I know Spring is here when the Governor's Cabinet starts wearing their white pants and skirts. I am not sure how or where the White's came from, but I get so many comments that I am going to give them to Region Chair Lion Gene Hilton so he can make some new jokes for next year. We had a terrific night for President's Honor Night, great food, great fellowship and a fantastic speaker. PID Lion Dr. Gary Anderson gave us a speech that Lions will be talking about till the next President's Honor night. Besides being a eye doctor, Dr. Anderson is a great Lion who be- lieves in everything Lions. In fact he was really amazed at the number of Leo's that we had at the dinner. His amaze- ment continued Saturday with the six Leo's who attended the Convention. It's a shame that more Leo's didn't attend, but hopefully the Clubs will see that we need to get the Leo's more involved with what the sponsoring club does and having them join other clubs in their events. We have seven great Leo Clubs and hopefully this number will grow as well. We had a great turn out at the District Convention. Many attended the seminars and stayed the whole day to try to win the eight $25.00 prizes that we had. I pulled the first one and Lion President Richard from the Annville-Cleona Club won. I think this was a great thing to have as more Lions stayed for the whole day and from the comments, they enjoyed this great Lion event. This is my second to last newsletter that I will have a message in. I have enjoyed my year as District Governor and as in any position, you make friends and you up- set others. I made some tough decisions this year and it has not been an easy thing for me to do so. One thing I want to share is one thing that happens to a New District Governor when they take office. They get many calls from PAST DISTRICT GOVER- NORS on things that they feel will happen during YOUR year. Now I have had conversations about this with people in Lions like International President Lion Bar- ry Palmer, many Past International Directors and some Past District Governors, that many PDG'S just can't let go of what power they think they still have in the Dis- trict. I know all of them mean well, but really, this is the New DG's Year, let them make their path into Lionism and let them show what they have been taught by Li- ons International on how to handle their position. I appreciate those that gave me hints of things to keep in mind, but I think we all have to remember that when you’re in this position you’re working for the betterment of the DISTRICT and not yourself. I listened and then made a decision that was best for the District not the PDG or myself. Lions is a great organization and we are a dying group. We need to start ask- ing people to join and build our District back up to the numbers we had ten and twenty years ago. Thoughts from the 1st Vice District Governor Lions, Lionesses, and Leo's, April certainly was a busy and fun filled time for our District. President's Honor Night was outstanding with over 400 Lions, Lionesses, and Leo's in attendance. It was great to hear everyone cheer their President on. The following day the District was also well attended. I want to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone that voted for me. Your support was humbling and very much appreci-ated. Now that we are all energized we can roll into May with big plans and the ability to carry them out. Wouldn't May be a great month to bring in a new member for your club. Let's give it a try. Yours in Lionism, Lion Deb Burkholder 1st VDG District 14-D

Will Your Club Have One More Member Than Last Year?

This is the last quarter of the fiscal year. LCI would love to see each of our 46,000 clubs worldwide finish this year with at least one new member than they had started with. New members not only create additional hands for the service your club provides, but also brings enthusiasm and new ideas to clubs. Have you invited a new member yet? Check out the Just Ask, New Member Recruiting Guide for ideas on who to invite and how.

THOUGHTS FROM 2nd VICE DISTRICT GOVERNOR

It really was a wonderful President Honor's Night with over 400 Lions, Lioness, Leos & guests, including DG Jack's Mom. I loved that! If you missed PID Dr. Gary Anderson's talk, you missed an opportunity to hear an upbeat Lion who filled the room with his energy & ability to get the Lion message out. The good times continued at the District 14D Convention with various well attended seminars. Granted, an incentive of winning $25. could have played into that. The "Basket Project" was fantastic with 40 entrees. Thanks to all Clubs for their con-tributions & a special "good job" goes out to Lion Jamie Car-penter. Voting took place which moved 1st VDG Deb into the Dis-

trict Governor Elect position; I am now in the 1st VDG Elect slot & Lion Bob Weaver, 2nd Vice District Governor. For me, this year has flown by & I have a feeling the 2014-15 year will do the same. I was in charge of 2 seminars at the Convention, "The Art of Recognition" & "Women in Li-ons". I was pleased to have a good turnout for both. I had "people"! Recognition of the good jobs that Lions do, whether by presenting plaques, pins, certificates or a pat on the back, (which sometimes means more), goes a long way to lift the morale of the recipient, the Club, ensures good results for successful service & most important, recognition adds to the retention of members. As far as "Women in Lions"....what can I say except, "Yes & we want more"! When I look out over a Lions Club I don't see men & women, I see LIONS, hands to serve. If you look through the District Directory you will take note of the many women in District positions, club officer positions, all serving, bringing a different slant to all that we do. You have now attend-ed my seminars & no you are not getting $25. Your reward is having a mindset to recgonize the efforts of others: Lions, family, co-workers, church members, it all works for good feelings & better service. Now go forth & seek out new members, women & men. JUST ASK! 1st VDGE Kathy P.S. A recent question on "Jeopardy"......I am an organization whose motto is "WE SERVE" & I have a feline quality. Not one of the 3 contestants knew the answer. I hope you do!

