EVERYONE AGREES. THE GROTESQUE INDOOR FESTIVAL 2013 WAS AGAIN A FANTASTIC PARTY EXPERIENCE! THERE’S NOT MUCH TIME TO REFLECT ON THIS EPIC 4TH BIRTHDAY BASH AS THE NEXT INSTALMENT OF GROTESQUE PARTIES IS ALREADY IN THE PIPELINE.

SATURDAY DECEMBER 21ST, PT EVENTS PROUDLY PRESENT: GROTESQUE IN CONCERT WITH MARKUS SCHULZ!

There’s no doubt that this world famous artist from the USA is gonna turn Central Studios in

Utrecht inside out and upside down!

The familiar and successful formula of Grotesque remains. However ”In Concert” will place the main empha-sis on one high-class artist. By attracting Markus Schulz, PT Events once again shows what it stands for: quality in every detail and innovation to surprise their crowd time and time again. Schulz, who consistently packs out clubs and venues in every corner of the world, will lay down a stunning three-hour set. His appearance in Utrecht could rightly be called momentous. The superstar, known especially for his distinctive sound rarely performs in The Netherlands. PT Events is clearly pulling out all the stops to offer you once again an extraordinary event!

The remaining hours will be filled by three great Dutch artists. No Grotesque party is complete without resident DJ RAM appearing behind the decks, sharing his passion for emotive and energetic Trance. Besides RAM, Sied van Riel lights up the line-up with Adam Seller completing and complementing the Grotesque ensemble! Make sure you’re there on the 21st of December to witness how PT Events will transform the big room of Central Studios in Utrecht!

EDC will return to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway for its 18th edition on June 20-22, 2014. The festival will bring Insomniac’s signature over-the-top production and creative elements to the venue including elaborately designed stage production and lighting, pyrotechnics, roaming theatrical performers, dancers and acrobats, interactive art installations and amazing music, with many new surprises for fans to discover.

For the first time, Insomniac is excited to unveil the “Headliner Loyalty Program,” which gives loyal fans the opportunity to secure tickets first. Loyal fans that successfully purchased passes to EDC, Las Vegas in 2011, 2012 and 2013 will be able to use a unique code to participate in the on sale.“It’s the fans that make our success possible and it’s for that reason that we decided to develop the “Headliner Loyalty Program” for the next EDC, Las Vegas,” said Pasquale Rotella. “It’s their energy and love that make this event possible, so I’m really excited that we’ve found a way to reward those who have been with us in Las Vegas since this adventure started in 2011. We are counting down the days until we welcome everyone back to Las Vegas next June.”

A sold out crowd of 345,000 fans came together over three days for the 2013 festival, which saw

expanded production and theatrics. The festival received acclaim through the introduction of new, meticulously designed scenic and production stages, inspired art installations including an art car parade and the innovative Night Owl Experience, the brainchild of Insomniac CEO and founder Pasquale Rotella.

EDC will once again take over Las Vegas during EDC Week, June 17 – 23, 2014, with an eclectic mix of nightclub and dayclub events spread across several Las Vegas’ venues. Insomniac’s annual dance music conference, EDMbiz, will also return for its 3rd year in addition to a brand new dance music awards show.

STEREOSONIC OFFICIALLY SOLD OUT

Electronic Family was one of the highlights this past festival season. The wellknown trance event in Holland significantly expanded and received the most visitors in its history on a beautiful sunlit day in July. Therefore the date for the next edition in 2014 is already announced now, as well as the early bird ticket sales that start on Friday 29 November.

It was only the third time Electronic Family (EF) took place, last July in the Amsterdam Forest near Amstelveen (Holland). Nevertheless it already appeared to be a major player between all the large dance festivals in The Netherlands. Thousands of party people found their way to the event, attracted by a broad line-up exploring several corners of nowadays trance music.

For EF had grown. More stages on the site, making way for more DJs to be added to the program, resulting in the festival being a gathering of the trance family more than ever. Thanks to the fanatic crowds and the more than excellent weather conditions (the sun was an important visitor this day) many special moments arose between the trees of the Amsterdam Forest.

