Introduction

According to the project proposal, THEWS partners started since the beginning of the project the

dissemination of all project activities. In the beginning of the project in 2014 partners informed

potential beneficiaries on the THEWS methodology and when the electronic platform was developed

THEWS partners were engaged in a number of activities to fully disseminate the Exercise to the public

and especially the main target groups, the business executives (office employees) and the exercise

specialists, clinical experts and students of Physical Education and Sports. By the end of the project all

dissemination targets have been reached and in addition a future exploitation plan has been

established.

Types of Activities

These are the types of dissemination activities organized during the THEWS project in order to inform

the companies and the general public on the Therapeutic exercise in the work place.

1. Companies visits and presentations

2. Presentations in the University - Lectures

3. Meetings with associations, federations of companies, Organizations etc

4. Mass media presentations (magazine, radio etc)

5. Direct mailing

Dissemination tools

In the beginning of the project a specific logo was adopted by all partners in project activities and

dissemination e.g. project leaflet for recruitment of enterprises willing to incorporate THEWS in their

social corporate responsibility program. Appendix 1. logo THEWS.jpg

In addition, in the framework of Output 9 of the project a leaflet was developed which was distributed

in the final Dissemination events in May 2016 (Congress in Komotini and Info Day in Athens). The leaflet

was developed by the project coordinator DUTH in collaboration with ALBA Graduate Business School

which provided the specifications, the outline and the format that would be more attractive to the

business executives. 5000 copies were printed in total. 4000 copies were distributed at the Information

Day in Athens and 1000 copies were distributed to the 24th Congress of Sports and Physical Education.

Appendix 8

DUTH in collaboration with ALBA Graduate Business School developed a fun page at social media

(Facebook) on 11th of February 2016 (facebook group page https://www.facebook.com/Therapeutic-

Exercise-at-workspace-THEWS-1740090579537217/). In this group page all news, events, articles,

photos and videos of the project has been uploaded and communicated to the public. Currently the

group has 197 followers (mostly from Greece and Cyprus as well as Norway). According to the statistics

of the page, the last 28 days, the group page reached 4324 people (appeared at their timeline), while

531 times viewers played the uploaded videos of the Info Day in Athens where the Therapeutic Exercise

was demonstrated. The top post of the page had more than 1000 views and the top activities (views

of posts) were the last week of May when the major dissemination event took place in Athens.

DUTH in collaboration with Instituto PEDRO NUNES created a website where also the electronic

platform with the Therapeutic exercise is also included. http://thews-platform.eu/. The electronic

platform has already 124 login users (16/06/2016) who have accessed the different pages more than

one time (same user visiting the exercises more than one time). These are the google analytics statistics

of the platform pages since 16/6/2016:

ALBA and DUTH developed a press release to be announced after the Info Day in Athens 2016 in

order to inform the public on the electronic platform of THEWS. The Press Release was sent by the

Marketing and Communication Department of ALBA to a list of 270 mass media journalists at 78

media (news portals, magazines, newspapers, TV channels, Radio stations etc). Appendix 7, 16

Most of the meetings were organized after the mass dissemination of THEWS to the Greek businesses

with the organization of the main Information DAY of THEWS in Athens on 24th of May 2016. The event

was organized by ALBA Graduate Business School and took place at ALBA campus at Xenias street

Athens downtown. The event agenda and invitation (see below) was developed in collaboration with

DUTH. ALBA invited 1527 personal invitations to HR Managers and Top managers to participate (ALBA

database). The ALBA database is a dynamic list of updated contacts since it is updated daily by all ALBA

employees who are in touch with the Greek Business Community. In addition an event at Facebook

was developed https://www.facebook.com/events/1530324343942345/ in order to invite more

people through our personal networks. Two separate reminder e-mails were sent in a period of one

month in order to ensure the participation of maximum number of companies. A Livemedia streaming

company sponsored the live streaming of the event which enabled us to reach a larger number of

Page 5: Dissemination Report.pdf

Info Day Agenda

The event was a great success since 104 HR and top Managers participated at the event on 24th of May.

