Va- lerie en haar kêrel was alleen tuis. My klein- kind se ouma moes my by my vriendin se huis kom oplaai en huis toe neem.” Volgens ds. Jetro Cloete was Va- lerie ’n “stille krag”.

    land situated behind ACJ Pha-

    kade Primary over the weekend

and set alight the security cara-

    van on the site.

    According to Lwandle police

    station commander, Lieutenant-

    Colonel Siviwe Somtsewu, a

    group of Lwandle residents went

to the offices of the security com-

    pany guarding the Sanral owned

    land inLwandle, demanding to

be included in the teamof securi-

ty guards that protect the Sanral

    land.

He says a public meeting was

    held on Saturday where people

    wereapparentlyencouragedto

    occupy Sanral land and chal-

lenge the hiring criteria for secu-

    rity guards for Sanral owned

    land.

A mob of about 300 people ap-

    proached the caravan on Sunday

    and according to Somtsewu,

    chased the security guards away

and torched the caravan. A case

    of arson is being investigated,

but no arrests have been made.

    Sithembiso Weduwedu, chair-

    person of the Helderberg branch

    of Seskhona Peoples Right

    Movement, says the land inva-

    sion could have been prevented

if the security company had met

    with the community.

    Hesays thecommunity leaders

    want to workwith the security

    companywhen they are identify-

    ing possible candidates for em-

    ployment in Lwandle. He ex-

plains that people who only use

    the salary for themselves should

    not be employed because the

    community is desperately poor,

people need to take care of each

    other.

    Weduwedu says the land inva-

sion was initially about job op-

    portunities at the security com-

pany, but now that people are oc-

cupying the land, the there is no

    going back.

He says Seskhona was not in-

    volved in the torchingof thecara-

    van.

    Vusi Mona, general manager

    for communications of Sanral,

says Sanral respects the rule of

    lawandobtained an eviction or-

    ownership.

    We have not approached the

Sheriff for enforcement of the or-

    Armedrobbers return toSWCBD

    JAMEY GORDON

    After a respite, the SomersetWest

    CBD experienced an armed rob-

    bery last Friday that recalled

memories of the spate of armed

robberies that rocked the CBD be-

tween June and August last year.

On Friday, the Vodacom store in

    the Helderberg Village Walk was

robbed by three men at 09:25. This

after an armed robbery in progress,

    was foiledat thisstoreon2December.

    Since June last year,Markham,Mr

    Price, American Swiss (which was

hit twice), Telkom, Legit, Mojos and

Truworths have all been targeted by

    armed robbers. American Swiss and

    Telkomhavesinceclosedupshopand

    moved out of Main Road.

    SomersetWest residentKevinPerrinswas

in the Vodacom store during the robbery on

    Friday.

He was seated at a consultants desk when

he felt something being pushed in his side.

He turned around and looked into the face

    of oneof the robbers,whowasholdinga load-

    ed gun to his side.

Both I and another customer were forced

into the storeroom along with six or seven

Vodacom employees, and commanded to lie

down on the ground, says Perrins, whowas

    traumatisedby theexperienceandexperien-

    ces flashbacks.

The men instructed one of the employees

to show them the safe and to open it.

A woman in a store next to Vodacom saw

in the reflection of a window opposite the

store how staff were being led to the back

of the store. She ran to the office of the centre

    manager, who alerted the police.

A staff member at another business in the

centre was coming from the toilet when she

saw the men run out of Vodacom with large

canvas shopping bags. They left in a Volks-

wagen vehicle with a CY registration.

According to a police report, the men

    helped themselves to anundisclosedamount

of cash and cellphones before fleeing the

    scene. Somerset West Police spokesperson

Sergeant Suzan Jantjies says a possible link

between the attempted armed robbery and

the latest incident is being investigated.

    According toHelderbergVillageWalkcen-

tre manager, Yolanda van der Spuy, Voda-

comremained closed for the rest of theweek-

end and was open for business on Monday,

but with a reduced staff complement.

