God could not be everywhere and therefore he made mothers. ~Jewish Proverb

Mother's Day is a modern celebration honoring

one's mother, as well as motherhood, maternal

bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is

celebrated on various days in many parts of the world,

most commonly in the months of March or May.

Many Canadians celebrate Mother’s Day by showing

their appreciation for mothers or mother figures. The

Mother’s Day date in Canada is on the second Sunday

of May each year. Early celebrations of Mother’s Day

originated from Canada’s neighboring country, the

United States. Carnations are a popular Mother's Day

symbol in both Canada and the United States.

Happy Mother’s Day

It is time to remember the “Mother of the Khlasa”, Mata Sahib Kaur Ji. She earned the distinction by instilling the first Amrit with the sweetness that balances its fierceness. Mata Sahib Kaur Ji, the spiritu-al wife of Guru Gobind Singh ji, accompanied Guru Sahib throughout his life, even dur-ing battles, serving him in eve-ry possible way.

Wash Your Hands- Germs are everywhere! Good hand washing is the

best prevention against picking up unwanted viruses.

Get enough sleep- We are all-sleep deprived in this country. Sleep

allows the immune system time to regenerate it’s resilient powers to

protect us. Make this a priority during flu season.

Avoid drafts- Dress your child properly for abrupt changes in temper-

ature especially when going outside. This can shock the immune sys-

tem and make it work let effectively.

EXTRA fluids- This is perhaps the most important first step in protecting

your child. The immune system doesn’t work efficiently when it’s

dry. Make sure your kids drinks sufficient amount of water.

Student Absences

If your child is sick or

will be away from school for

any reason, please call the

school office and let the secre-

tary know. The school phone

number is 403-293-

7712.

Important information for parents

Agendas

We want to remind all parents

to PLEASE CHECK YOUR

CHILD’S AGENDA EVERY

involvement in this way.

Healthy Eating

It is very important to pack your

child a healthy lunch with 2

healthy snacks. Food such as pop,

fruit by the foot, chips, candy,

chocolate, wagon wheels, and

dunkaroos are not allowed to be

eaten at school. These items will

be sent back home! Thank you

for your cooperation.

Bana Day

On Fridays, students are permitted to wear Bana in-

stead of their school uniform. This is optional; how-

ever, if students choose not to wear Bana, they must

wear their uniform. Fridays are not casual dress

days!! Only the last Friday of the month is a Caus-

al Day.

We have a busy last few months left in our grade 1 year. In Language arts, students will continue retelling stories from beginning to end. Nursery Rhymes have been introduced which will allow students to remem-ber and retell them in sequencing order. We have been doing more detailed writing by adding nouns and verbs to our stories. Please encourage your child to write at home as often as possible. They can write about a fun experience they had, create a fictional story, write a procedure for food they helped prepare, etc. Encourage them to read their writing aloud to the whole family. All grade 1 students are encouraged to continue practicing their sight words and read daily at home.

In Math, students will continue focusing on developing their addition and subtraction skills. Also, we have been learning 2-D shapes and 3-D objects. Since spring has arrived, in Science students have started the plants and animals unit. We will be learning about different life cycles of animals and their habitats. As well, students will learn parts of a plant and will be planting their own plants. In Social studies, we are learning about traditions and community. We are very proud of all the students for working so hard to fin-ish off the school year!

It sounds like everyone had such a lovely Vaisakhi break. It is hard to

believe that we have about ten weeks of school left. We will certainly be

busy. We are looking forward to exploring the amazing world of dino-

saurs that once lived on the land. Kindergarten students will make their own volcanic rock and conduct a

science experiment on Volcanic Eruption. In math, we will learn about the 3-D shapes. The concept of

Measurement such as length, capacity and mass will also be introduced.

Our focus will be spring, insects and plants as a part of our literacy and science curriculum in the upcom-

ing month. Kindergarten students will also partake in various hands on activities and learn about different

farm animals during their visit to the farm in the month of May.

We are going to concentrate on learning the last habit; Habit-7: Sharpen the Saw (habit of self renewal) in

the month of May. Students will share different ideas on how they can sharpen their saw in daily life by

staying active- physically, mentally, emotionally and socially.

Kind regards,

Mrs. Parhar and Mrs. Zaseybida

For Literacy, we will be focusing on procedural texts and autobiographies. Procedural texts tell the reader how to do

something, for example, how to make cookies, feed a pet, or play a game. In our autobiographies unit, students will

learn the steps in order to complete an autobiography. Students will get the opportunity to research and complete an

autobiography on an author who writes children’s books.

For math, we will be working on our sixth and seventh unit. We will be focusing on numbers to 100 and looking 3-D

objects. Numbers to 100- our main focus will be to develop a number sense and to use patterns to describe the world

and solve problems. In our 3-D objects unit, we will be focusing on describing the characteristics of 3-D objects and 2

-D shapes, and analyzing the relationships among them.

For science, we will be focusing on our Boats and Buoyancy and Magnetism unit. In the Boats and Buoyancy unit, we

will be looking at material, design, and components that are appropriate for designing a boat. In our Magnetism unit,

students will be able to identify where magnets are used and why they are used. Also to distinguish materials that are

attracted by magnet from those that are not.

For social studies, we have continued learning about Meteghan, Saskatoon, and Iqaluit. We will be focusing on our

third unit which “Looking at Work”. Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of how geography,

culture, language, heritage, economics, and resources shape and change Canada’s communities.

Spring is here and we are working towards the final months of school this year. Time

sure flies when you’re having fun!

In Science students have completed their animal and playground structures and are now moving onto our final

unit “animal lifecycles”. Student will be exploring the different characteristics of animals as well as their lifecy-

cles. We hope to find some real life examples to explore throughout the unit.

Now that we have arrived safely back from Tunisia, we are currently boarding the plane to our final destination

India. Students have been looking forward to this trip as many have lots to share about their own experiences in

India. Look forward to an open project on a topic about India and make sure to send in some pictures for the bul-

letin boards.

Students have completed the “Measurement” unit and will be focusing on Fractions and Geometry. Students will

learn how to explain fractions as part of a whole, describe situations in which fractions are used, and compare dif-

ferent fractions. They will also explore how to identify 3D and 2D shape characteristics including: faces, edges,

and vertices.

In Literacy we have begun our second novel study. The students are working great in their groups and really

thinking about the details that go into writing. We finished up our debates and oh boy did they get intense! The

students made wonderful arguments and it was very interesting to watch. Now we are working on our stuck story

unit making sure to use the 5 senses to show not tell. Keep an eye out for those new spelling words and make sure

you are practicing and reading every night.