Appendix 9. Participants at ALBA plus live streaming viewers reached the 206 participants in total. The

group consisted of HR Managers from all industry sectors (all major Greek Banks, Multinational Greek

companies, Manufacturing, telecommunications, pharmaceutical, Call centers etc). All participants had

the chance to see the demonstration of some of the exercises which are included in the electronic

platform and learnt how to access the platform itself. Dr. Baliarakos and Ms. Kourounakou presented

the benefits of Therapeutic Exercise in the workplace as well as the needs of the office employees and

Ms. Beneka presented the methodology behind THEWS. Stress Management techniques were also

presented by Ms. Grønningsæter. As a guest presenter Ms. Koukoulaki from ΕΛΙΝΥΑΕ presented the

priorities for Health, Wellness and Safety in the Greek Business Community. The Vice president of

Ε Ι ΑΕ and Director of Federation of Greek Industries Ms. Bardani also endorsed the event. 2000

Leaflets were distributed to the HR and top Managers on site. Each participants took a balk of leaflets

in order to distribute them to the employees back at their office. The event concluded with a

networking cocktail (healthy lemon juice and finger food were served) were the companies had the

chance to speak with the THEWS partners and especially with the training experts from DUTH. That

was a great opportunity for the companies to arrange individual meetings with DUTH professors for

exploring more the THEWS in the future. Except for the meetings aforementioned, there was an

intense expression of interest from the companies to contact the professors and to further explore the

possibility of inviting trainers in the workspace to perform the exercises in the office to all company

employees. Companies such as Qualco SA contacted us after the end of the event to ask for details to

join the platform and how to communicate it to their employees. Appendix 10

Direct Mailing

The best way to inform office employees about the THEWS exercise is by reaching out to them via

direct e-mails. For that purpose:

1. University of Nicosia sent an e-mail to approximately 100 Physiotherapists which assess office

ergonomics and they might want to advertise the platform to patients and office employees

in Cyprus.

2. At University College of Southeast Norway 1500 e-mails were sent to all employees on

01.03.2016 in order to participate at THEWS pilot. 50 respondents took part in THEWS pilot

project for 6 weeks.

3. ALBA Graduate Business School sent two direct e-mails in Spring 2016. One Direct mass mail

for inviting HR executives and GMs to the Information Day in Athens (1527 personal e-mail to

HR and top managers – 2 reminders in May 2016 – 3 e-mails in total) and one e-mail to inform

HR Managers on the electronic platform (993 HR Executives personal e-mails) beginning of

June 2016 a few days after the Information Day.

Page 12: Dissemination Report.pdf

EN Page 12 of 28

Future Dissemination Activities The Information Day in Athens was the starting point to access the Greek companies. The participating

companies will contact DUTH professors in the future to arrange training exercise/sessions in the

workplace. Some specific activities have already been planned such as:

1. eeting with s. Marina Gryllaki 01/06/16, at ALBA Executive Development Programs

Department in order to incorporate THEWS in an open seminar on Positivity in the Workplace.

There will be a potential collaboration of the two schools in order to exploit THEWS in the

future after the end of the project. Executive seminars of ALBA Graduate Business School are

currently the top executive development seminars in Greece attracting a vast number of

employees (more than 1000 seminar participants from top companies). THEWS can be

incorporated in ALBA seminars. Currently ALBA in collaboration with Prof. Beneka designs a

new seminar for the companies.

2. ΕΛΙΝΥΑΕ will host THEWS at their annual Conference in 2017. There are many synergies and

Ε Ι ΑΕ wants to promote the platform as well as the training exercise at a vast number of

Greek companies. E Ι ΑΕ participated and promoted their activities at ALBA Info Day on 24th

of May.

3. At University College of Southeast Norway a planned presentation session will take place in

autumn 2016. Expected number of employees participants is 100.

4. The New CSR Organization at University of Nicosia will act as a multiplier effect to contact

more companies in Cyprus and inform them about the benefits of Therapeutic Exercises.

Problems concerning health and well‐being are among the top challenges presented in the

workplace today worldwide. Since 2005, the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for

Europe and  the European Commission have both  recognized  the  importance of well‐being and

prevention at the workplace. The World Health Organization has defined a work‐related disorder

as  one  that  results  from  a  number  of  factors,  and  where  the  work  environment  and  the

performance of  the work contribute significantly, but  in varying magnitude,  to  the causation of

the disease (WHO, 2012).

