Dear Parents/Guardians: Welcome to the 2021/2022 school year! We are providing this student planner/handbook as a way for you to help your child achieve success at Dryden Middle School. Developing planning skills is an important part of your child’s education, and you can be a part of their skill development in this area. Please take a few minutes to review the pages of this planner with your child. In the following pages you will find useful information for both you and your student about Dryden Middle School including: school calendar, quick guide to services, helpful skills, and class period schedules (normal, ½ day, assembly schedule and 1 or 2 hour delays). The remainder of the book is devoted to planning pages for your child. Each page represents a school week, and spaces are provided for eight different classes. Students will be encouraged to make notations in each box for each class attended; including what was covered in class and what upcoming assignments are due for that particular subject. In addition, we have included the student code of conduct and the school-wide expectations. It is our goal that every student enrolled at Dryden Middle School clearly understands the school-wide expectations of “being responsible, being respectful, and being safe.” As a collective staff, we want to both recognize students for “doing the right thing” (Caught! rewards), along with holding those accountable that do not abide by the code of conduct as outlined in this planner. We welcome your parental involvement in offering our students the best educational experiences we can provide. With that in mind, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any additional questions and/or concerns about this handbook.
Respectfully,
Lora Champlain Greg Harris Principal Assistant Principal

Parent Portal may be used to:
Track individual student progress
Email teachers
Review student course schedule
Reference discipline referrals
Track missing assignments
Please be mindful that teachers use different time frames for entering grades into their electronic grade book.
Please consider:
When not physically well, it is important to stay home.
In case of an absence or illness, it is the stu-dent’s responsibility to make up missed work from each teacher.
If a student will be absent for three or more days, please notify the Main Office
Participation in extracurricular activities is a privilege dependent upon school perfor-mance and grades.
There will be four marking periods throughout the school year. Interim reports will be issued every five weeks to help monitor progress. If you have specific questions regarding your child’s academic standing after checking Parent Portal, please contact your child’s teachers
SCHOOL BUS REGULATIONS

GENERAL INFORMATION
If School is Closed or Delayed:
Do NOT call the school. Check local radio or television news stations, District website, or sign up for our School Messenger.
Absences from School:
Parents may request that a student be excused from school for all or part of a school day.
Only school authorities (principal or nurse) may legally excuse a student.
A note from a parent/guardian is always necessary. Education law recognizes the following legal absences:
Illness or injury
Medical, dental, appointments
Family emergency, which requires the stu-dent’s presence
Death in the immediate family
Certain religious holidays
Please note that during this time we are asking that if a student is not feeling physically well, it is important that they stay home and complete as-signments virtually as needed.
Emergency Drills:
A number of emergency drills will be held during the year. It is important that you think of each of these drills as though it were a real emergen-cy. Your classroom teachers will tell you what corridors and exits to use. Emergency plans are posted near the door inside each classroom. Voice level 0 is expected during the drills because in a real emergency you need to hear special instruc-tions.
Library Regulations / Procedures:
The library is open both before and after school from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The library is to be used for reference work and leisure reading.
A quiet atmosphere will be maintained.
No eating or drinking in the library
All students are required to have an individual pass, whether coming from academic lab or from a class. Passes are stamped as a student enters the library and as he or she leaves.
Students are usually asked to limit their selec-tion to three books for borrowing. Books are

POLICIES & INFORMATION
TITLE IX It shall be the policy of the Dryden Central School Board of Education to comply with all provisions of Title IX of the Educational Amendments. Said amendment specifies “No person shall on the basis of sex be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” The Dryden Central School District hereby advises students, parents, employees and the general public that it offers employment and educational opportunities including career and technical education opportunities without regard to age, color, disability, ethnicity, marital status, national origin, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, political af-filiation, or veteran status. Inquiries regarding the nondiscrimination whether it involves a Title IX issue (discrimination on the basis of gender) or a Section 504 or ADA issue (discrimination on the basis of a disability) should be directed to Carrie Merriman in the District office at 844-5361 ext. 2602. She will then direct the caller to the appropriate compliance officer.