    VanderSpuysaysmore stringent security

    measures will be enforced.

    WhenDistrictMail visited the centre earli-

er this week, it appeared as if business had

returned to normal. Glynn Bell, owner of

Sweet Mana, says she still feels safe in the

    shoppingcentre,andtoprovethis, shepoints

to the fact that she, unlike many other busi-

nesses, does not have a security gate as a de-

    terrent. Armedrobberiesarehappeningev-

erywhere. It is unfortunately the times we

    are living in, says Bell.

Monica Durr of CrumBites says she is not

shaken by the armed robbery. She ex-

plains that if she was shaken by the

    incident, it would scare customers,

which wouldnt be good for business.

    DaveBerning, owner of Daves Bar-

bershop, says he has taken precau-

    tions and implores other businesses

to also act responsibly and take pre-

    cautions. Berning advises that busi-

    nessesconsideroperating likea jewel-

    lery store show customers items

they want to see and lock them away

soon after. Imnot saying that its ev-

    eryonefor themselves.Weasbusiness

owners in the centre do watch out for

    one another. However, business own-

ers must understand that its all very

well having a big insurance policy

that pays out in the case of an armed

robbery, but also that such an inci-

dent is very traumatic for staff and custom-

erswhomight be involved, which could lead

    to a bigger loss.

Stefanie Piek of The Crafters Inn reckons

living in fear just wont help. She believes

in taking back the town and had therefore

participated in a recently held crimemarch.

Babette du Toit of Zing Digit is not con-

cerned. Where are you guaranteed to be

safe? Whether you are working in a mall or

shopping centre, youll never be completely

safe. It appears that SomersetWest has been

a sleepy hollow for quite some time, but ev-

eryone needs to become aware of the crime

situation and adapt a Joburg mentality

    about it, says Babette.

However, a store next to Vodacom will be

moving to a new location. According to the

employees of Seven Point Five, its not that

business has been affected by the armed rob-

bery, but that customers are shaken.

The Somerset West Police say they have

made five arrests in connection with armed

    robberies in theSomersetWestCBD.Howev-

    er, thesuspectshavenotyetbeenconclusive-

    ly linked with the incidents.

Vodacom at Helderberg Village Walk was the latest store

to be targeted by armed robbers last Friday. This after an

    N2:what theauthorities say

    JAMEY GORDON

Making the N2 safer for motorists travel-

ling along the route remains an ongoing

    battle.

Following the article Young man fights for

life (DistrictMail, 15 January), the newspaper

    approached various role players responsible

for ensuring motorists safety on the N2 to en-

quire about their strategy, how they arework-

ing together to achieve it and whether they

    think enough is being done.

The provincial police, however, failed to an-

swer the questions and merely provided com-

mentsimilar to that theyhadsent for inclusion

    in last weeks article.

    Macassar resident Julius Jantjies, whose

nightmare attack on the N2 was featured on

the frontpage lastweek, is still in the intensive

care unit of the Vincent Pallotti Hospital in

Pinelands, but out of the induced coma he had

been in since his admission. He is expected to

undergo reconstructive surgery to his badly

damaged right eye today (Thursday 22 Janu-

    ary), his father tells DistrictMail.

JP Smith, the City of Cape Towns Mayoral

Committee Member for Safety and Security,

says the City is negotiating with a private in-

surance company to roll out a Highway Unit

that will only patrol these freeways and help

improve safety along the N2, R300 and Baden

Powell Road, as well as work on the N1.

    Currently, Law Enforcement and theMetro

    PolicepatrolalongtheN2andR300,amongoth-

ers. Metro Police have also undertaken stings

inwhich they have used a broken down bait

car with a single female officer with backup

    waitingadistanceawaytorespondintheevent

that theyare able to lure the attackers. The car

was unmarked and the officer in plain clothes.

It would stop along different sections of the

road, but unfortunately the regular attackers

could not be lured out of hiding, Smith says.

