District Governor Wilma Murphy

Our fall conference was a huge success and there are so many people to thank. My sincere thanks to all the Lions from Greater Falls Run and Stephens City who organized the conference and made it so successful. Our presenters were outstand-ing and they provided interesting and thought-provoking presenta-tions. We had several great service projects, including the Bikes for the World that collected 172 bikes, Stamps for the Wounded, Diabetes screening, collection of new bras for RAM/LAMP and food for Stafford Emergency Relief through Voluntary Efforts (S.E.R.V.E.). We had fun raffle baskets, made or donated by the Greater Falls Run Lions

Club. The conference also provided the opportunity for several Foundation meetings and presentations. A special thanks goes to our guest speaker, International Director Tom Gordon, who not only gave an inspiring keynote address Saturday night but also taught a Guiding Lion class Sunday morning with 32 attendees. IPDGs Sally Kenavan and John Knepper presented well-deserved awards to our District 24-L members. Last, but certainly not least, thank you to all our Lions who traveled from near and far to attend and make this a memorable weekend. I truly believe in the saying “surround yourself with good people” and I’m fortunate to have the best in District 24-L! It’s great to be a new District Governor during the year the Lions Club welcomes its first female President. A new initiative, New Voices: Beyond the Horizon, focuses on contributions made by women and bringing larger numbers of women into our service community. New Voices are Lions who demonstrate exceptional influence, as it relates to women, in Service, Membership, Leadership or Marketing. Lions that have supported women and share their story on social media could be in-vited to attend an exclusive seminar with International President Gudrun in Milan. For further de-tails and step-by-step instructions log onto the LCI website and search on New Voices Initiative. I mentioned awards last month but feel it important to remind you to review the applications so you will know what is required to receive an award. They are accessible on the lionsofvirginia.org and valions.org websites. You are also encouraged to review the Visitation guidelines and make an effort to visit as many clubs as possible. Not only do you meet new Lions and make new friends, but it is a great way to share ideas for new service projects and fundraisers and possibly team up on joint projects.

Yours in service,

DG Wilma [email protected] (540) 361-4292

Second Vice District Governor Glen Logan

The Inaugural District 24-L Fall Conference is now in the District history books. Congratulations to all who worked so hard to make it a very success-ful conference. Each day was packed with informative, full-filled activities, from Friday night’s luau featuring an island buffet and performances by the Palm Tree Girls and the AAA Lions Dancing Wahinis, to diabetes screening, to roundtable discussions and board meetings all the way through to International Tom Gordon’s inspiring talk Saturday night.

On September 16, four AAA Lions proudly assisted with annual Alexandria Triathalon Just Tryan It. This charitable organization assists families fighting childhood cancer. Proceeds from the Alexandria event will support families in treatment for pediatric cancer in the greater Baltimore-Washington, DC metropolitan area. Just Tryan It also sup-ports families in the Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill areas of North Carolina. Just Tryan It’s financial support has had a significant impact on the housing needs of patients and families. Forty five percent (45%) of their funds are used to stabilize housing through mortgage and rental payments. See you at the next District function! Yours in service, 2DG Glen [email protected] ((571) 426-5048

DG Wilma Murphy and Bikes for the World Chair Jim Purton give a great shout-out of CONGRATULATIONS to the Colonial Forge High School (CFHS) Leo Club for winning the Leo Club Bikes for the World Competition at the 2018 District 24-L Fall Conference. The Leos won $100 to provide toward their fundraising efforts. The CFHS Leo Club is a service organi-zation that is sponsored by the Stafford Lions

Club (Leo Advisor Lion Susan Shaefer). They pro-vide opportunities for club members to serve their school and community by helping out at school events like Talon Tailgate, serving food and cleaning up at the Chorus shows, and provid-ing meals for drama shows. CFHS Leos also hold fundraisers, including Cici's Pizza Nights and their own Pancake Breakfast event at the school to support various charities like Stafford Junction.

Member Orientation – The foundation in Lionism. The importance of new member orientation cannot be emphasized enough. The information presented during ori-entation provides a foundation for new members. It helps them understand how the club functions, what their role will be and gives them the big picture of D24-L and LCI. When new members are properly informed, they are more likely to feel comfortable with the club, become actively involved in club activities and remain in Lions for years. Look for the “Membership Orientation” power-point presentation to be out soon for club use.

A Tribute to Lion Eldon Wright by Fairfax Host Lions Club

(L to R) King Lion Marty Lockard, Lion Elden Wright and PDG Woody Woodward, President of VLEI

In June, the Fairfax Host Lions Club recognized Elden Wright for his many contributions over 35 years as a Lion. Lions Club Presi-dent Marty Lockard presented a check for $1,500 to the Virginia Lions Eye Institute (VLEI) for a scholarship grant in special recog-nition of Elden Wright’s lengthy and dedicated service to VLEI.