COMPREHENSIVE DISTRICT ATTENDANCE POLICY Achieving the vision of "healthy children…ready to learn" is widely held to be fundamental to the attainment of high academic standards, resulting in a productive, committed citizenship. How this vision may be accomplished has been the subject of debate for as long as children have been schooled outside their homes. Our focus on attendance policy and programming, coupled with school climate and increased academic performance, offers a unique oppor-tunity to engage the entire school community - parents, staff, students, and community members - in a process which will build upon the strengths of all concerned. The Education Law requires that the students enrolled in the schools of this District attend school on every school day unless legally excused. An average daily attendance rate of 100% is the goal throughout the District. The edu-cational program offered by this District is predicated upon the presence of the student and requires continuity of instruction and classroom participation. The regular contact of students with one another in the classroom and their participation in a well-planned instructional activity under the tutelage of a competent teacher are vital to this pur-pose. Absences other than legal absences as defined by State regulations have a highly adverse effect on the student as well as the entire educational program. Therefore, the Board of Education urges all parents to assure their chil-dren are in attendance. Legal absences include appointments for medical, personal, educational/college visits, legal/incarceration, and religious observation. A written excuse specifying the date(s) of and reason for the absence and signed by the parent/legal guardian, should be presented to the attendance clerk by the student on the day when re-turning to school following each absence. Student attendance will be tracked throughout the school day. Middle and High School Teachers will take period-by-period attendance. Parents/Guardians will have the ability to know where their enrolled children are throughout the school day using Parent Portal. Patterns of behavior that might be identified through the attendance process will be brought to the attention of the student’s parents/guardians and school staff. Attendance records will be maintained to maximize achievement of academic standards. Incentives will be used to encourage daily attendance. Disciplinary sanctions will be used to discourage tardiness, unexcused absences, and early departure. Parents/Guardians will be notified of all unexcused absences. Intervention strategies will be used to address attendance problems. Parents will be notified in writing when a student reaches unexcused absences in the amount of 5, 10 and 20 days. After 20 days of unexcused absenc-es, there are several county resources with which we collaborate, including but not limited to the Department of So-cial Services and Child Protective Services.
66
Objectives The objectives of the Comprehensive Attendance Policy are:
To accurately track the attendance, absence, tardiness and early departure of students to and from the schools
To ensure sufficient pupil attendance of classes so that pupils may achieve the state's mandated education stand-ards
To promote positive habits and responsibilities among students in accordance with the New York State Stand-ards
To track student location for safety reasons and to be accountable to parents regarding the location of their chil-dren during school hours
Definitions:
Whenever used within the Comprehensive Attendance Policy, the following terms shall mean: Absent: The pupil is required to be present for at least 75% of scheduled instructional period. Tardy: The pupil arrives later than the starting time of the first period class or any class thereafter. Early departure: The pupil leaves prior to the end of the scheduled instruction. Excused: Any absence, tardiness, or early departure for which the pupil has a valid school approved ex-cuse. Such excused absences shall include: personal illness, illness or death in the family, religious ob-servance, quarantine, required court appearances, attendance at health clinics or other medical visits, approved college visits, military obligations, absences approved in advance by the Principal such as music lessons or aca-demic field trips, out-of-school suspension, and other reasons as may be approved by the Commissioner of Ed-ucation. Unexcused: Any absence, tardiness, or early departure for which the pupil has no valid school approved ex-cuse. Such unexcused absences shall include: shopping trips to the mall, family vacation, oversleeping, skip-ping classes, and any absence that is not excused. The principal may declare certain absences to be excused under certain circumstances. Pupil: A child enrolled in the elementary, middle, or secondary school. Register of Attendance: Any written or electronic record maintained for the purpose of recording the attend-ance, absence, tardiness or early departure of a pupil. Teacher: A member of the teaching or supervisory staff of a public elementary, middle, or secondary school. Parent: A parent, guardian, or person in parental relationship of a student registered at the elementary, middle, or secondary school. Instructional Period: A period during the school day during which a student is scheduled to be in a class, study hall, lab, and/or support class.