Musculoskeletal disorders

Musculoskeletal disorders  (MSDs)  such as neck/back pain or upper  limb disorders  remain

the most common occupational diseases  in  the European Union and workers  in all  sectors and

occupations  are  affected. They  are  also  an  increasing problem  and one of  the most  important

causes of  long‐term  sickness absence. Beside  the effects on workers  themselves, MSDs  lead  to

higher healthcare costs to enterprises and the society as a whole. Even if it is well known, the risks

continue.

According  to  the  latest  figures  of  the  European  Survey  on Working  Conditions  (ESWC),

24.7% of the European workers complain of backache, 22.8% of muscular pains, and 45.5% report

working  in painful or tiring positions. The Survey concluded that every year millions of European

workers in all types of jobs and employment sectors are affected by MSDs through their work. The

end result can even be permanent disability, with the loss of employment. (European Agency for

Safety  and  Health  at Work,  2010).  Specifically,  about  47%  of  Greek workers  report  backache

according  to  the ESWC 2005, and about 45.7%  report muscular pain.  In 2001,  in  the Candidate

Countries Survey, about 27% of Cypriot workers  reported muscular pain  in shoulders and neck.

(ESWC, 2005).  In Germany, one quarter of  the working days  lost are due  to MSDs such as neck

pain with an economic impact estimated to represent 0,4% in productivity loss (SUGA, 2006).

This health problem therefore is related with high socioeconomic consequences in terms of

health expenses and  lost working days. While sitting, office workers, tend to  lean forward or to

slouch  down  in  the  chair.  This  partial  immobilization  can  cause  low  back  pain  or  neck  pain

because static posture increases stress on the back, neck, shoulders, arms and legs. In particular,

sitting can add large amounts of pressure to the back muscles, spinal discs and ligaments (Beneka

et al., 2014). Over time, incorrect sitting posture can damage spinal structures and contribute to

or worsen back and neck pain  (Bernard, 1997). Chronic or  recurrent neck pain can be  severely

devastating  and  can  also  be  accompanied  by  upper  back  pain,  shoulder  and  scapula  pain  and

headaches. These  symptoms, along with  tight neck muscles and  stiff  joints  can make even  the

simplest  daily  activity  painful  for  the  office  worker.  Therefore,  strength  and  conditioning

professionals, athletic  trainers, and physical  therapists often  come across ongoing or  recurrent

complaints of neck pain. While the etiology of musculoskeletal pain symptoms  is multi‐factorial,

there is a general consensus about the beneficial effect of therapeutic exercise.

Therapeutic Exercise at Workspace

The  Therapeutic  Exercise  at Workspace  project  (THEWS, word  that means  also  'muscles'

and  'power')  is designed  to develop a new  learning program  for exercise and health experts,  to

grow  their  competences  and become more European  in  their methodology of addressing neck

pain  issue of office  employees  in  the workplace.  THEWS project  addresses  the  gap  in  learning

programs  jointly  developed  and  delivered  by  HEI’s  exercise  and  health  experts  with  both

educational  and  clinical expertise  in  collaboration with medical experts. This  is  a program  that

responds directly to the objectives of the Europe 2020 Strategy about the need for employment

of graduate young people  in a percentage of 82% three years after graduation. The main goal of

the  partnership  addresses  the  need  to  develop  a  new  intensive  learning  program  (focused  on

transforming  ‘ideas  into  action’  in  line with  Europe  2020  recommendations)  for  exercise  and

health  specialists,  which  acts  as  a  catalyst  for  their  own  professional  development.  THEWS

benefits the target groups by: supporting  innovation  in exercise  in the workplace for enterprises

across Europe through a. development   and  implementation   of a therapeutic exercise program

which  is easy  to apply  in  the workspace enhancing well‐being and productivity at work  (target

group  enterprises)  b.  customized  IT  application  connecting  symptoms with  exercise  (for  office

employees target group); giving rise to innovative curriculum and methodology developments for

HEI on  therapeutic exercise courses  (HEI  students of exercise and  rehabilitation groups); and c.

providing  transfer  of    practical  knowledge  and  skills  into  Design  of  exercise  programs  in  the

workplace (exercise and rehabilitation expert‐ trainers target group).