Smith says that the Freeway Management

System CCTV camera operators are on alert

for any suspicious activity. However, he says

it is difficult to distinguish between possible

attackers and people crossing the freeway.

As it is illegal to cross the freeway, I have

advised the Traffic Department to increase

their enforcement against pedestrians, but as

these often consist of children andadultswith-

out identification, the enforcement is cumber-

    some and time-consuming, says Smith.

    Smithsuggests thepoliceinitiateacoordina-

tion process to effectively police the matter.

The police need to raise this at the Provin-

cial Joint Operating Committee meeting with

all the other role players and agree on every-

bodys role. In the absence of police doing so,

the city canattempt to initiate this, butwecon-

trol aminute percentage of the resources, ex-

    plains Smith.

Smith further believes Sanral and the pro-

vincial government, who are responsible for

    theN2andR300,shouldimprovelightingalong

    the roadas theCCTVcamerasarenot effective

in the dark and motorists cannot see hidden

obstacles. He adds they should also repair fen-

cing along the edge of the road reserve. Until

the fencing is repaired, there is no hope of

meaningfully safeguarding the road as the at-

    tackerscaneasily flee thesceneanddisappear.

We [also] need more robust fencing that can

    survive vandalism, says Smith.

    BridgesedgesacrosstheN2andR300,aswell

as central crash barriers, need to be fenced to

    preventpeoplefromclimbingoverthebarriers

and dropping things frombridges, Smith says,

    addinga short trial sectionwasdonebySanral

    on the R300.

Sanral spokesperson Vusi Mona says they

have a number of crime prevention measures

    inplace, including therepairingof fencingand

improving lighting, and the use of thermally

enabled cameras to aid night-time detection.

    Close call at

    midnight

    DELIAH BRINKHUIS

Helderberg residents spoke out about their

experiences on the N2 after our front page

story last week detailed how a young man

was left fighting for his life after a piece of

a concrete block was thrown through his

    cars windscreen. The incident happened

just before the R300 bridge in the direction

    towards Cape Town.

    Somerset West resident Gisela Mller

spoke about the night she had to force her

car to just keep going after a concrete boul-

der was placed across the road also just

    before the R300 turn-off.

It was 00:30 in the night on Sunday 4 Janu-

ary, and Mller and her parents were on

their way to her office in Parow after she

had been alerted to a possible break-in.

I was driving in the left lane and saw the

boulder when I was about 150 m from the

R300 turn-off. It was too late to avoid it and

I drove over it, splitting it in half, she says.

She forced her car onwards, as she had

seen a man standing next to the road. Just

past the bridge, her BMW120 came to a halt.

    Mllernoticed that thecarbehindheralso

hit the boulder and came to a standstill.

Luckily a breakdown truck passed them

and she flashed her lights at the driver, who

    stopped to help.

He hurriedly got us in his truck and said

we should get away from there as soon as

    possible, she says.

A friend picked them up in Hindle Road

and took them to the Parow Police Station.

The damage to her car comes to R180 000,

as the engine and gearbox had seized.

    Thisis thethirdtimeinthelastnineyears,

Mller says, that her life has been in danger

on the notorious Hell Run, as the N2 is

known. She narrowly escaped harm when

a rockwas thrown at her windscreen, while

she was unscathedwhen a rockwas thrown

at a car driving in front of her.

She now no longer uses the N2. It takes

double the time to get towork now, but I feel

    safer, she says.

Hayde, under Giselas BMW, which had its

engine and gearbox seized after Gisela

forced it over a concrete boulder on the N2

    Assault casepostponed

The two suspects charged with assault

with intention to cause grievous bodily

harm after allegedly attacking a woman

with a hammer in July last year appeared

    in the StrandMagistrates Court

    on Friday 16 January.

    The DistrictMail reported last

    year that Vanessa Cunningham of

    TownshipAnimalRescuehadalleg-

edly been attacked at her home in

Nomzamo on 26 July at about 21:00.

