Young Bainville squad ready for district tourneyBY HARRY LIPSIEASIDNEY HERALD
The Bainville girls basketball team isextremely young. With no seniors, theBulldogs rely on mostly freshmen andsophomores for playing time. Bainville islooking to peak at tournament time andearn a spot at divisionals in Wolf Point.
“We have come a long way since the be-ginning of the season. The girls haveshowed a lot of potential when they focuson the fundamentals,” Bulldog coachTanya Wilson said.
While Bainville is young, the Bulldogsdo return experience. Sophomores Shel-by Allard, Liza Harmon, Marlee Schmitzand Bonita Sipe saw extensive varsityplaying time a season ago. Allard,Harmon and Schmitz give the Bulldogs
an athletic backcourt while Sipe, a postplayer, averages 10 rebounds a game.
Junior Deidre Sheehan is a forwardplaying basketball for the first time.Freshman Torey Kragness gives the Bull-dogs height down low at 5-8. Katie Heenand Jackie Horob are a pair of freshmenguards that round out the eight-playerroster.
With the team’s quickness and athleti-cism, Wilson likes to see her team play anup-tempo style.
“We like to play pressure defense andreally get up and down the court,” shesaid. “But to play that style of game, wehave to stay out of foul trouble and takecare of the ball. Those are both going tobe very important for us to have a suc-cessful tournament.”
Playing solid transition defense issomething the Bulldogs have been work-ing on, the coach said. The Bulldogs hopeto control the pace of the game and forceother teams to play their style.
Of the improvements Bainville hasmade this season, post play is at the top of
the list for Coach Wilson.“I am very encouraged by the play of
our girls down low as of late. They havereally started to box out and come downwith a lot of rebounds,” she said.
Wilson thinks the District 2-C field istough and deep this season. “We have acouple of very good contenders this sea-son. Fairview, Culbertson and Circle areprobably the top three teams coming in,but there are quite a few teams in themiddle that are very even battling forthose spots as well,” she said. “I expect ahard-fought, competitive tournament.”
To be successful at districts, Bainvillewill need to put together four good quar-ters of basketball each game, the four-year head coach said.
“We will need to play 32 minutes of fun-damental basketball. If we can use thestrengths of all eight of our players andwork together, it will be a good tourna-ment for us,” Wilson said.
The eighth-seeded Bulldogs are slatedto face the ninth seed in Brockton.Bainville defeated the Warriors 69-54 ear-lier in the season.
“It will be very important to play cleanbasketball to win against Brockton. We’llneed to take good care of the ball, play fo-cused and keep our heads the wholegame,” Wilson said.
‘We have come a long way thisseason. The girls have showed a
lot of potential when they focus onthe fundamentals.’

The 2009-10 season has been a tremen-dous learning experience for the Brocktongirls basketball team, coach DonLinthicum said.
“The girls are getting a lot of valuablevarsity time this season. None of thesegirls played a lot last season so it’s been agreat opportunity for them,” Linthicumsaid. “We’ve taken our knocks, but thesegirls have continued to work hard to getbetter.”
The Warriors are extremely inexperi-enced with only one junior and one sopho-more on the six-player squad. With histeam’s youth, Linthicum sees a lot of
potential in the program.“These are smart, talented girls. They
are going to continue to improve over thenext couple of seasons,” the veteran coachsaid.
Junior Adrienne Reddoor and sopho-more Mariah Burshia provide experiencefor the young squad. Freshman Shani Red-door and Waverly Bear along with eighth-graders Alex Firemoon and KimberlynBoyd round out the team.
A key to the Warriors’ success will be
staying out of foul trouble and ball han-dling. “With only six players on the team,it really hurts us if we have anyone foulout,” Linthicum said. “Cutting down onour turnovers is something we’ve beenworking on since the beginning of the sea-son. We have really started to improve inthat area as of late.”
The Warriors bring with them two ma-jor strengths to the district tournament.“Our top assets are the girls’ desire tolearn and their love of the sports. A coach
can’t ask anymore out of his team thanthat. It’s a good group to work with,”Linthicum said.
