart surgery, Jakewould not have survived this condition30 years ago.”

do it for children like JakeOver 4,600 children are born with congenital heart disease everyyear. Baby Jake was one of these.

Lesley is just 42 and despite being so young and in good health she had herfirst heart attack at 36. Luckily she received the treatment she needed andduring her recovery was so impressed with the work of the BHF that shedecided to organise a fundraising event at her parent’s Edinburgh pub and aHalloween Party - supported by the local fundraising office.

Keith from Derby was inspired to arrange a charity football match after hisfriend, Mark, died of a heart attack – “We thought the best way to honourour football mad friend was to hold a charity football match to raise moneyfor the BHF and remember him. We went about contacting local footballplayers and asking them to get involved. They were really keen to help andonce we had the teams we got loads of advice from the local fundraisingteam as to how to book venues and start selling the tickets”.
