RULES Take out the 12–12 domino card and place it face up to start the game. Shuffle the remaining cards and deal 6 to each player. Keep your cards hidden from your opponent. Take turns to lay down one card at a time, placing it end-to-end against either end of the domino layout. Cards must be placed so that the touching numbers on adjacent cards show one number that is divisible by the other: the bold number (a multiple) on one domino card must be divisible by the outline number (a factor) on the card next to it. Optional: After playing a card, spin the spinner and use the term (‘divisible’, ‘factor’ or ‘multiple’) in a sentence that describes the relationship between the new pair of numbers. If you cannot play a domino card from your hand on your turn, take one from the pack and play it immediately if possible. If not, add it to your hand and pick up a second card. If you still cannot play, that is the end of your turn. It can also provide practice in using the terms ‘divisible’, ‘factor’ or ‘multiple’ appropriately. N.B. Divisibility rules must be taught first. (E.g. we know that a number is divisible by 3 if its digit-sum is in the 3x table, etc.) The game should NOT be used to get children to recite all the memorised facts of various times tables. EQUIPMENT NEEDED TO PLAY THE GAME The domino cards (see below), printed out and cut out. Optional: A spinner with a base showing these words: ‘divisible’, ‘factor’, and ‘multiple’. Sam plays the 20–6 card and says, “20 is a multiple of 5”.