With this in mind it’s time to look ahead to 2014. Even though winter still has to come, the festival season is right behind it, featuring EF with a groundbreaking fourth edition. The date is set: Saturday 19 July 2014.

For its fans the festival is also starting the early bird ticket sales on Friday 29 November (00.01 hours). These tickets are lower in price (€ 35,- ex fee) and with only 2.500 tickets limited available. Sales continue till Friday 6 December (23.59 hours) or when tickets sell out.

Early bird tickets can be bought at the Electronic Family website and Facebook page. The advice is to be quick, last year the first 2.000 early bird tickets were sold out within 48 hours.

Cementing Stereosonic as the premier electronic music festival in Australia, the Sydney event is now officially sold out. Indicating the need for an Australian electronic music festival to expand to a two day format, Stereosonic fans have reacted positively to the expansion through unprecedented ticket sales and support. Further indicating Stereosonic’s phenomenal success this year, Stereosonic Sydney expanded its capacity to 65,000 attendees.

INTERVIEW DJNEWSMAGAZINE

FAUL & WAD ADFaul literally means ”lazy” in German, but that’s definitely not this guy leitmotif. Quite the contrary, this Frenchmen is about go through the roof thanks to his enormous work ethic and studio mastery. But to make his musical impact felt and certainly heard, Maxime does not rely on the typical studio gimmicks, which have polluted international dance-floors.

Wad Ad is one of those fast rising French stars, which are clearly redefining their home countries typical approach to club music. Instead of using tons of filter and distortion effects, young producers such as Camille Meyer prefer warm, soulful and natural sounds.Answers, Changes featuring Faul and Astroluv are the first three tracks released by this musical protégée. All three productions have a clear identity to them, which could be labeled as the Wad Ad sound.

Today, they’re telling us a little bit more about their amazing sound…

Hey Faul & Wad Ad nice to speak to you. How are you doing? Where are you reading this interview?

Hey man, we’re doing great thanks! And you? FAUL is chilling on the couch right now and I’m on my bed man! We are at my place near Paris.

In France, people is saying you are the “stand out” confirmed young French talent! How do you react when you read this ?

We have never heard of this, it’s awesome to learn it! But to be honest nothing has really changed in our daily life, we are still buying our baguettes at the same price !

Everybody is talking about your hit called “Changes” vs Pnau. How it all began? How was it born ?

Actually it began in FAUL’s basement! We were watching some Zap de spion videos when we heard these vocals singing : “Baby I don’t know…”. We looked at each other, and thought the same : “Let’s do this !”

What does the title ”Changes” mean? Which message do you wish to move through the music video ?

We called it “Changes” because we did this track before the summer and that was an important moment for us, Wad Ad was leaving France to live 2 months in Barcelona. And for me things were already started with my first track Happy Endings and we were hoping that Changes would make some changes in our artist career.

For the music video we wanted something different with a story in it but nothing too serious. Four Music showed us a storyboard and we found the idea pretty good. We really liked the mood and the warm colors in the video. “Toilet paper is now the new confetti”.

It’s hard to convince in this industry (EDM).. Are you just like those producers saying: “You’re just doing what you love and you try to keep it going?” It’s only about ”Soul” music? What do you think of the EDM trend ?

To be honest we’re producing music to share our vibes and our musical dimension and we’re amazed that some people are feeling the same.

For us we really love the deep-house and tech-house trends, we love the fact that in these kind of music it’s a mix between electronic and acoustic sounds.

DJNEWSMAGAZINE INTERVIEW

13

FAUL & WAD ADAre you not scared about this « pressure » that many producers have more and more coming from the industry ?

We’re living the day and we work with cool people so we don’t really feel the pressure.

Do you consider “Changes” your biggest musical accomplishment when you look back in the past till now ?

We’re proud of the success of this song because at first we didn’t have any expectations with Changes.

You know, it’s one of these songs where everything was matching perfectly in a natural and simple way so we think it’s going to be tough for the next songs to find the same harmony that we had with this one.

What do you have in the pipeline for 2014? Any exclusivity we may know? Any other big collaborations like “Changes” in working ?

We’re working on our personal projects and also on a common project that will come in the beginning of 2014.

Are you a fan of social media, do you think it’s massively important now ?