    Cunningham says she was over-

powered and beaten to the ground

by sixmen, and suffered four blows

    toherheadwithahammer.Shewas

also hit several times with a plank

    with a nail in it.

    Two people, Princess and Zama

    Manikivana, were arrested in con-

nection with the incident. The case

was postponed until 17 February. All three

    parties attendedamediation sessionon 26 Ju-

ly, but Cunningham describes the mediation

as a disaster and says the Manikivanas

claimed that she attacked them first with a

    knife.

    Since the attack, Cunninghams seven-

    year-olddaughterhasbeenremovedby social

    services because of her unsafe

    living conditions.

    Cunningham has also

    moved out of Nomzamo and

    has submitted an application

    to regain custody of her

    daughter.

The case will be heard on

    24 February.

    Cunningham says she suf-

    fered a massive concussion

    duringtheattack,andisstrug-

gling as her memory is not

    what itused tobe.Shealso suf-

    fered minor injuries on her

    back and her wrist. Cunning-

ham says she still goes into

Nomzamo for her work at the Township Ani-

    Useof circusanimalsdecried,buthowdoyou treat yourpet?

I saw the short article about some

scarce protest against the use of

animals in the circus. It seems that

    somepeople arenot afraid tomake

    fools of themselves.

Of course all animals must be

    treated with respect and animal

abuse is a crime, but some people

    areyellingatotherswhile theyfor-

get how they are handling their

own pets. Putting them outside in

the morning when going to work,

so that they can care for them-

    selves isnt thatabuse?Whenone

    adopts an animal it automatically

    goes together with humane, con-

tinuous care. Would one put chil-

dren outside in the morning to

    take care of themselves?

    People ride onhorses for compe-

titions; people use cows to provide

milk, butter and meat; and people

adopt a small little kitten, but

    when they move elsewhere the

grown-up cat is left behind. The

same can be said when people go

    on holiday.

As human beings, we have been

    instructedtotakecareof thewhole

    creation. Taking care and respec-

    ting the whole creation doesnt

    meanlettingthecreationtakecare

of itself, allowing some people to

    kill others for some fare-sought

idea, allowing the street people to

die on the streets or the poor to die

    of hunger.

    The human race has expanded

in such away that animal habitats

have shrunk to the point that we

must take care of them, since we

no longer provide them with the

living space they need to survive.

If they are well treated, managed

and cared for in a zoo, circus orna-

ture reserve, is it less good than to

train a dog to obey his master?

Lets think a little further than

the length of our noses and stop

    makingfoolsofourselves.Acircus

has a purpose and duty to the com-

    munity lets respect it.Donot for-

get that the animal rights people

are using and abusing the commu-

nity with false statements to get

    money, influence and power.

If everybody would take care of

their animals in the same way as

the circus, zoo and nature re-

    serves management, the world

    would be a better place.

As I left my house for work on Tuesday

    morning (20 January), I discovered a ve-

Asmywife had an appointment at the

We walked around and knocked on

    DALEEN FOUCH

The Mountain View shopping centre in

Gordons Bay has reportedly been sold

for R27,75 million and a further

R40 million upgrade is on the cards.

    Riccardo Scarpellini, director of Mil-

props 365 Pty Ltd, told theDistrictMail that

his company bought the shopping centre in

a deal concluded at the end of last year

    through a Johannesburg-based property

    group, Icon Properties.

He has big plans for the shopping centre

and plans to upgrade it to the tune of

    R40 million.

Scarpellini says the plan is to not only do

a cosmetic revamp of the centre, but also

to increase its trading area. Hewould, how-

ever, not go into details of how this will be

done, but did divulge that underground

    parking options are being considered.

Milprops 365 Pty Ltd owns the Laguna

    Mall in Langebaan.

    Scarpellini says the reasonGordons Bay

was chosen for the investment is because

the pretty seaside village has a lot of po-

tential. There is big interest fromnational

retailers and there is a lot of growth inGor-

    dons Bay.