Classification of Excuses The following descriptors shall be used to indicate the nature and reason for a pupil's missing all or part of sched-uled instruction: Court Appearance, Doctor Appointment, Excused Family Bereavement, Family Emergency, Ill-ness, Military Leave, Other, Religious Holiday, School Activity, Suspended, Tardy, Truant, Unexcused, Unverified, Vacation General Procedures for Taking Attendance and Excusing Absences Attendance is taken electronically by teachers in homeroom and in every class period in grades 6-12 and once daily electronically by teachers in Grades K-5. Any student arriving after the beginning of the school day will be consid-ered late and must sign in with the attendance clerk. Students who report more than five (5) minutes after the start of the school day must have a written excuse for that lateness upon arrival to school. Students who display a pattern of lateness will be assigned detention. Students returning to school following an absence must present a written ex-cuse to the attendance clerk. Absences will continue to be listed as unexcused if a written excuse is not turned in within three days unless the appropriate administrator approves the late excuse. Written Excuses for absences should include the following: - Student's full name - Date(s) of absences - Reason for absences
- Parents or Guardians full name and signature. The attendance clerk is required to keep excuses on file for one year therefore; they must be written and signed. A telephone message or email is not acceptable.
67
A student must comply with the District’s Extra-curricular attendance policy (#7410) in order to be eligible to
participate in any activity that day. An excerpt from Policy #7410, not to be limited to: “To be eligible for any extracurricular activity, a student must attend school for the whole school day in order to participate in a prac-tice, game, or event later that same day. The exception is to be legally excused for reasons other than illness. Stu-dent athletes absent from school and wishing to practice or participate in an athletic contest must report to the building principal or athletic director for permission subject to the Athletic Code of Conduct.
Parents are urged to call the school and report if their child is sick. There is a 24-hour telephone line to call when a student wakes up in the night too sick to come to school the next morning. A written excuse still needs to be provid-ed as written above. Parents should call: Middle/High :844-8694 ext. 5281
In order to encourage student attendance, the following strategies and incentives will apply:
Academic Sanctions
The Board of Education recognizes an important relationship between class attendance and student perfor-mance. Consequently, each marking period a student's final grade may be based on classroom participation as well as student's performance on homework, tests, papers, projects, etc. Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes. Consistent with the importance of classroom participation, unexcused absences will affect a student's class participation grade for the marking period. Unexcused absences also impact a student’s ability to acquire the neces-sary skills and knowledge needed for promotion.
Students who are unable to attend school or a class on a given day due to their participation in a school sponsored activity (i.e. music lessons, field trips,) must arrange with their teachers to make up any work missed. This also ap-plies to any student who is absent, tardy, or leaves early from school or class due to illness or any other excused rea-son. All students with excused absences are expected upon their return to consult with their teachers regarding missed work. Only those students with excused absences will be entitled to make up a test or other missed work and/or turn in a late assignment for inclusion in their final grade. Within ten (10) days of an absence, a student must make arrangements with the teacher to make up, at a time convenient to the teacher and the student, any work missed on the day the student was absent.
Incentives
Teachers shall work with the Building Principals, Directors, and Attendance Officer to create and implement class-room based incentive programs for excellent attendance, including, but not limited to tangible rewards or privileges to students who maintain exemplary attendance.
NOTE: An incentive cannot be in the form of grades. Teachers may not add bonus points to student grades for ex-emplary attendance.
Intervention Strategy Development
The pupil's parent shall be notified of a pupil's excessive absences according to the following:
A. If a student is absent 25% of the instructional periods within the marking period, the parents are to be contacted by school officials (administrator or designee).
B. Administrators will notify parents in writing when their child’s absentee total reaches ten (10) days.
C. When a student is absent a total of 20 days, or is not 18 years old by July 1st of the current school year, he/she may be referred to Family Court or Child Protective Services since this can be construed as educational neglect.
D. When a student is absent 20 consecutive full days, and is 16 years old prior to July 1st, he/she may be dropped from the school enrollments. If extenuating circumstances are present, it will be the administration's responsibil-ity to deal with the case on an individual basis.
Where the absence is due to a prolonged illness of three days or more, and a doctor’s note is provided, the district will arrange for home or hospital instruction as the situation warrants.
68
In some cases, the student, the parent, school counselor, administrator may develop an “Individual Health Care Plan”. This plan provides all parties information regarding the health needs of the student and how the health need(s) impair the student’s ability to perform any and all tasks. This plan also includes information regarding the student’s educa-tion requirements.
Counseling
The District shall provide counseling to students with chronic attendance problems as part of Academic Intervention Services. This will be done by the school Social Worker, School Counselors, Psychologists, or through the Depart-ment of Social Services or other agencies as contacted by administrators.