Brockton’s first-year head coach thinksthere are two favorites coming into thetournament. “Fairview and Culbertsonhave to be looked as favorites right now.But there are a lot of good teams in themiddle of the pack fighting for those finalfew spots,” Linthicum said. “It’s tough forsuch a young team to compete in thisleague, but we’ve improved all year long.”

Wildcat squad looks to advance past district tourneyBY HARRY LIPSIEA SIDNEY HERALD
Jason Jessen, first-year head coach ofCircle, is happy with his team’s improve-ment since the beginning season anddoesn’t think the Wildcats have hit theirpeak yet. Circle comes into the tourneyseeded third and with a record of 12-6.
“We’ve been seeing a lot of good things. The girls have continued working to getbetter and earn a spot at divisionals,” hesaid.
One of the biggest improvements theWildcats have made is their intensity.
“Every game, the girls become a little
more aggressive. The last month or so, thegirls have been able to come out strongand stay consistent for four quarter,”Jessen said.
The Wildcats return a pretty good coreof girls back from last year’s team thatfinished second in the conference. SeniorsJana Haynie and Whitney Peterson alongwith sophomore Tina Van Horn are re-turning starters and All-Conference play-ers for Circle.
“Those three players give us a fairly ex-perienced group. They have really provid-
ed good leadership to our younger play-ers,” Jessen said. “And our younger play-ers are getting better every day.”
Three underclassmen have seen exten-sive action this season. Junior post play-ers Janae Arnston and Shaylee Hanceprovide good size inside while sophomoreAli Fritz see time at guard for the Wild-cats.
One of the team’s biggest strength is itsunselfishness. “These girls work togethervery well. There is not a selfish player inthe bunch,” Jessen said. “Because of that,we have very balanced scoring. On anygiven night, we could have three or fourplayers in double digits.”
Jessen thinks the district is tight, and itshould make for a great tournament. “It’sgoing to be a battle for those four spots.Fairview, Culbertson and us are seeded asthe top three teams, but everyone is goingto be playing their best basketball. Fromtop to bottom, it’s a very strong group.”
Ever since the Wildcats lost in the loser-out round of district play last season, Cir-cle has had its sights set on making divi-sionals this season. “They were really dis-appointed about not making divisionalslast year,” Jessen said. “The girls haveworked really hard to make it this year.”
Good Luck to all our Girls’ Basketball Players!

Young Cowgirls ready to get back to divisionalsBY HARRY LIPSIEASIDNEY HERALD
The Culbertson girls basketball teamhas youth on its side this season as theCowgirls have just one senior on thesquad.
“We’re very young,” first-year Cowgirlhead coach Chris Olson said. “But thathasn’t affected us this season. The girlshave really adjusted well to a newcoach.”
Culbertson, who is 15-3 on the season, comes into the tournament seeded sec-ond. The Cowgirls will take on Froid-Lake in the first round of districts. Cul-bertson has won both times the twoteams have played.
To say the Cowgirls are young wouldbe accurate, but in no way is the squadinexperienced. Junior guard Janae Rey-nen, sophomore guard Chelbi Brugh andsophomore post players Bailey Nickoloff
and Catlin Hofman started on last year’steam that took second at districts. Ju-nior Morgan Martell and senior MeganGourneau saw plenty of action a seasonago.
“I think it has really helped us this sea-son that all the girls played together lastseason. They are still young, but that ex-perience they have already earned isvery valuable,” Olson said.
Freshman Shelby Weeks and juniortransfer Maria Wind add minutes off thebench for Culbertson. The Cowgirls haveplenty of depth as Olson can go as deepas eight or nine deep. “I think that givesus an advantage. We have the ability tokeep our starters fresh with such astrong bench. That has really helped usthis season,” she said.
One of the major strengths of the teamis its ability to play together, Olson said.“The way these girls pass the ball andplay as a team is a major asset. They
understand the game and really enjoythe team aspects of the game,” she said.