Physical  exercise  is  a  cornerstone  in  health  and  wellbeing  as  an  increasing  number  of

studies  and  reviews within  the  last  decade  provide  evidence  for  the  effectiveness  of  physical

exercise  in managing musculoskeletal pain at  the workplace. While  specific  strength  training of

the neck  and  shoulders  is  the most promising  type of physical  exercise  for  relieving neck pain

(Blangsted et al, 2008, Andersen et al, 2008), a science‐based design  is  lacking for  implementing

such therapeutic exercise    in the workplace. This project  is complementary to recent research  in

the workspace in terms of a postgraduate thesis (Geronteli, Beneka, Malliou, 2013) examining the

effectiveness of a  recreational exercise program  in addressing pain  in office employees. Even  if

this  program was  designed  primary  for  recreational  reasons  and was  not  addressing  incorrect

sitting posture  and head position  it proved  effective  in  alleviating pain. Moreover,  an  exercise

program meant for the Workplace (ACSM'S Health & Fitness Journal) was described by Beneka et

al,  (2014)   and suggested  that head repositioning and appropriate sitting position are critical  to

prevent and  manage the symptoms of chronic neck pain.

Describing  the  problem,  office  workers  with  neck  pain  usually  exhibit  altered  postural

behaviors  such  as  drift  in  and  out  of  scapular  protraction  associated  with  different  muscle

activation  in  the  trapezius  band,  producing  mechanical  stresses  and  pain  on  sensitive

cervicobrachial structures (Wegner et al, 2010). Dealing with the problem, it has been confirmed

that exercises  involving  repeated  specific  contraction of  craniocervical musculature and precise

movement relocation practice alleviated neck pain in chronic neck pain patients (Jull et al, 2007).

Moreover, it is well established that the head repositioning in a neutral position is the only way to

control this excessive and prolonged muscle activity of the head’s deep  flexors or correct those

inappropriate  postural  behaviors  previously  mentioned.  It  is  questionable  though,  if  simple

exercise  tips  can  address  effectively  the multidimensional  pain  profile  that  office  employees

present.  It  seems  though  that  in  order  to manage  and  alleviate  efficiently  neck  pain  in  office

employees  it  is  needed  to  design  a  therapeutic  exercise  program  containing  a  sequence  of

exercises  addressing  all  previously mentioned  problems  and  derived  from  the  collaboration  of

physicians,  exercise  and  rehabilitation  experts  (physical  or  occupational  therapists).  Office

employees  will  incorporate  this  program  into  their  daily  lives  if  it  is  easy  to  apply  in  their

workplace even with their work clothes on.

Therefore, a therapeutic exercise at work space (target group office employees) contains an

appropriate  exercise  program  addressing  neck  pain  symptoms  that  is  easy  to  apply  in  the

workplace by office workers even wearing a tie, without any specific equipment. The  innovation

of this protocol  is that  is meant  to address all previously mentioned problems altogether and  it

will be composed of diverse exercises  that have been proven  to be efficient  in controlling neck

pain symptoms by previous studies (Andersen et al, 2008; Rota et al, 2011). Moreover the project

will  provide  the  employees  an  innovative  IT  application  (multimedia  application)  which  will

provide  guidance    on  the  appropriate  exercise  during  their  daily  work  for  prevention      and

management  of  neck  pain.  Setting  the  specific  points  and  characteristics  of  pain,  any  office

employee will  have  its  own  appropriate  sequence  of  exercises.  Even  if  there  is  a  plethora  of

software applications and  simple exercise  tips  for desk workers available  in  the  Internet,  these

approaches are simply aimed to give a temporary pain relief and not to successfully address the

main causes of pain arising from  incorrect posture while working. In addition they merely  list all