DistrictMail reported last year that Gor-

dons Bay can expect an economic boost

from the revamp of the old Vila Via Hotel

after it was acquired by Cameroonian bil-

lionaire Samuel Foyou and his Krystal Ho-

tels and Resorts group. The renovations on

    thehotel, renamedKrystalBeachHotel, are

expected to be completed in the first half

of this year and run into the hundreds of

    millions of rands.

Danie Miller, chairperson of the Gor-

dons Bay Business Forum, says Gordons

Bay is gaining popularity and attracting in-

vestment. He says prominent people are

buying property in the area. He says his

hope for the revamp of the Mountain View

shopping centre is that thebig greyparking

area is spruced up with trees and flowers,

as thiswas one of the original zoning condi-

tions for the development of the centre.

    Spotting a lion

    on every corner

    When our ancestors were running

around in loincloths looking for food,

it was very important to be aware of

threats in the environment. If you

hoped to survive, it paid you to re-

    memberwhereandwhenlastyousaw

    a lion.

    Our brains

    evolutionary

    wiring is still

    todaygearedto-

    wards identify-

    ing threats,

    which we in-

    stinctively feel

    the need to re-

    act to to avoid

    being eaten.

    The difference

    now, thanks to

    the informa-

    tion and com-

    munication

revolution, is that we see a lion on every

corner. We are continually being bom-

barded by bad news on a global front.

    Whybadnews?Becausebadnewssells

and there is plenty of it out there to sell.

Our brains are predisposed to assimi-

lating bad news, which was fine for the

odd occasion when you stumbled across

    a lion.However,nowadayswitha lionon

every corner, our flight or fight response

is being triggered non-stop. This is no

more evident than in financial markets.

    Every day a market commentator

will explain why the rand/dollar ex-

    change ratewent up/down and/orwhy

the stock market when up/down. If we

can explain the movement, then we

think we are in control. Heaven forbid

we face the reality that we may not be

    in control.

The biggest risk facing investors in

2015 is their instinctive need to do some-

    thing.

At the school I was attending it was compulsory to

have aptitude tests done. The resultswere that I

appeared to be belowaverage intelligencewhen it

came to subjects likemathematics and science. For

me this was a huge problem because it is crucial to have mathematics and

that I had to drop mathematics and science I went to Morne for help. Morne

immediately took me into his school. In addition, over the past two years that I

have been at SWPS our maths teachers, Morne and David, have taught me to

climb the mountain that is called maths. Thus, I will be able to followmy dream of

becoming a Commercial Pilot next year. For that I am forever grateful towards

Everyone is treated individually and no matter what, you will never feel like an

outsider once you are part of the SWPS family. SWPS is a diverse and

accommodating school. The students can express themselves freely. The school

prepares the students for university by teaching them from grade 8 to be responsible

for themselves. It is important what school your child goes to. It will influence them to

With guidance from two great teachers Morne and Marianne,

this challenge was overcome successfully. Three quotes by

Morne I applied throughout my studies was the following: 1. "If

SWPShas been quite the experience for the last six years. There are

some teachers who have made a huge impact on my life that I will

never forget. They helped me grow as a person. At SWPS you will

find a group of people who accept you for who you are and the

memories will not soon fade - especially the maths. I am going to

    study psychology next year.

I look back at the past five years that I have been at SWPS as very

successful years. Years, in which I have grown socially and academically.

All this would have, however, never been possible without the great

contribution made by the dedicated educators and headmaster. Let met

also add that this institution has instilled intrinsic values in me that I will

cherish for the rest of my life. It has set me on a very sound academic road

that I will follow as long as I can. At SWPS I was able to achieve the results

which have enabled me to gain acceptance for Medicine at Stellenbosch

University next year. I will never lose sight of what SWPSmeans to me and

what it stands for. I will forever be proud to be a member of this illustrious

    group.
