The Copenhagen Climate Summit 2009

What is it about?

This summit is taking place in Copenhagen

(the Capital City of Denmark) from the 7 –

18th December 2009. World leaders from

over 200 countries are meeting to agree on

a final decision of how we can save the

planet from Global Warming.

What is “Global Warming”?

Global warming is where the carbon dioxide

rising from the surface of our planet from cars,

factories and our daily lifestyles collide with the

Ozone Layer which surrounds our planet. This

weakens the ozone layer and makes it thinner.

Usually when rays from the sun travel to

Earth the Ozone Layer repels most heat that

we don’t need, but where the Ozone Layer

isn’t fully intact these super heated rays can

break through and get trapped in our

atmosphere, therefore heating the earth.

Page 5: DMS Magazine

How would this affect our lives?

This would heavily affect our lives. The

Ozone is at its weakest around the poles this

means that the polar icecaps are melting

faster than ever before and when the ice

falls into the sea the ice will melt and cause

sea levels to rise. If this carries on vast areas

of land could be consumed by water within

the next 100 years. Also the heating of the

earth could cause severe weather systems

such as Tornadoes and Hurricanes to

destroy lives more than often. Heat waves

would surge the world as well as severe

famines. These are more reasons why this

summit is taking place.

What they are planning to achieve?

There was a summit a few years ago when

only a few of the participating countries

signed a decree on what they would do.

However this time the major world leaders

are hoping to reach an agreement with

poorer countries on how they can give

money to help them combat climate change.

Hopefully they reach an agreement.

The Giant Panda... The Giant Panda lives in a few different mountain ranges. They are mostly in central China, in Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces. The Giant Panda once lived on flat and grassland but due to deforestation and farming and other restrictions mean they are only dedicated to the mountains. Habitat... Giant Panda's live in coniferous forests with a dense range of bamboo. The bamboo can be between 5,000 and 10,000 feet tall. Torrential rains or dense mist throughout the year characterizes these forests, often shrouded in heavy clouds. About Giant Panda’s... The Giant Panda is basically a black and white bear and has a body typical of bears. The Giant Panda has black fur on its ears, eye patches, muzzle legs and shoulders and the rest of the body fur is white. The phrase panda eyes come from the deep black circles around a Panda's eyes. Scientists do not know the reason of the black and white fur on the bear but they think it may be linked to their habitat so they can be camouflaged with the snow and rocks on the mountains. The Panda's thick, woolly coat helps to keep the bear warm in the forests of its habitat. Giant Panda's have strong jaw muscles to break through the tough bamboo. Most people figure by the looks of the furry and cuddly creature it’s friendly but really it can be as dangerous as any other bear. The Size of the Giant Panda... The size of the Giant Panda is about the size of an American Black Bear. The Giant Panda can be as tall as 3-4 feet on all four paws and can reach up to 4-6 feet long. Males are usually larger than the females and can weight up to 250 pounds in the wild. Most females can rarely reach up to 220 pounds. Scientists are not sure on how long the Giant Panda can live but they think the maximum is 35 years. By Bethan Coombes

Swine flu is spreading even more around the world. This flu was first a disease in pigs and spreaded quickly. If the flu got to high in a certain part of the country it would be called a pandemic. Pandemic means that the virus has got to high and more people are getting it worse. So it may even cause you to stay at home and maybe schools being closed. There was also a Spanish flu in the year 1918-1919 and it killed around 50 million people. Swine flu is like that flu but doesn’t kill as many people. This virus contains elements from the North American swine flu. There is an injection to make sure that people don’t get the swine flu but there is only 1000 of them to go around the whole world. Mainly the people who have something else wrong with them like maybe asthma. They would be the ones getting the injections because they have a likely chance of getting it worse unlike others. The certain signs of swine flu are: Colds Sore Throats Aching Tiredness Sweats Chills Dizziness and Head Aches. To prevent the spread of swine flu you can do these things: Wash your hands often Don’t touch your face too much. For more information call the helpline or look on the NHS website which is www.nhs.uk and search for swine flu. So don’t worry about swine flu there is nothing to worry about. By Jenny Peddie.

Awesome Gadgets now on the market

The IPod touch is Apple’s second best selling IPod on the market (The first one being the IPod nano Chromatic Purely because of price.) I have one myself and apart from the occasional freeze and app crash (nothing serious) the iPod touch is Apple’s most functional iPod yet, with the ability to play music, videos, games, store photos and allows you to go on msn, Facebook and MySpace. You can also create an Apple account and buy music, games, videos and music videos that you don’t have on CD, DVD’s that you don’t already own!

PRICE

8 GB = £199

16 GB = £299

32 GB = £399

The Sonic Chair is a whole new generation of chair. This is the only way I can start this article. It is one of the first spherical chairs ever released. The back of the chair is a giant padded speaker which you can plug your MP3, IPod or any other portable device into and listen to your favorite music. There is also a bracket in which you can hook a TV, laptop or even a mini fridge onto, all this whilst drowning in the most luxurious of chairs. The sonic chair comes in a range of colours;, white, black, pink, green, and orange! .Unfortunately there has been no confirmed price of the sonic chair yet. But we estimate that it will be somewhere in-between £250-£500.