NECK PAIN: A THERAPEUTIC EXERCISE AT WORKSPACE

Abstract

Musculoskeletal disorders  (MSDs) such as neck/back pain or upper  limb disorders remain the most common  occupational  diseases  in  the  European  Union  and workers  in  all  sectors  and  occupations  are affected. They are also an increasing problem and one of the most important causes of long‐term sickness absence. Chronic or recurrent neck pain can be severely devastating and can also be accompanied by upper back pain, shoulder and scapula pain and headaches. These symptoms, along with tight neck muscles and stiff  joints can make even the simplest daily activity painful for the office worker. Therefore, strength and conditioning professionals, athletic trainers, and physical therapists often come across ongoing or recurrent complaints of neck pain. While the etiology of musculoskeletal pain symptoms is multi‐factorial, there is a general  consensus  about  the beneficial  effect of  therapeutic  exercise.  The proposed protocol has  to be based  on  a  specific  knowledge  that  includes: Neck  pain: Diagnosis,  symptoms  and  treatment methods, therapeutic  exercise  protocols  for  prevention  and  rehabilitation  of  neck  pain  in  order  to  design  and  to implement and to intervent techniques for addressing pain at the workspace.

Key words: Neck pain, EU, therapeutic exercise, workspace.

THEWS: its expected impact on the participants, participating organisations, target groups

and other relevant stakeholders

Description of THEWS Strategic Partnership

The University partners, Democritus University of Thrace  (DUTH, EL), University of Nicosia

(EDEX,  CY),  and  Hogskolen  of  Buskerud  &  Vestfold  (HBV,  NOR),  with  partners  the  Center  of

Orthopaedics  &  Traumatology,  St  Anna  Hospital  (GER),  the  ALBA  College  of  Business

Administration  (ALBA,  EL)  and  the  Institute  Pedro  Nunes  (IPN,  POR)  recognize  the  need  to

“strengthen  the  cooperation  between  the  world  of  education  and  the  workplace”,  and  to

“educate exercise specialists of  tomorrow who will act as agents of  improving well‐being  in  the

demanding environment of the business world”. All partners share skills in pedagogy and process

to  develop  individuals  to  become  highly‐competent  professionals,  fully  aware  of  their  social

responsibility, promoting education and research with critical analysis and academic excellence.

The  partnership  has  been  specifically  chosen  because  it  integrates  the  medical  experts  with

academia,  ICT experts and business  in a dual goal –  that of  tackling unemployment and  that of

developing synergies between education staff and business    in the creation of a new curriculum

and THEWS protocol for enhancing well‐being in the work space.  This is very much the mission of

the development of THEWS project, where participants will undertake an action learning process

which is a form of co‐collaboration.

THEWS desired impact on enterprises (office employees and CSR‐HR members)

and rehabilitation experts

THEWS  project  is  expected  to  have  a  long  lasting  impact  on  the wide  dissemination  of

THEWS protocol and  its  integration to office employees’ everyday  lives. Rising awareness of CSR

and HR members on that serious musculoskeletal disorder and  its socioeconomic consequences,

the project expects to minimize absenteeism from work and reduce health expenses for therapy.

Educating office employees  in  implementing THEWS protocol at work, the project aims to  instill

them that a healthier option is the easier option while preventing and addressing one of the most

frequent musculoskeletal problems related to loss of working days.  According to Bernard (1997),

it  is difficult  to assess and  compare  the  true extent of MSDs  (Musculoskeletal disorders’)  costs

within the workplace across Member States. The same report mentions nevertheless that certain

studies have estimated the cost of work‐related upper‐limb musculoskeletal disorders (WRULD) at

between  0.5%  and  2%  of  Gross  National  Product  (GNP).  Implementing  a  large  number  of

diversified  dissemination  activities  (web‐platform,  e‐Newsletter,  info‐days,  training  sessions,

strategy as it is suggested by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (European Risk

Observatory Report, Luxembourg, 2010).

The Web‐Platform will also encourage staff (educators, trainers) from outside core project

staff to get involved in the THEWS online communities to learn about the new methodology and

approach for treating neck pain in the workplace and to network with rehabilitation professionals

across Europe.  In  this way  it ensures  also effective dissemination of THEWS outputs  in  a wide

range  of  stakeholders  such  as:  exercise  and  rehabilitation  experts  and  students,  the  business

community  and  also  policy makers  (at  regional,  national  and  European  level  e.g.  Chamber  of

Commerce and Industry, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Culture and Sports,

WHO etc).

