Throughout 2001, we have celebrated 100 Years of Magic in recognition of thebirth of Walt Disney. As we reflect on Walt’s legacy and his amazing ability to inspirecreativity, we recall the environmental ethic he developed within the Company.Through educational programs and personal example, Walt stressed the need to beaware of the critical balance between nature and mankind. Demonstrating hisenvironmental insight, he once stated the following:

“You’ve probably heard people talk about conservation. Well, conservation isn’t justthe business of a few people. It’s a matter that concerns all of us. It's a science whoseprinciples are written in the oldest code in the world, the laws of nature. The naturalresources of our vast continent are not inexhaustible. But if we will use our richeswisely, if we will protect our wildlife and preserve our lakes and streams, thesethings will last us for generations to come.”

Walt’s vision of combining environmental stewardship with his quest for qualityentertainment and profitable growth was realized most dramatically through thedevelopment of the Walt Disney World Resort. This work in progress is a shiningexample of a corporation’s ability to combine business acumen with strongenvironmental ethics. The impact of Walt’s concern for the environment didn’tstop with Walt Disney World; his desire to protect our resources is evidenced inevery facet of our complex organization. For example, consider the following:

Jiminy Cricket’s Environmentality Challenge has touched more than 390,000students in California and Florida.In 2001, Earth Month VoluntEAR projects contributed more than 4,500 hoursto the community.Since 1990, the Walt Disney World Resort has implemented energy conserva-tion initiatives resulting in annual savings of more than $5 million.The Walt Disney Company has recycled more than 551,000 tons of materialsin 10 years.Since 1993, The Walt Disney Company has received more than 50 awards inrecognition of environmental contributions.The Company’s commuter assistance programs save more than 500,000 automobile trips and 225,000 pounds of pollution annually.*

Donations & ReuseEnvironmentality can have a dramatic affect on acompany’s bottom line. In the year 2000, forexample, Disney avoided more than $23,000 indisposal charges by diverting nearly 500,000 poundsof materials from the landfill.

Through donation, reuse, and recycling programs, aFeature Animation warehouse team diverted nearly85% of their obsolete items from the landfill. Theseitems, with a combined weight of 88,000 pounds,included computers, metals, industrial tile, andelectronics. In addition, a nonprofit clearing housefor school and office supply donations coordinateda monthly pickup from the Studio Warehouse, allow-ing the Company to avoid sending even more itemsto the landfill while benefiting area schools.

The El Capitan Theatre, built in 1926, is a moviepalace located in the heart of Hollywood. Exqui-sitely restored, the theatre seats more than 1,000guests and is home to many of Disney’s spectacu-lar movie premieres, including Toy Story; Tarzan;Dinosaur; Monsters, Inc.; and Disney’s Atlantis.

In May 2000, the El Capitan team was negotiatinga new waste hauling contract that would alsoincluded recycling. Faced with the challenge of shortturnaround times between shows, Cast Memberswere not able to pre-sort recyclables from the trash.Through research, the El Capitan team found a localwaste hauler with the capability to sort and separaterecyclable materials from trash at their MaterialsRecovery Facility (MRF).

While most MRFs recover traditional recyclablessuch as office paper, cardboard, and beveragecontainers, the El Capitan Theatre’s waste streamalso includes paper popcorn bags, paperboard foodand drink trays, candy wrappers, and popcorn.Fortunately, the waste hauler had a compost facil-ity that allowed them to recover many of theseitems. Since the program’s inception in May 2000,the El Capitan team has recycled more than 46,000pounds of material, diverting approximately 17% ofthe monthly waste to composting.

Cast Members at the El Capitan Theatre weresuccessful in other areas of recycling, as well. Forexample, obsolete ticket stock is now collected anddiscarded into shredding containers to be recycledwith other paper material. The team also divertednearly 2,000 pounds of unused plastic cups andpopcorn buckets from the landfill by donating themto various children’s events.

To celebrate Earth Day 2001 and to increase aware-ness about El Capitan Theatre’s waste minimiza-tion efforts, unique window clings were designed tocommunicate “We Recycle Here” and “We’ve GotEnvironmentality.” These are now proudly dis-played at the entrance doors.

Energy conservation is another important compo-nent of minimizing waste, and El Capitan is acharter member of the Green Power Program,sponsored by the Los Angeles Department of Waterand Power. Through this program, a percentage ofthe theatre’s electricity is generated from renewableresources.

The El Capitan team successfully enhanced wasteminimization efforts this year, earning a CaliforniaEPA WasteWise Program Champion Award and aCalifornia Integrated Waste Management BoardWRAP (Waste Reduction Awards Program) Award.

Clean Air Car LoanIn an effort to encourage Cast Members and employeesto consider purchasing alternative fuel vehicles, TheWalt Disney Company Environmental Policy Depart-ment, Partners Federal Credit Union, and Vista Feder-al Credit Union developed the “Clean Air Car Loan.” Thisspecial incentive provided Members a 0.25% discounton a car loan if they purchase a qualifying “Clean AirCar.”