Nomination and Selection of District Melvin Jones Fellowship

PURPOSE:

To provide guidelines on the nomination and selection process of District 14-D for a Melvin Jones Fellowship to be presented to a Lion from each Region and a Lioness.

GENERAL:

1. Each Lionistic year, District 14-D may present a Melvin Jones Fellowship to a Lion per Re-gion along with a Lioness based on nominations from the Lions/Lioness clubs.

2. Nominations pertain to New Melvin Jones Fellowships only and not Progressive Fellowships.

3. The LCIF Chairperson must submit in the District Newsletter information and instructions, along with a deadline, on how to nominate a Lion/Lioness. This must be submitted at least two months before the deadline.

4. Only Clubs that contributed to the District as per the Contribution Schedule for LCIF, which is set each year by the District Governor, may submit a nominee for a District Melvin Jones Fellowship.

For example: If the per member contribution is $5.00 and your club has 20 members you would need to contribute $5.00 X 20 members or $100.00 to be able to submit a nominee.

5. All nominations must be board approved and signed by either the Club President or Secretary, preferably by the President where possible.

6. All nominations MUST be submitted on club stationery providing the qualifications of the nominee and sent to the LCIF Chairperson and a copy to the District Secretary by the established dead-line.

7. Within a month after the deadline, the LCIF Chairperson must call a meeting and based on the received nominations select the Lion/Lioness from each region and Lioness clubs that will received a Melvin Jones Fellowship from District 14-D.

The final decision, will be made by a Committee consisting of the District Governor, the last Past District Governor from each Region, Cabinet Secretary, and Cabinet Treasurer.

Note: The process will be: The above Lions will assess those nominated in each Region, assign-ing 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. positions to each nominee, the #1 position will receive the Melvin Jones Award. If there are extra dollars available for awards, the #2 positions will be considered for the remaining awards, etc.

*The 1st Vice District Governor, 2nd Vice District Governor, LCIF Chairperson, Lioness Coor-dinator, and the Region Chairpersons will also be present to give input on any nominees that they know. They do NOT have voting rights.

*The District Governor at the time of the selection process will present the Melvin Jones Fellow-ships at a later date, preferably at the following year’s Region Rallies when he/she is the Immediate Past District Governor.

Deadline to submit a Melvin Jones candidate is June 1, 2014

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! The District 14-D Theme Basket Committee thanks all Lions, Lioness, and Leo clubs that donated a theme basket and made this fundraiser for the District Convention a success! We had 40 baskets and raised $1,255.00, which helps District 14-D offset the cost of holding the convention. When we asked the Lions, Lionesses, and Leos of District 14-D to show their support to the District, we knew that you would not let us down, and you came through again by providing so many great theme baskets. Again, thank you for that support. Also, thank you to all who helped transport baskets, sell tickets, arrange the baskets, and pick the winning tickets. A special thank you to those people who offered to deliver bas-kets to winners who were not present when the baskets were awarded.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!

DEAR “FAB 4”,

I was proud that all of the Lioness Clubs of District 14D were repre-sented at President’s Honor Night! It was a great night; good food, as always, & Past International Director Dr. Gary Anderson brought a great message to the District. I congratulate all Lioness Presidents for their

year of serving.

The District Convention was a success & Heidelberg Twp. Lioness President Betty DeLong attended my seminars, thanks for the support. The “baskets” this year were as fabulous as the “Fab 4”! I was lucky to win one that was made by the Intercourse Lions Club which had a bottle of my favorite wine in it. Also a winner was Lioness Gloria B. a member of the Blue Ball Lioness Club. Her’s was made by the Akron Li-

ons Club & it was huge! I’m talking, really BIG!

The beginning of May I will be visiting the Millersville Lioness Club & the Blue Ball Lion-esses, where I will be inducting a new member! I must congratulate the Heidelberg Twp. Lion-

ess Club for acquiring new members. (Notice the plural.) What a way to end a Lioness year.

As you continue to serve take time to smell the roses. After the winter we have had the com-ing of spring is all that much sweeter. Take in deep breaths of that air, of course if you are in the country, as I am, there is a lot added to the air. Somehow it just adds to the richness that is

around us.

