Winter 2013
How wonderful to look back on the best summer for the last six years or so, and I hope that everyone was able to enjoy some of the good weather. When it finally started it was quite remarkable, and even now in early December it has yet to get really cold. When the warmth came the plants started to grow like mad, and I am sure that for those who love gardening there has been more work than normal this summer. Now we have experienced some strong autumnal wind and there will be a lot of clearing up to be done; I hope your backs have stood up to the challenge! Talking of challenges, as I mentioned in the last News-letter, my son Joshua gradu-ated this summer and has joined us in the practice. Both he and Elizabeth held the fort while I was away for a couple of weeks in August, with great success. We are, all three of us, now working in all three of the practices, and they have both taken to the new schedules like ducks to water and it is really great to have two such enthusiastic and committed Chi-ropractors on the team. Each of the practices has a slightly different feel, so that variety is interesting for us all. It also means that there is really comprehensive cover in all the practices when one of us is on holiday, or away for any other reason. Thankfully I am away much less now as my role as President of The Royal College of Chiropractors has none of the political pres-sures that I had as Chairman of the General Chiroprac-tic Council. After doing that for 10 years I genuinely feel very much more relaxed now and it will mean much less disruption to the appointments than was the norm in the past; so better for all of us. Our exercise classes are proving very popular and it may sound a little like a scratched record but stiffness is one of our biggest enemies and, as the temperatures drop the nights draw in and the weather deteriorates, it is really important to keep active. There is no substitute
for regular exercise and it is sometimes difficult to moti-vate yourself. We now have a variety of options to suit all ages and abilities, so I really encourage you to think about it. We have a few new additions to the team: Claire Dannatt specialises in Sports Massage and Myo-fascial Release and was also part of the medical team at the 2012 London Olympics. Alison Pryke is also a Sports Massage Therapist. Wendy Dewar is running classes adding to the Pilates team. Jacqui Jarosy is doing Yoga and Rachael Greig is doing children’s dance classes on Saturday mornings. Fred Oviatt has
taken over Deborah Bray’s chi-ropody practice in Devizes while she recuperates from shoulder surgery, and last but not least Kerry Sturrock has started doing Hypnotherapy in the Bradford on Avon clinic. If you are inter-ested in finding out more about any of these services then please ring Jane in Bradford on Avon on 01225 862140
Since Elizabeth and Joshua have been with us they have been keen to push our ‘online presence’. We are now on Facebook and Twitter so like us or follow us to hear about our latest news. We’ll be posting some great exercise and health advice, funny relevant blogs and pictures and from here we can keep you up to date with any new classes or activities going on in the clinics. We are also on Google+ for the more technologically savvy of you and we have started to write a Blog—here we talk in a little more detail about common musculoskele-tal complaints, and give more detailed advice on the causes and best way to manage these. So as the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness be-gins, please look after yourselves and remember to keep moving. Peter Dixon Clinic Director

Meet the team...
Foot Health has come a long way from
simply " cutting nails". It covers a myriad of lower limb conditions including corns, in- growing nails, infections, verrucae and many other foot prob-lems. As life expectancy increases, many more elderly people find themselves needing help with
their foot care, although this is not just the realm of the elderly, the explosion of road running has led to a huge increase in the develop-ment and demand for orthotics and many Foot Health Practitioners have studied Biomechanics enabling them to supply them to their patients. Foot Health Practitioners wishing to expand their expertise can take Diplomas in Cryotherapy for the freezing of verrucae. Painful feet can lead to a reluctance to mobi-lise in the elderly, which can cause added medical problems and isolation if they feel that they cannot venture out. As a Foot Health Practitioner I am on a voluntary register that has been accredited by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care. The AVR scheme was set up by the Government to improve standards and safety for the benefit of the public. Ac-creditation demonstrates my commitment to high professional stan-dards, to enhancing safety and delivering a better service. To book an appointment with Fred contact Jane in Bradford on Avon on 01225 862140 or Valerie in Devizes on 01380 729103.
