4-H PROJECT SPOTLIGHT….

PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT Submitted by Laurie Van Dyne, Project Leader

Lights, camera, action. This is what you think of when looking through a camera. Whether we are the model or the one taking the picture, we are all intrigued by a camera. Actually, the camera is one of the most popular Christmas and birthday gift items requested by kids and adults.

My name is Laurie Van Dyne and I have had the wonderful opportunity of providing leadership to the Photography project for the past 5 years. In the photography project, we try to encourage self-expression while teach-ing proper use of photographic equipment and developing processes. Photography provides opportunities for career exploration and promoting 4-H through photographic communication.

When 4-H’ers join the photography project they are afforded the oppor-tunity to participate in county and district contests while receiving recognition and a blue award rib-bon for their photo(s). Senior age 4-H’ers can also enter their photos in the State 4-H Contest which is held during the State 4-H Roundup in the month of June. Some of our members who have participated in the District 4-H Contest have received a “best of show” award for their work.

Looking for photography resources? 4-H Resources are available for use in the photography project, as well as many great public and free, resources through the internet. The Texas 4-H website has Photography Project activity sheets available in Beginner, Interme-diate, and Advanced. Each publication has a focus on project expe-rience, career exploration, resources, and fun activity.