Lioness Coordinator, Kathy

The Heidelberg TWP Lions Club and the Greater Lebanon Valley Lions Club will join to-

gether to hold a free Eye Screening in Schaefferstown on May 31st 2014. It will be held in

the EMT Building behind the Fire Co. on Locust Street. Time 9:00 AM. Till 1:00 Pm. All

are welcome!

Lions Fight Measles in Botswana

During November 2013, Lions in Botswana assisted the country's Ministry of Health with a five-day measles vaccination campaign. LCIF helped fund the Lions' measles activities, which included social mo-bilization – getting the word out about the campaign to residents, handing out flyers and answering ques-tions. Close to 200,000 children received vaccinations through this campaign. "The Lions really came in at the right time...I think that the way the Lions helped us, we reached even more people, which means even more children vaccinated," said Josephine Mosimanewakgosi, head of the Kanye district health team.

Keeping your current members in your Club is just as important as recruiting new members.

Is your Club aware of and doing something about at-risk members. At-risk members are those

members who you haven’t seen for awhile, do not participate in Club service projects, do not

participate in Club fundraisers or do not communicate with the Club. There is a problem

……. is your Club doing anything about these members?

HERE ARE A COUPLE OF TOOLS / TIPS

YOU MAY WANT TO CONSIDER USING RIGHT NOW!

1. Do you have a membership committee that is communicating with at-risk members?

If not, why not?

2. Are your Club projects - both service and fundraising - good projects and is your Club receptive to new ideas for projects?

3. Do all of your members feel ownership for the Club; members need to feel that they are an important part of the Club.

4. Does your Club include new and long-time members on committees? Is your Club keeping everyone busy; is your Club asking what members are interested in and not just assigning them to a committee? Are long-time members allowing newer members to take a leadership role on projects and willing to listen to new ideas?

5. Is your Club explaining everything at meetings? Are all members at meetings leaving the meeting knowing what is happening and how things are happening and their role?

6. Does your Club have good meetings? Are programs interesting? Is your Club meeting place attractive? Is your tail-twister effective and active? Are you meals good and af-fordable? Does your Club conduct a 50/50 drawing?

7. Does your Club conduct an orientation program that benefits new and long-time mem-bers alike? Suggestion; conduct one orientation program each year.

8. Does your Club try to avoid cliques? Does your Club try different seating arrange-ments or different shaped tables. Does your Club tail-twister play a role in helping to avoid cliques that become divisive?

The Global Membership Team and the Global Leadership Team will be conducting a workshop at the June 1st Cabinet Meeting focusing on retention strategies. Plan to at-tend and help your Club avoid the June drop in membership.

SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT RETENTION

WHAT IS YOUR CLUB DOING ABOUT AT-RISK MEMBERS?

The Intercourse Lions Club is holding it’s semi-annual flea market & sausage sandwich lunch stand on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at the CB Hoober parking lot in Intercourse. Time is 9 am to 2 pm or until sold out. Homemade ice cream is made on the premises with a putt-putt engine starting around 11 am. Various vendors with a variety of items to sell. Come to shop & enjoy delicious sausage sandwiches & homemade ice cream.

Notes and Hints from your Global Leadership Team

Make Plans To Be Successful 2014-2015 Club Officers Elects should be in the progress of planning so their year is a successful one. You are now part of a team that should be making every effort to ensure that your club will have a good and successful year. Each officer should anticipate making your club the best service organiza-tion in town. Here are some ways to make sure that this becomes a reality. First, make sure Lion/Lioness President that you have all required Committee Chairpersons ap-pointed, and, each Lion/Lioness knows the requirements of the position. Next, plan your Clubs service projects, Fundraising projects and any community and family activities at least three months in advance and appoint who will chair each event to make it successful. Make sure all of your Club Members are informed about all events well in advance. (Not all attend social meetings and also need to be informed). Also, find ways to get involved in your community. Participate in a highway cleanup, support Boy and Girl Scouts, Little League, find a way to work with other organizations supporting your com-munity, or any of a large number of other ways to get your club involved in your community. Invite community leaders to speak at your Club meetings. In addition, make plans for your Club Officers to attend the Club Officers Training at Emanuel United Methodist Church in Brownstown, Pa. at 2:00 PM on June 29, 2014. Get up to date with the latest changes and share thought and idea’s from other Club Officers. Finally, recognize all officers and members for the work that they do for your Club. Set a standard for future officers to follow; be mentors to your Club membership. This year can be a rewarding time for each new Club officer. Everyone can make a difference in the future of not only our clubs, district and Lions Clubs International. Let us encourage you to aspire to be the best of the best. Make good decisions, remembering that you represent the members of your club, not just yourself.

