My Dear Friends, A lot of good things have happened in our District since our last visit. On May 18th & 19th, we had our District Conference and on the evening of the 18th, we had our Bi-District Foundation Banquet. Both events were well attended and I was very proud of the fact that all of our major presenters were ladies - three wonderful ladies who happen to be outstanding Rotarians. The conference started with the traditional kick-off picnic on the 17th and I will always be grateful to Carleen and Jerry Burger for opening their home to fellow Rotarians once again this year. This is something that the Burgers have done for a number of years and I think that it is extremely nice of them to do so. Thanks Carleen and thanks Jerry! The Bi-District Foundation Banquet was a very classy event and all attendees were touched by Caroline Jones’ presentation. I am very thankful for all the help and cooperation that we received from our friends in District 5770. I am also very proud of the friendship that has evolved between the two District Governors. DG Mike Blevins is a dear friend and a true Rotarian. Even though I really enjoyed the conference as a whole, the most exciting part for me was the handing out of the awards. In any given situation, there are those that are truly dedicated to the cause and it felt really good to recognize these individuals. For this purpose, we cam up with a new award: the District 5750 ABCD Award for performance Above and Beyond the Call of Duty. Naturally, the highlight of the presentations was recognizing soon to be DGN Michelle Schaefer as the Rotarian of the Year. All through this last Rotary year, Michelle worked harder and with more enthusiasm than anybody else. Thanks Michelle! District Governor’s Letter (Cont.)

Well Dear Friends, this is my last write-up as your Governor and by the time you

read this note, we will have a brand new District Governor.

I feel that the line-up of incoming District Governors that we have in place - Will Beckman (2012-2013), Art Bode (2013-2014), and Michelle Schaefer (2014-15) - is extremely impressive and that District 5750 is in very good hands. The very last thing I will do before officially becoming a PDG is present the Charter of our District’s newest Rotary Club. The Boulevard Club’s Charter has been signed by RI President Kalyan Banerjee and the club is a reality. In closing, I want to thank all the wonderful Rotarians of our District for giving Annig and me one of the best and most memorable years of our lives. I also want to wish our friends, Will and Sally, the very best for the upcoming year. As always, let us go out there and make good things happen. Moush Tourian District Governor

South Oklahoma City - Great Year!

Touching our neighbors at home and around the world… In Kenya, a program called “Leadership for Life” allows kids to attend school who would otherwise be frozen out of the mix. By sponsoring one of their students, we provide school uniforms, laundry, food, and medical care. Also, South OKC Rotary is providing a one-time

gift for creating a fishing pond and sewing center to help make uniforms. We are also giving extra support to Polio Plus again this year. This year, we’re supporting many of our programs in South OKC. Congratulations, Pres-ident Ted, on a great year, and to our own Sharon Voorhees for winning District Awards

from Rotary 5750.

Dog Park Brings Stillwater Rotary Clubs, OSU, and the City of Stillwater Together The dog-loving residents of Stillwater have talked about creating a dog park in Stillwater for a number of years. That dream became a reality on June 11th, when the Stillwaggin’ Dog Park was dedicated at 801 W. 11th Avenue in Stillwater. More than 20 dogs and their owners were on hand for the opening ceremony. There were bones and water for the canine

guests. Earlier in the year, a five-member board was formed to move from discussion to concept. Board members Matt Hull (President, Stillwater Rotary Club) and Patricia Rayas-Duarte (Member, Stillwater Centennial Rotary Club) ensured that Rotary was well-represented on the board chaired by OSU Vice President Lee Bird. Financial commitments from the Stillwater, the Stillwater Centennial and the Stillwater Frontier clubs totaling $4,000 were matched by Oklahoma State University, and the City of Stillwater. OSU students and phys-

ical plant employees prepared the park. Rotarian board member Patricia Rayas-Duarte noted, “The involvement of the Stillwater Rotary clubs in supporting the dog park reflects our commitment of improving our community in any way we can. We understand the power that parks and dogs have in the

life of our community—they bring us together.” The dog park is a “use at your own risk” facility. Rules are posted at the park. Owners are

responsible for their dog(s) at all times. Dog waste stations with bags are provided for

owners to remove waste. A dog water fountain and non-working fire hydrants will be add-

ed to the park in the near future.

Rotarians were on hand to open the Stillwaggin’ Dog Park. Matt Hull from the Stillwater Rotary Club

along with OSU VP Lee Bird and Rotarians Patricia Rayas-Duarte, Bob Darcy and City Council member

Philip Pina from the Stillwater Centennial Rotary Club.

Stillwater Rotary Clubs - Grocery Grab

The Stillwater, Stillwater-Centennial, and Stillwater-Frontier Rotary Clubs partnered to present a Grocery Grab event in Stillwater on Saturday, May 12. This was the first time in recent memory that the three clubs collaborated on a fundraising event and the results

were impressive! Kim Turnham, the grand prize winner, had her name selected on Stillwater’s Tv-31 “Morning Edition” by Charlie Fowler, owner of Stillwater Consumer’s IGA, the grocery store partner for the event. Turnham received a $250 gift certificate for meat and a 60-

second run through the store in which she amassed $205.15 in her shopping cart. The morning of the event, two other winners were selected onsite from the 15,775 ticket stubs still in the hopper. Billie Focht and Starla Johnson each received a 30-second run through Consumer’s IGA. Billie Focht, whose daughter Melissa served as the “runner and grabber,” collected $68 in groceries. Starla Johnson, who made her run on behalf of Stillwater’s Mission of Hope, got a whopping $321 of groceries, mainly laundry detergent and cleaning supplies for the homeless shelter. Stillwater Club President Matt Hull noted, “This was our hope—that at least someone representing a human or animal services agency would be one of our winners and this fundraiser could benefit still more local organizations.” Frontier Club President Cristy Morrison added, “As ticket stubs were turned in, it was great to see all the Rotarians who donated tickets to various service and church organizations in the community. The purpose of the fundraiser was to provide mon-ey for the three clubs’ commitment to a simplified matching grant project in Argentina and for each club to have money from which to fund the many local requests we receive. To see Rotary’s ‘Service above Self’ motto put into action on such a broad scale was very ex-

citing.” Although final bookkeeping for the event is not quite complete, the three clubs raised well over $13,000 through their collective effort. Centennial Club President Jennifer Paustenbaugh observed, “We were pleased by the results of our first-time effort. We look forward to growing the event and also to strengthening the working relationships among the three clubs in the future.” As part of the preparation for the event, Frontier Club member Mike Veldman built and donated an impressive ticket hopper.