We’re not huge fans of social media, we use it like everybody from our generation, it helps us a lot with the music because we are connected with every part of the world, for example we received some messages from people all over the world and it amazed us how the music can be spread nowadays.

What piece of equipment could you not live without (not necessarily DJ equipment) ?

FAUL: my bedWAD: Mario kart

Everyone’s got a hidden talent. What’s yours ?

FAUL: being late WAD: Beatboxing

What keeps you up till late ?

Music

Your favorite application this year ?

Soundcloud

We’re reaching the end of this interview; do you have a message to your fans ?

First, thank you for this interview and we would like to thank all the people who support us, who share the music, it means a lot for us, we love you!

Merry Christmas to everyone/ Joyeux Noël à tous.

And our famous last question; when you visit our brand new pages (www.djnews.be), What are your first impressions ?

THE INDUSTRY STANDARD HAS EVOLVEDaccess your music over Wi-Fi / USB from smartphone or tablet.

PROFESSIONAL MULTI PLAYER

CDJ-2000NXS

The CDJ-2000nexus is bursting with exciting new and improved features that really put the joy back into performing.

Slip Mode: a popular feature on Pioneer’s CDJ-900, Slip Mode silently continues track playback during a loop, reverse or scratch and brings the music back at the right point when the DJ exits the performance.

Improved Quantize: Quantize uses the track’s beat grid to ensure loops and cues are set and triggered in time with music, with 100 per cent accuracy. And DJs can now access Quantize via its own dedicated ON/OFF button.

Active Loop: DJs can use rekordbox to set an Active Loop at the end of tracks to ensure they’re never caught unprepared again. The CDJ-2000nexus will even display a beat countdown to that point.

Hot Cue auto load: instantly loads up to three pre-set Hot Cues when a track is loaded onto the player.

Emergency Loop: if the player becomes disconnected from the source, the CDJ-2000nexus automa-tically goes into a four-beat loop, which DJs can scratch or mix into another source.

Last track played: DJs can use the dial to easily navigate backwards through the last five tracks loaded on a player.

Rating on the go: rate and change the ratings of tracks during performance, and it will be automatically synched with rekordbox.

The Maya-prediction on the end of the world has appeared incorrect or at the very least quite inaccurate. Life goes on, nature conquers all and it’s the start of a new era. In brief: “The New Beginning”: When Nature Conquers and Overrules All. If there is something the first edition has taught us, it is that an electronic music festival is anything but out of place in Antwerp and a sequel thus seemed more than logical.  Nachtcultuur vzw therefore organises a second edition of this splendid event, on 21 December: DOOMSDAY FESTIVAL. 4 Rooms, hosted by some of the most benchmarking organisations in the electronic live and dance music-scene: Untitled!, Antwerp CityFlow, Hertz, Liberty White, Incubate (NL) & Buzz On Your Lips. Our country’s trendiest party-phenomenon Kissinger will host the vip-area.

Doomsday will again prove to be the largest, newest and freshest event of the fall. Expect an

impressing visual spectacle in the Doomsday-theme and be ready for everything that’s new and happening in electronic music, offered on a silver platter by well-established artists and up-and-coming talented youngsters. Doomsday promises a mix of at least 6 different music-styles in 4 different rooms with all of this taking place in 1 single venue.

Music is what carries this event and it is open to all ages, as long as you are a music-lover or a party-fanatic. Last year Doomsday welcomed party-animals from 14 different countries.  Following international big shots and subcultu-re-icons are headlining: Sven Väth (Ger), Len Faki (De), Agoria Presents Forms (Fr), Mount Kimbie (Uk), Pendulum (Aus), Blawan (Uk), Planetary Assault Systems (Uk), Ben Klock (De), Perc (Uk), Caspa (Uk), Matador (Ie), Friction (Uk), Extrawelt (De), Igorrr (Fr), just to name a few.

Paul Kalkbrenner Announces Debut North American Solo Tour

Paul Kalkbrenner today announced his first solo live tour of America. Synonymous with Berlin techno, Kalkbrenner is one of electronic music’s most singular artists, who despite topping charts and selling out arenas continues to play the style of techno that has defined his career over seven albums: propulsive and melodic, dark yet uplifting. After joining Sonar On Tour last year in America and playing Coachella’s Sahara Stage this year, Kalkbrenner just played a three-hour live sold-out show at NYC’s Output. The forthcoming US tour follows the release of his seventh studio album, ‘Guten Tag’, self-released on Paul Kalkbrenner Music, it was a top 5 album in Germany and a No.1 record in Switzerland. Kalkbrenner’s Guten Tag North American tour will take in six dates in at revered concert venues including NYC’s Webster Hall, Chicago’s Metro and the Henry Fonda in Los Angeles, the tour kicks off December 5 in NYC. As with all Kalbrenner shows, all tour performances will be live. A dance music crossover act, who crossed over before the term EDM was even conceived, Kalkbrenner is a Platinum selling artist, who’s track ‘Sky + Sand’ broke the German singles record, spending over 127 consecutive weeks in the Top 100. He has pushed further boundaries with his outstanding and unconventional performance as ‘Ickarus’ in the cult movie ‘Berlin Calling’, which was an unflinching look into one of the world’s most revered sub-cultures, Berlin’s techno scene. Kalkbrenner produced and recorded the movie’s soundtrack, which has sold over 250,000 album copies.

When Finnish ”Godfather of Trance” Orkidea set out to release his third artist album ”20” back in 2011, it was a celebration of two decades at the forefront of the genre he helped put on the map. Now, the producer and DJ with the birth name of Tapio Hakanen has put his prolific work into the hands of some of his home country’s finest in ”20 (Remixed),” out now on Solaris Recordings.

”It’s now two years since the release of my third artist album ”20” and I’m proud to present this remix edition,” says Orkidea. ”I’m a strong believer in the forward-thinking nature of electronic music & the art of remixing has always been in the heart and soul of DJ culture, which is why I have hand-picked twenty of my favourite (mainly Finnish) producers to create their own versions of the album tracks.”

The time, attention, heart & soul poured into creating the remixes is evident from the very first listen. Genre-wise, ”20 (Remixed)” ranges from deep & housey versions of ’Pacifique’ by Antti Rasi and Chantola, to progressive variations of ’Sundown’ from Michael Cassette and ’Hale Bopp’ by Timewave to driving uplifters ’Tw3nty’ by Beach X, ’Slowmotion II’ by Tempo Giusto and ’Unity’ by Solarstone.

Previously only available as digital extras on the original ”20” album, ’Sphere’ and ’Lifetime Warranty’ join the twenty-one track list. ’Blackbird’ by Lowland & Orkidea sees a Darude remix treatment and a sublime chill-out rendition of ’Unity’ by Finnish brothers Orion & J.Shore closes out the journey.

TO ME, THIS SELECTION REPRESENTS THE RETRO-FUTURISTIC MUSICAL LANDSCAPE THAT I WANTED ”20” TO HAVE - DEEPLY ROOTED IN THE

ORIGINAL ESSENCE OF TRANCE MUSIC, YET IN LASER-SHARP 21ST CENTURY SONIC FORM. THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THE MUSIC WE HAVE CREATED AND I HOPE YOU’LL ENJOY THE ALBUM!”

Renowned International DJ, producer and label manager, Lange, has announced details of his third studio album. After months of debuting hit single after hit single; the 2 disc, 25 track “We Are Lucky People” album will be released on November 18th 2013. Taking a completely fresh approach to releasing an album, Lange set out first releasing a string of club hits, showcasing his strength and versatility as a producer. With every track charting a Top 10 Beatport Trance position, including an incredible highest new entry at #9 with single Destination Anywhere and support across the board from the likes of Armin Van Buuren, Markus Schulz, Above & Beyond, Gareth Emery and Ferry Corsten; the album has already proven to be a massive hit before reaching release.

The album itself sees each track reworked and, combined with four new pieces, creates a unique concept long player, carefully crafted to flow continuously from start to finish. This approach has allowed him to produce his most artistic and heartfelt piece of work to date in his 15-year career at the forefront of the dance scene. Each single has been unheard until release, turning on its head the concept of an album that spawns a series of singles in its wake.