Disciplinary Procedures and Non-academic Sanctions
The pupil may be subject to disciplinary procedures set forth in the district's code of conduct for unexcused absence, tardiness, or early departure, including verbal, written warnings, and in-school suspension as well as a PINS (Pupil In Need of Supervision) referral. A student may be suspended pursuant to Education Law 3214 where it can be shown that poor attendance is willful insubordination.
In addition, the pupil may be subjected to nonacademic sanctions including but not limited to the loss of privileges such as participation in interscholastic sports and attendance at school sponsored events such as a dance or a sporting event or other extra-curricular activity.
Where the student's absenteeism is due to the parent's failure to enable his or her child's attendance and the student is of compulsory school age, school officials are required to report the matter as educational neglect to the Central Reg-istry of the State Department of Social Services.
Please note that absences due to family trips/vacations are unexcused. The principal may declare such absences and others to be excused under certain circumstances. The District yearly calendar is available by June of each year and parents should plan trips during scheduled vacation periods. Learning is an interactive experience and worksheets or reading chapters in a textbook do not take the place of classroom instruction.
Attendance Clerk
The Board of Education shall designate an Attendance Clerk for each building and provide training for that per-son. The Attendance Clerk is responsible for inputting coded student data. This data will be used in initiating appro-priate action to address unexcused pupil absence, tardiness, and early departure consistent with the Comprehensive Attendance Policy. Continuous monitoring will be conducted to identify students who are absent, tardy, or leave class or school early.
In addition, data will be reviewed and analyzed periodically by administrators who will identify patterns or trends in student absences. Parents will be given written notification of trends that impact student learning.

BEHAVIOR AND THE SCHOOL DAY
Respect
Courtesy to teachers, school employees, other students, and visitors is a tradition at our school. Each of us should strive to be considerate of all others, despite racial, religious, or economic background.
Respect and obey the judgment of your teachers. It is expected that students will treat all school personnel and prop-erty with respect at all times. Rudeness or abusive language will result in disciplinary action.
Food Deliveries
Food is not allowed to be ordered and delivered to the school during the instructional day. In an effort to maintain an educational climate and promote health and safety, we will not permit delivery personnel access to the building.
Personal Accessories in School
Please refer to Board of Education Policy 7316.
Personal accessories such as, but not limited to, personal stereos, CD players, MP3 players, IPOD’s, pagers, cell phones, E-Readers, and other similar devices are not to be used during the instructional parts of the school day.
Inappropriate use of any electronic devices will result in disciplinary action.
Picture taking with personal electronic equipment (such as cell phones) will not be allowed on school grounds at any time without the permission of a building administrator. PLEASE NOTE: This extends to school buses. NO picture taking on buses.
Students that choose to bring personal accessories onto school property will be doing so at their own risk. The school district will not be responsible or liable for replacement, repair, etc. of personal accessories in the event of damage, theft, loss, or any other type of loss of personal items. Adopted: 8/29/05; Revised: 7/9/07; 8/24/09; 9/12/11
PLEASE NOTE: Students who violate this policy may have their personal accessories confiscated and face possible disciplinary action. Refusal to turn over a personal accessory will be considered an act of Insubordination and will result in disciplinary action. Photographs/Videos
Occasionally photos/videos will be taken of students during a class or special presentation. If you do not want your photograph published for newspapers/district bulletin, etc. please send a written parental request to the Middle School Office.
Student Messages and Telephone Usage
We are respectfully requesting that you make all arrangements with your parents before coming to school for the day. Calling students to the office for messages is disruptive to classroom instruction. The office telephones are business phones only. A telephone is available in the main office and may be used by students for emergencies. Cell phones are not to be used during the instructional parts of the day.
Hall Passes
Students are not permitted in the halls during class periods unless they are accompanied by a teacher or have a hall pass from a staff member. This includes lunch and activity period. The pass is to state the destination and time the pass was written.
Bus/Late Bus Rules
Students should be on time at the designated school bus stops and should wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before attempting to enter. While on the bus, students should keep hands and heads inside the bus at all times. Re-member that loud talking and laughing divert the driver’s attention and make safe driving difficult. Horseplay is not permitted around or on the school bus.