The first-year head coach feels the dis-trict is very tight. “There are a lot ofteams fighting for those four spots at di-visionals,” Olson said. “Everyone is go-ing to bring their ‘A’ game.”
More than anything, Olson expects anexciting tournament. “There are goingto be some upsets and some extremelyclose games. It’s going to be a fun, attimes, an emotional tournament. We arereally excited,” she said.

District 2-C girls basketball12 SUNDAY, FEB. 14, 2010 SIDNEY HERALD
Fairview team goes into districts as top seedThe Fairview girls basketball team
brings a perfect record to Sidney for theDistrict 2-C girls basketball tournament. The Warriors, who are the first seed withan 18-0 record, are looking to keep theirseason alive with a trip to Wolf Point fordivisionals.
Fairview’s experience will be a majorasset as the Warriors look to make a deeprun during tournament season. SeniorsKatie Hardy and Erica Riedel along withjunior Morgan Klose started on last sea-son’s team that won the district title.Stephanie Murphy, a senior transfer fromCharlo, has starting experience on a stateteam. Sophomore guards Jordan Giffordand Tiffany Kittleson saw extensive play-ing time last season.
“I think that’s something that gives us abig advantage. We’re not young or inexpe-rienced anymore, we’re one of the mostexperienced teams in the tournament,”Fairview coach Mark Thompson said.“The girls know what to expect going intodistricts. They’re not going to come acrossanything they haven’t seen before.”
The Warriors have a lot of different
ways they can score. All-State post playersHardy and Murphy give the Warriors aninside presence while All-State guardKlose give Fairview the ability to drive orshoot from the outside. Gifford and Kittle-son are good threats from outside whileRiedel is a good passer and strong offen-sive rebounder.
Depth is also a strength for the War-riors. “It’s been really nice to have thatcomfort zone with our bench,” Thompsonsaid. “Even though we’ve had a couple in-juries to some of our younger players,we’ve still been able to go eight deep andthat’s been nice.”
Kittleson and freshmen Masyn Kloseand Lexi Cayko give the Warriors a boostoff the bench.
Defensive intensity has been a point ofemphasis for Thompson this season.
“We have been a little up and down ondefense this season, but I’ve been reallyhappy with our play the last couple ofgames. Hopefully, that will translate intothe tournament,” he said.
The Warriors earned a big non-confer-ence victory early in the season againstSaco-Whitewater. The Panthers, who de-feated Fairview in a challenge game at lastyear’s divisional tournament, fell 57-40 tothe Warriors. Fairview’s closest games ofthe season were against Circle and Cul-bertson as the Warriors won by marginsof 11 and 12 points, respectively.
“I think those close games are really go-ing to help us down the stretch. In thosegames, we stayed clam, and we’ve beenable to win,” Thompson said. “Coming in-to the tourney, we expect to be in someclose, competitive games. So we’ll have toknow that if we can stay calm and play re-laxed, everything is going to be alright.”
Thompson feels his team and Culbert-son have separated themselves a bit fromthe rest of the pack.
“But you never know during tourna-ment time. I think there are six or seventeams battling for four spots. We play in atough district,” he said.

Red Hawk team hopes to peak at tournament timeThe Froid-Lake girls basketball is start-
ing to hit its stride at the right time.“With every win, the girls’ confidence is
going up. We’ve improved tremendouslysince the start of the season,” Red Hawkcoach Kathy Bernston said.
The Red Hawks, who are seeded sev-enth, return three starters from last year’ssquad that took third in the district. Se-nior forward Jacey Four Bear and juniorsRachel Reiter and Carlie Anderson haveeach started for the last three seasons.
“Those three girls bring a lot to thecourt for us. They have a lot of valuable
experience and leadership that is impor-tant to this team,” Bernston said.
Other than the three returning starters,Froid-Lake is a fairly young team. JuniorDanielle Sunvold, sophomores KacieHove, Shelby O’Toole and Whitney Ander-son along with freshman Callie Hendrick-son have seen extensive action this sea-son.