Overall, more than 1.300 people will participate in THEWS events (estimation: 60% exercise,

health and rehabilitation experts, 20% from enterprises, 10% policy and decision makers and 10%

other),  10.000 users  are  expected  to  visit  the project web‐platform, be  informed or use  its  e‐

functionalities, about 1.000  industrial/factory, organizations/associations and enterprises will be

directly contacted by the project partners, the training modules will be used by more than 1.000

students, 1.000 office employees will be  registered  in  the web‐platform  to use  the multimedia

application and  follow  the exercise program, 5.000 exercise and  rehabilitation experts  (physical

education, physical therapy and occupational therapy graduates) will download the  instructional

videos, while almost 2000 students of Physical Education and Sports will download the  learning

material developed during the project.

Specifically during the activities of the project:

A  total  of  6  therapeutic  exercise  specialists  (6  exercise  experts  ‐2  physical  therapists

among them) 2 physicians (across GER, EL, NOR and CY) with impacts on each individual learner,

two non‐profit organizations with impact on enterprises/policy makers and on innovative IT . The

project  contributes  to  co‐operation  within  and  between  a  variety  of  professionals  (physical

therapists, physicians and exercise experts) connecting practices from different thematic areas to

impact diffusion at workplaces.

The  joint curriculum program that will be developed and piloted will be  incorporated to

the  existent  curriculum  of  three  HEIs  in  three  different  countries,  with  calculated  ECTS  as  a

grading scale.

The 30  learners  in  the Pilot of  the curriculum  (ISP and  long‐term distance  teaching)  (10

students  for  each partner organization will  impact on others  via  a  cascade  effect of  spreading

knowledge gained  through  the program.  In  this way  there will be a positive  impact on exercise

specialists employment in the participating enterprises and thus employment across the EU.

Similarly, 200 office workers who will use the multimedia application will impact on their

colleagues (indirect target group) spreading education and well‐being gained through their short

participation in the program.

HR members and Corporate Social Responsibility of 100 enterprises from the public sector

will  acknowledge  that  the  healthier  option  is  the  easier  option  through  the  Information  Day

(Dissemination). A well  informed public opinion  in combination with the provision of condensed

and easily accessible  information  for all kinds of audiences would  lower health costs and  foster

productivity and work  satisfaction among office employees. Easy public access will bring also a

wide  collection of  ‘popularized’  therapeutic  exercise  information  closer  to  information  seekers

(neck  pain  patients  office  employees),  while  the  wide  dissemination  of  THEWS  results  will

contribute towards  an increased understanding of the THEWS program potential.

Desired Impact of the Project on HEI (Higher Education Institutions) and unemployed exercise

and health experts

By  developing  a  partnership  of  EU  HE  institutions  of  exercise  and  health  with medical

experts and enterprises, partnership  is dedicated  in developing  innovation and skills  in students

and  unemployed  exercise  and  rehabilitation  experts.  The  development  of  THEWS  project

promotes  cooperation  and  partnerships  that  have  an  impact  on  the  modernization  and

internationalization of higher education  institutions and systems  in  line with  the Objectives and

Priorities of the Strategic Partnerships.

Moreover  through  the  THEWS  project,  there will  also  be  a  development  of  a  European

community in the methodology of active health promotion in the workplace. Both partners in this

project and learners will be encouraged to associate themselves with the THEWS community. The

community  will  be  able  to  share  ideas,  learning,  professional  challenges,  and  to  develop

transferable skills  (including basic  language skills when cross‐European partners    interact  ) –  i.e.

they will be able  to apply  the  same methods  in principle  to other musculoskeletal disorders at

work.  They  are  themselves  the  potential  agents  of health  promotion  in  the workplace  though

action across Europe.