As with his previous studio albums, Lange has again collaborated with some phenomenal talents in Betsie Larkin for Insatiable, a brand new exclusive for the album following on from their previous work on Obvious and All Around Me; Susana for Risk Worth Taking, a massive release from May which won Global Selection Winner on Markus Schulz’s GDJB and now sees a stunning acoustic take for the album; Cate Kanell for

Fireflies, an ethereal vocal currently taking the trance scene by storm and sitting high in the Beatport charts; Stine Grove for Crossroads, another massive release which now is given a downtempo tribal take; Hysteria! for Unfamiliar Truth which was first debuted on Lange’s Ministry of Sound Trance Nation compilation earlier this year; Shannon Hurley on Superstars, another album exclusive with a commercial edge; and finally Ilseviolin, a Fender violinist who has appeared with Paul Van Dyk, Above & Beyond, Carl Cox, Snoop Dogg and Kanye West to date, for Violin’s Revenge.

FERRY CORSTEN - ONCE UPON A NIGHT VOL. 4

Maven electronic music master Ferry Corsten opens the book for a fourth spellbinding volume in his fabled ’Once Upon A Night’ series. Over two exactingly structured, seamlessly crafted mix chapters, he chronicles his and Flashover Recordings’ latest clubland adventures. In addition to his own musical stock, the fourth edition features a wealth of new material from some of Holland’s most established label houses - Black Hole Recordings, Spinnin’ Records and Armada Music among them.

With this new edition Ferry has shifted the style sights - audibly travelling far beyond the exclusive province of trance. Expanding the ’Night’s remit, he’s opened it up to embrace a wide span of electronic music, from which he draws on audio from both its best-known proponents and brightest young talent.

’Once Upon A Night’s pages have been reopened and Ferry’s again ready to let the music tell the story.

Tonally the fourth O.U.A.N. odyssey departs on calm waters with a brace of tranquillity from London-based producer Ad Brown. With the vocalized shine of ’More’ and ’Thrive’ prefacing the mix, through fresh studio names Ferry crafts new threads into ’Night’s narrative.

Drawing on audio from far and wide, Analogue Sound Department’s Daft Punk-ish ’Rhodestep’, Timur Shafiev’s electronica-edged ’Mainstream’ and the progressive harmonics of Amir Afargan’s ’Dawn of Paradise’ light the mix’s path. Ducking its head into the big rooms for a moment, the midpoint finds Ferry debuting a track under a new pen name. Composed alongside fellow Hollander Joeri Lodders, the chip-tone channellings of LoCo’s ’Out In The Field’ again subtly tweak O.U.A.N.’s character. Further in, ’Is This Love’ from Zachary Zamarripa and Disco Freaks vs. Dayton Elliss ’Take Me 2 The Sun’ inflect a grooving up-swell of house, before ’Once Upon’ veteran REZarin signs the chapter off with ’Signature’s flourish of pulse-racing anthemcs.

On bringing the fourth phase of O.U.A.N. to fans, Ferry said: ”With the diversity of dance music in general being bigger than ever before, my playground is endless. And with the sound of this compilation I hope you can hear that nothing is impossible.”

With skilled assurance Corsten proceeds to drive the mix onto trancier ground. Alongside his and Giuseppe Ottaviani’s floor-packing ’Magenta’ come the renegade, pitch-bent synths of Markus Schulz’s current club-rocket ’Remember This’ and David Forbes’ fiery ’Exist’. Providing ’Once Upon A Night 4’s climactic twist-in-the-tale, Andy Duguid’s shimmering ’Tiago’, Witness45’s synth-suffused ’Thank You’ and the heady captivation of Venaccio’s ’Foxy’ deliver its melodic-through-eup-horic bookend.

Joined by the in-demand US trio, who themselves have just dropped their widely praised debut album ‘Get Wet’, Headhunterz continues to push the boundaries of the hardstyle sound that he has pioneered as he brings fresh fusions to the table on ‘United Kids Of The World’. Opening softly with a delicate piano melody and warm vocals, the driving drum line emerges through Krewella’s empowering and rousing chants before dropping into a powerful hardstyle rhythm and distorted synth lines, which intertwine with more expansive atmospheric details to create a certified future anthem.