“Those girls had very little experiencecoming into the season, but they havecome such a long way this year. Everytime they play, they gain confidence and
improve,” Bernston. The Red Hawks struggled early starting
the season 1-7.“No one likes to lose, but we faced some
really good competition. I think in theend, those games will help us this season,”Bernston said.
Froid-Lake bounced back and nowbrings a 6-12 mark into the district tour-ney.
“The girls have always had good atti-tudes, and they have done a really good jobof holding tough. Their spirits have reallybeen lifted after winning some games. Ican’t say enough about the girls,” Bern-ston said.
More than anything, defense is thebiggest asset of the Red Hawks.
“These girls work so hard on the defen-sive side of the ball. We know if we cankeep the opposing team in the 40-pointrange, we will have a chance to win thegame,” Bernston said.
At districts, Bernston thinks shootingwill be a very important indicator of herteam’s success.
“We have to hit our open 10 to 15 footlooks. If we can shoot around 40 percentand take care of the ball, we’ll be competi-tive in every game we play.” she said.
The second-year head coach thinksFairview is the outright favorite, but thefield is balanced after that.
“It’s really going to be a battle at dis-tricts. Whoever plays the hardest for 32minutes is going to come out with a spot atthe divisional tournament,” Bernstonsaid.

Newly formed Fusion ready to make tourney runA new co-op has begun in the 2009-2010
season in District 2-C girls basketball asthe Lambert and Richey schools haveformed the R&L Fusion. The Fusion arelooking to make its first post-season expe-rience a positive one with a trip to the di-visional tournament.
“We have a very good group of girlsthat work hard and play well together. They are really getting used to playingwith each other and are excited abouthaving a good district tournament,” Fu-sion coach Kara Watson said.
The Fusion comes into districts as thesixth seed with a record of 8-10. “I thinkwe have started to really gel as the seasonhas gone on. The girls are becoming morecomfortable all the time, and that is verynice to see going into the tournament,”Watson said.
R&L is a fairly young squad with justone senior, but the Fusion do have somenice experience on its side. Junior All-Conference performer Jennifer Trotteralong with senior guard Anna Prevostand junior forward Jamie Rosaaen are allreturning starters.
Juniors Laken Olson and LindsayZuroff along with sophomore SaraJensen played varsity minutes last sea-son. Freshman post player Alexis John-son has stepped into the starting line-upwhile freshman guard Jessica Williamsprovides a boost off the bench.
“This is a group of girls that is verycoachable and seem to really love thegame. We are really excited for this sea-son and the future,” Watson said. “Wehave our sights set on the divisional tour-nament.”
Watson feels her team has improved itsball handling as the season has went on.“Early in the season, turnovers reallygave us some problems. As the year haswent on, we’ve been able to limit our un-forced turnovers,” she said. “Ball han-dling will be a big factor in this tourna-ment.”
The Fusion come into the tourney asthe sixth seed and with a record of 8-10.R&L is set to play the third-seeded CircleWildcats in the opening round at dis-tricts. The two teams split during the sea-son.
“We know Circle has a lot of quicknessand a really solid defense so it’s going tobe important to control the pace of thegame,” Watson said. “We are going toneed to focus on ball handling and giveourselves as many scoring opportunitiesas possible.”
Watson expects a very hard-fought, funtournament. “It’s going to be one of themore exciting tournaments in a while. There are going to be a lot of good match-ups,” she said.

Savage squad working hard to earn divisional berthBY HARRY LIPSIEASIDNEY HERALD
Losing just one player off of last year’steam, the Savage girls basketball team hasplenty of experience under its belt goinginto the district tournament.
“We have a good group of athletes,”Staci Lange-Rice, who is the team’s sixthnew head coach in six years, said. “Theyhave really improved as the season hascome along. We’ve really gotten better atsome basic things that need to be mas-tered if you’re going to be a good basket-ball team.”
The Warriors, who come into the tour-nament as the fifth seed and with a recordof 10-8, feature a good balance of outsideand inside players. One of the majorstrengths of the team is its depth.