Finally, The Therapeutic Exercise at Workspace project  (THEWS)  is designed  to develop a

new  learning program  for exercise and health experts,  to grow  their competences and become

more European  in  their methodology of  addressing neck pain  issue of office employees  in  the

workplace.  THEWS  project  addresses  the  gap  in  learning  programs  jointly  developed  and

delivered  by  HEI’s  exercise  and  health  experts  in  collaboration  with medical  experts  and  ICT

experts  with  both  educational  expertise  and  practical  knowledge.  In  line  with  the  Europe's

Modernization Agenda  for Higher Education,  "strengthening quality  through mobility and  cross

border  co‐operation  and  building  mobility  more  systematically  into  curricula"  is  the  desired

impact  of  the  project  in  European  level.  "Linking  higher  education,  research  and  business  for

excellence and regional development" as the Agenda suggests will be enhanced with this project

that promotes effective  links between education,  research and business,  the  three  sides of  the

"knowledge triangle".

Desired impact of the project at the local, regional, national,

European and/or international level

Concerning  the  impact  in  national  level,  common  goal  of  all  these  professionals  is  to

improve the following situation described with statistics for three different countries participating

in the project:

About 22,8% of European workers  consider  that  their work affects  their health  reporting

muscular pains in shoulders, neck and/or upper/lower limbs. In both the EU and the accepted or

candidate  countries,  about  23%  of  the  workers  reported  neck  and  shoulder  pains  in  2000.

Specifically,  in the Candidate Countries Survey, about 27% of Cypriot workers reported muscular

pain  in  shoulders  and neck.  (ESWC, 2005). Data  from  the  Fourth European  Survey on Working

Conditions  (ESWC)  revealed  that almost one quarter  (23.6%) of German workers  feel  that work

affects their health. As far as MSDs are concerned, almost one fifth of surveyed workers (18.8%)

report  suffering  from  backache  while  14.8%  complain  of  muscular  pain.  In  2000,  women

complained more about pain in neck and shoulder. According to the SUGA 50 reports, the annual

national reports on safety and health at Work  in Germany, the highest number of working days

lost are due to musculoskeletal disorders: 23.7% in 2006. Hence, MSDs caused nearly a quarter of

all days lost. This had an economic impact which was estimated to represent 0.4% in productivity

loss and MSDs represent the highest percentage share of productivity loss among all occupational

diseases. About 47% of Greek workers report backache according to the ESWC 2005, and about

45.7%  report muscular  pain.  Unfortunately  there  are  no  statistics  for MSDs  by  sector  in  the

country. The only  specific data  (however only  for  some  sectors or  sub‐sectors)  come  from  the

Hellenic Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (ELINYAE), which has conducted a number of

sectional surveys.

Abstract

Therapeutic Exercise at Workspace (THEWS) as a European project is a Strategic Partnership that has come  together because of  the  common purpose and belief  that health promotion and well‐being  in  the workplace is one of the most pressing problems facing European economies. The common goal and vision amongst the partnership members is that, there needs to be a learning program (focused on transforming ‘ideas into action’ in line with Europe 2020 recommendations) for exercise and health specialists, which will act as a catalyst for their own professional development and that will enhance well‐being and quality of life in  the Work  Space.  In  this  article,  is  described  the  desired  impact  of  the  project  on  the  participants, participating organisations,  target groups and other  relevant stakeholders at  the  local,  regional, national, European and/or international level.

Dear Zoe,

I would like to congratulate you for organizing such an interesting event!

THEWS appears to be a very helpful tool for the wellbeing of the employees and indeed, the case built for its use is very strong.

Is there a possibility you could provide me with the presentations for future reference?

Kind Regards,

Αγγελική Μαντζούνη / Angeliki Mantzouni

Erasmus+ seminar onsdag 22. oktober 2014

A. Fremtidens miljøløsninger B Fremtidens helsetjenester/helseteknologi

C. Undervisning for fremtidens arbeidslivsbehov

Parallelle workshops

A. Fremtidens miljøløsninger: Ordstyrer Eivind Hodne Steen, EU-rådgiver ved Osloregionens Europakontor

B. Fremtidens helsetjenester/helseteknologi:

Page 74: Dissemination Report.pdf

Innledere: Egil Utheim, Innovation Advisor, Oslo Medtech

Professor Kristi-Iren Skovdahl, Fakultet for helsevitenskap, Institutt for

sykepleiervitenskap, Høgskolen i Buskerud og

rofessor

C. Undervisning for fremtidens arbeidslivsbehov:
