DMA National Convention……Orlando

The DMA National Convention was held at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center. As you

can see by the pictures above, it was an impressive place to have the convention. Since the entire

complex is under cover, even if it was raining, you could get from the hotel to the convention center

without getting wet.

The convention was very exciting with wonderful teachers that gave great classes for all ages,

including the Mini Dancers (as young as 3 years old). The Performing Arts Competitions proved to be

as entertaining as always and the talented competitors in the Solo Title Competitions were remarkable.

As always the Annual Banquet and Grand National PAC were the highlights of the convention. DMP

had 90 members, students, parents and guests at the banquet. Quite a showing DMP!!!!!

Mr. Dance of America… 2012

John Michael Fiumara

John Michael, student of Abby Lee Miller, brings the GOLD home for Chapter #10. John won the

Title of Mr. Dance of America 2012 on Thursday July 7, after a week of rehearsals, interview, audition

classes and an outstanding performance. John Michael also won the Tap and Jazz Audition

Scholarship Awards, the Phil Osterhouse Scholarship Award (for most talented tap dancer) and the

William Como Essay Scholarship Award (for his written essay).

“I Won’t Dance” was the music selected for John Michael’s tap performance, but everyone agrees it

should have been titled “I WILL DANCE and I DID DANCE”.

WAY TO GO………JOHN MICHAEL !!!!

Congratulations !!!!!!

Summer (student of Melody Laight and Dorothy Constable) is now

a full time paid trainee with the Kentucky Ballet Theatre. She is

the youngest company member. Her first performance will be Oct.

15 & 16 in “Witches of Doom”. Her contract with the company as

a trainee is for 21 weeks, after that she will become an apprentice

and part of the first corps.

Albert Cattafi was the choreographer for the Miss/Mr. Dance

Competition and also on the DMA faculty. Summer was Albert’s

assistant.

Summer said that she started as an acrobat, but once she saw Lee

Garrard’s granddaughter Elle dance, she decided that BALLET

was where her heart really was.

All her hard work has paid off.

Walking from the Gaylord Palm Resort to the Convention Center, you

could hear beautiful music being played.

There was a grand piano in the walkway and anyone could sit at the

piano and tickle the ivory.

John Michael could be seen there totally immersed in the moment.

According to JM’s mother, he is self taught.

Not only is he a phenomenal dancer, but he really can play a mean piano.