“While we don’t have a lot of girls, allnine of our girls have seen a lot of playingtime this season. I think it’s very impor-tant that if someone needs a break we canreplace them and not lose anything,”Lange-Rice said.
Senior guards Stephanie Nollmeyer andLaToya Neiffer are a pair of returning All-Conference players for the Warriors.
Sophomores Bridger Rice, BrittanySmith and Hanna Jepsen give Savageheight and athleticism while junior Pay-ton Phillippi and senior Casie Ler arestrong rebounders inside. Junior guardAndria Mastvelten is a strong ball han-dler.m
The Warriors will have a 10th playerduring districts with German foreign ex-change student Sandra Mecklenburg.
“It’s going to be really nice to have a 10thplayer during the tournament. It’s helpedhaving that extra body during practice. She’s a good kid,” Lange-Rice said.
Lange-Rice thinks her team’s ability toplay together has been an asset to herteam this season.
“I have been very impressed with the
girl’s teamwork this season. That is whyour team is so balanced. The girls pass theball to the open player and that has helpedus a lot,” she said. “We’ve really come to-gether as a team this season, and that’s allyou can ask out of your players.”
The field is very tight, Lange-Rice said.“We play in a real strong district. Thereare just a lot of real good teams,” she said.
“It’s going to make for a very balancedtournament. There are going to be six orseven teams fighting for four spots at divi-sionals.”
The Warriors match up with Grenora-Westby in the first round of the districttourney. The two teams split in the regularseason. The Gophers feature one of theleague’s top players in senior guardSamantha Olson.
“She’s quite a player. She can shoot, shecan penetrate, and she’s a very good pass-er. It’s going to be important to shut herdown. It’s going to be a very competitivegame,” Lange Rice said.
The Warriors are hoping to accomplishone of their goals by advancing to divi-sionals.
“At the beginning of the season, wewanted to see how much we could accom-plish together and develop team unity,”Lange-Rice said. “We need to play withconfidence and strive to get as far as wecan.”
Good luck to all district teams and fans!Everyone is welcome at the Cattle• ac.

Grenora-Westby is a new addition toDistrict 2-C girls basketball. The Go-phers, who have competed in NorthDakota since the two schools began aco-op several years ago, are looking tomake a run in the district tourney intodivisionals.
The fourth-seeded Gophers have anice combination of experience andyoung talent. Seniors Samantha Olson,Michala Kueffler and Hallie Westgardgive Grenora-Westby a solid, seasonedgroup of upperclassmen. Sophomoreforward Jonni Muller has played varsi-ty minutes since her seventh-gradeseason and has the ability to play in-side or outside.
“Those four players give us a very ex-perienced group of core players. Evenwith three seniors, we are a fairlyyoung team as we have no juniors andjust two sophomores,” coach RandyNordhagen said.
Four freshmen have seen extensiveplaying time this season. MaKenzieWestgard is Grenora-Westby’s startingcenter while MaKayla Westgard, KoriGunlickson and Kayla Rust provideminutes off the bench for the Gophers.
“We have a talented group of fresh-men with a lot of athletic ability, butthe hard part is getting them varsityexperience. They have continued to im-prove as the season has come along,”he said.
The Gophers started off the seasonfairly well with wins over Froid-Lake
and Savage, but injuries and time offcaused some problems in January.
“We were playing well going into theholiday break, but we had a couple ofgames that we just didn’t play as wellas we’re capable of. Now, the girlsseemed to be finding their groove, andhopefully we can play our best basket-ball at districts,” he said.
Grenora-Westby has a quick, athleticteam that likes to run the court. TheGophers rely on pressure defense andgood passing to get points in transi-tion.
“We like to get up and down thecourt, but lately we haven’t been ableto finish as well as we are capable of. Ifwe can hit our open looks, we’ll befine,” Nordhagen said.
Nordhagen thinks Fairview is the fa-vorite in the District 2-C field, but ex-pects the rest of the teams to be in abattle for the final three spots.
“There are five or six teams that arereally going to be in a fight to make di-visionals. I think we’re in the mix. Ijust think it’s going to depend on whois peaking at tournament time,” he