VLEI President Woody Woodward presented Elden Wright, who is the Past President of VLEI, a Progressive Humanitarian Recognition Certificate. Fairfax Host Lions also presented Elden a special citation of his many accomplishments as a Lion. He planned and led

many local service projects. Among them are community blood drives resulting in over 3300 units of life-saving blood for the Red Cross, and eyeglass dispensing for needy persons for which he managed charity funds, qualified individuals needing vision correction, and coordinated the provision of 50 or more pair of eyeglasses each year. As President and Chief Executive of the VLEI, which is co-sponsored by Lions Clubs and the Inova Health System, Elden coordinated free eye care for needy patients with the Inova Cares Lions Eye Clinic. He managed funding for continuing medical education for nurses and para-professionals, equipment purchases for local not-for-profit hospitals, scholarship awards to sight handicapped individuals, clinical research, and rehabilitation of visually impaired individuals through low vision evaluations and use of low vision aids. Elden led significant charity fund raising activities over the years, enabling the Lions Club to complete its mission of service to needy people in the com-munity. He led the annual Citrus Fruit Sales, and his personal commitment assured successful sales raising nearly three-quarters of all Fairfax Lions charity resources. Elden also managed multi-grill cooking operations for two Lions Club food sales each year (July 4, Fall Festival). He transported the grills, provided specialty equipment, assured compliance with food safety standards, and personally cooked for one-half of all grill operations. Elden was Fairfax Host Lions Club President and in 2016 was named “Lion of the Year.” A genuinely dedicated servant of his fellow man, Elden Wright’s actions

exemplify the Lions’ motto of “We Serve.”

From District 24-L Relieving Hunger Chair

Nenita Yu

We had a successful canned food collection drive at the District 24-L Fall Conference. Lions donated well over two large box-loads of canned goods which were deliv-ered to Stafford Emergency Relief through Volunteer Efforts (SERVE). Thanks to all who donated. Winner of the raffle received International President Gudrun Ingvadottir’s personal pin presented by District Governor Wilma Murphy. In August, Lions from the Alexandria Asian American, Alexandria Lincolnia, Alexandria Watergate, Falls Church-Annandale and Lake Jackson-Mid County Lions Clubs volunteered with Lifeline International Foundation and Masons/Order of the Eastern Star,

Nellie Custis Chapter, to package 10,152 meals.! The event was organized by Rise Against Hunger (formerly Stop Hunger Now) , an international hunger relief non-profit organization that coordinates the packaging and distribution of food and other life-changing aid to peo-ple in developing nations. The 60 volunteers completed the packaging of the meals in an amazing

90 minutes! Many thanks to the members of all the Clubs who supported this wonderful project.

Diabetes month is November, you may want to start thinking about what you may do at a meeting or an event to raise awareness about diabetes. There are lots of promotional material to raise awareness published by the Lions. The LCI Member Center offers great programs and suggestions, so take some time to see how your Club can increase awareness (http://members.lionsclubs.org/EN/serve/diabetes/index.php). Diabetes is growing at epidemic proportions — who doesn’t know at least one person with diabetes? Did you know there are programs available paid for by Medicare that provide a one-year lifestyle change course that successfully can help you lose weight and prevent diabetes? Studies have shown that it takes a long-term commitment and consistent reinforcement to lose weight and keep that weight off permanently. For more information about Diabetes Prevention and the programs available, go to: https://www.cdc.gov/diabetes/prevention/index.html Maybe your club may help sponsor a diabetes prevention program by contacting a local prevention Program. These can be found on www.DiabetesLocal.org (click on Education and then Diabetes Preven-tion Programs). You can control your own health — take those positive steps now! From District 24-L Global Service Team (GST) District Coordinator Sharon The Global Action Team is comprised of the Global Membership Team, Global Leadership Team, and Global Service Team. When we, as Members, combine a focus on membership, leadership, and service, our clubs – and each individual member-- gain focus and renewed passion to help those in our communities and beyond through Lions and the diversi-ty of service opportunities. A successful service project portfolio requires commitment, passion, and creativity. The enabler of a successful service project portfolio is a Strategic Plan that identifies service projects which will meet the needs of the hearts, soul, mind, abilities and time of the members. Remem-ber that fundraisers are the enablers of many service projects because they provide monies needed that go back to community members through projects such as food baskets, eye glasses, hearing aids, dona-tions to homeless shelters, or providing backpacks for children. During the first part of the year, I have visited three very different clubs with very different service project portfolios. Each of these clubs is extremely successful with their service and fundraising pro-jects and very proud of their visibility in the community and the people they have served. The Lions portfolio has been changed to reflect new challenges in which Lions can be successful within their communities and throughout the world: Diabetes, Environment, Hunger, Vision, and Childhood Cancer. But don’t forget to look at the needs of your community and the needs of your members. Some members may be more hands-on, while others want the fellowship of Lions but because of age, infirmi-ty, work and/or family commitments, would rather personally donate money that will be put into service than participate in service projects. Each individual Lions Club and each individual Lion already has the skills to inspire, develop, and implement service projects that will attract multi-generational participants, help raise the visibility of Lions in local communities and involve more members participating in service. What they need is a compelling, personal “elevator speech” that will capture the interest of someone who asks them about Lions in about 30 seconds and opens the door to a continuing conversation and perhaps a new member! With more members, there are more hands to do service and to support fundraisers that increase awareness of Lions within our communities. With more members we are able to have even more positive impact on those to whom Lions is often their only “lifeline”, whether it is getting a wheel chair ramp installed, glasses, a Thanksgiving food bas-ket, or a scholarship a young student for equine assisted therapy to promote physical, occupational and emotional growth for a child with special needs. More members provide the additional hands and hearts to increase our positive impact on those in need – locally and globally. Yours in Service, PCC Sharon Hart, GST