Plan your year, set your goals and reach for success.

Leadership seminars/workshops coming up include:

May 15th to 18th is the PA Lions State Convention is Pittsburgh. There are excellent seminars/workshop and speakers Friday and Saturday. Attending the State Convention for the first time gives the newer members the feeling that many can do so much that a few can’t do. June 1st is our Cabinet Meeting at Mountville Park. There will be a seminar/workshop at 12:30 PM. These seminars have been well attended, so come out for lunch at noon and be part of the workshop. Reservation form for lunch is included in this newsletter. June 29th is the Club Officers Training at UMC Church is Brownstown, Pa. at 2:00. Reservation form included in this newsletter. On behalf of your Global Leadership Team, we thank you for all that you are doing so that we are successful in serving those less fortunate than ourselves. For more information or a club program from one of our Team Members contact either 1st VDGE Kathy Ridder at 717-661-7760 or myself.

REMINDER TO CLUB SECRETARIES Each May, Club Secretaries are expected to file the PU-101 (Publication 101) with Lions Clubs International and with the PA Lions State Office. When Club Officers are known for the 2014-2015 Lions year, the report should be filed but no later than May 15th. The report for LCI should be filed online through MyLCI. All Club secretaries received a re-porting form from the State Office when they received the State Convention voting cre-dentials. That form should be completed and returned to the State Office prior to May 15th.

These reports are important to LCI , PA State Lions and to our District and for a number of reasons. The most important reason being communications that come to local Clubs concerning a host of topics and that the appropriate Club Officer receives the information.

Having these reports filed each year is especially important to the District since most communications going to Clubs comes to the Club through the District Governor and Dis-trict Cabinet members. All Club Secretaries are encouraged to be timely in filing the

PU-101 and if assistance is needed, contact the District Cabinet Secretary.

LEO CLUB NEWS FROM AROUND THE DISTRICT

The Lititz LEO Club has had a busy month with participating in the District-wide Presidents Honor Night, Convention, Easter Egg Hunt and Bowling Tournament/New Member Recruiting Night. We are proud to announce that our President, Samson Cassel-Nucci won the prestigious International Director Service Award. Samson's commitment to the Leo's has been top-notch and his ser-vice to the club and its mission has set the example for all to fol-low. The LEO's also participat-ed in this year's District Con-vention as it was the first time

the LEO's were a part of this great experience. The Lititz Club, Ephrata Mid-dle School and Cocalico LEO's participated in exercises to promote awareness in eye dis-eases by using specially made glasses, learn about VisionCorps, and had some round table dis-cussions on what each of our Club's do and how we are success-ful.

The Lititz LEO Club participated in the Lititz Lions Easter Egg Hunt and provided assistance as well as providing the Easter Bunny (who was really popular with long lines waiting to get their picture taken!). We are ending our month with Glow Bowling at Cain's Lanes and are looking forward to seeing lots of new faces as this is our spring recruiting event. We hope you will enjoy these fun pictures highlighting our month.

Dear Lions, Ever since Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) established the One Shot, One Life: Lions Mea-sles Initiative, I often reflect on how thankful I am that my children and grandchildren can receive immuniza-tions for life-threatening diseases like measles. But not all kids are so lucky. Did you know that more than 300 people die every day from measles, mostly children, and even more are impacted by resulting health compli-cations such as blindness? Measles is a highly conta-gious disease that can be prevented by a simple vac-cination that costs less than a dollar. Thanks to you, more children are getting vaccinations and more lives are being saved. Today marks the first day of this year's World Immunization Week. This annual event presents an opportunity to raise awareness of measles and the importance of vaccinations. Lions around the world are hosting events throughout this special week to show their commitment to the One Shot, One Life: Lions Measles Initiative. As you read the LCIF blog this week, you will find inspiring stories from Lions about their work during World Immunization Week. Keep in mind that no matter where you are in the world, you can make a difference by supporting LCIF. Lions are providing education in more than 200 countries, actively supporting vaccination campaigns in countries impacted by mea-sles, and fundraising to make sure that more children have access to immunizations and a bet-ter life. We are almost at the end of our 30-day challenge to raise US$1 million for measles and it is exciting to see our progress towards this goal. Have you made your contribution yet? Remem-ber, your donation will be matched on a 1:1 basis throughout April by the family of Abhey and Aruna Oswal, for a total of up to US$500,000. I am confident that we can reach this goal to-

gether to help protect our children against measles. Thank you for your support!

Sincerely, Wayne Madden Chairperson, Lions Clubs International Foundation