Purchasing initiatives led to annualsavings of more than $750,000 throughprocurement of recycled office supplies.Among the office supply items mostcommonly purchased by our Companyare printer toner cartridges and officecopy and printer paper; these two itemsalone comprise about 45% of our officesupplies. As a result of key research andnegotiations between The Walt DisneyCompany and Office Depot, Disney nowpurchases recycled toner cartridges andrecycled-content copy paper. Purchasingtoner cartridges that have been remanu-

factured provide significant savings to theCompany. Recycled-content copy paperhas traditionally been much more expen-sive than virgin paper and, therefore, diffi-cult to acquire. Thanks to newly available“Green Top” copy paper, the Walt DisneyWorld Resort, The Walt Disney Studios,and Corporate sites now purchaserecycled-content office paper at a veryslight premium. Both the toner and paperproducts have been tested extensively,and the quality meets and in some casesexceeds that of previously used products.

[2] ABC Daytime shows General Hospital and Port Charles reused orrecycled 85% of the sets. In addition, ABC Touchstone Television has one of the largest sets ofrecycled scenery in Los Angeles.

America Recycles DayPUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS

In honor of America Recycles Day, celebratednationally November 15, ABC worked with aNew York State committee to air celebrityendorsed Public Service Announcementsthrough ABC owned and operated stations,as well as affiliate stations.

TRADE SHOWSVarious ABC sites hosted special events thatprovided employees an opportunity to meetABC vendors who recycle materials includingpolystyrene, fluorescent bulbs, and tonercartridges. Educational handouts andpromotional items were available to highlightthis year’s theme, “A Great Time to Renew OurCommitment to Recycling.” In 2000, morethan 3 million people participated in Ameri-ca Recycles Day events around the country.

Earth DayABC-owned television and Radio Disneystations throughout the country celebratedEarth Day with special messages, programs,

and community events, including:

Community and employee educational fairs.Children’s interactive events, special promo-tions, and art contests.5K Walk fundraising events supporting variousorganizations, such as The Como Zoo andConservatory in Minneapolis.Park cleanup events.

Community AchievementsNEW YORK HIGH SCHOOL OFENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

The ABC Risk and Environmental Manage-ment Department in New York worked withthe local High School of EnvironmentalStudies to provide support for their Adviso-ry Board, student internships, and educa-tional programs. In addition, ABC donatedcomputers, general supplies, and funding forspecial events and programs.

An intern was selected from the High Schoolof Environmental Studies to assist ABC indeveloping a new system of educatingemployees about proper recycling proce-

dures. Once completed, the project willprovide educational tools and new labels forall of their recycling containers.

Recycling AccomplishmentsDuring the year 2000,ABC divertedmore than 3millionpounds ofmaterialsfrom thelandfill,avoidingmore than$70,000 indisposal costs.Some of thematerials recycledincluded the following:

The Liberty Square bridge in theMagic Kingdom Park provides anentrance into the colonial past,but also represents how moderntechnology can benefit theenvironment. The bridge overwhich Guests, Cast Members, andparade floats travel has tradi-tionally been wooden, but is nowconstructed of boards made of arecycled plastic lumber productconsisting of half post-industrialwood, such as reclaimed woodenpallets, and half recycled polyeth-ylene plastic, such as grocery bags.

Ipe, a hardwood that comes fromremote parts of Brazil and Africa,was previously used to constructthe bridge. While Ipe is verysturdy, the Liberty Square bridgesupports more than 13 tons offloats during the daily MagicKingdom Parade. Consequently,wood planks on the bridge re-

quired replacement every threeyears.

Since Ipe wood was also becom-ing more expensive and difficultto obtain, the Magic KingdomEngineering team partnered withWalt Disney Imagineering andRide & Show Engineering toresearch a new product. AppliedTechnology at Ride & ShowEngineering suggested therecycled plastic lumber since itwas already being used in otherareas.

Durability and show quality alsoplayed important roles in thedecision to use plastic lumber forthe bridge. Tests have shown thatthe product withstands weight,temperature, and traffic withvery little impact. Subsequently,the new bridge has required verylittle maintenance.

In Florida, most potable water is supplied by the Floridaaquifer. This natural water source is recharged by rainfall, butunusually dry conditions during the past three years haveresulted in a significant reduction of available water foraquifers and lakes.

In January 2001, the South Florida Water ManagementDistrict declared a Phase II Severe Water Shortage for partsof South Florida, including some sections of the Walt DisneyWorld Resort. Restrictions put in place included reducingpotable (drinking) water consumption by 15% as comparedto usage in 2000.

In order to meet this goal, several groups partnered with theEnvironmental Initiatives Department and Reedy CreekEnergy Services to identify methods of reducing potable waterusage. Many areas converted potable water lines to supplyreclaimed water, which was already being used to irrigate mostof the property, including 53% of the Parks and 100% of thegolf courses.

Additional uses of reclaimed water now include the following:Cooling towersCleaning streets and sidewalks in the Parks Bus washingNew irrigation lines at Old Key West and Port Orleans

Many areas also implemented methods to reduce the overalluse of water:

Changed the frequency of landscape irrigationImplemented audits of water use in localized areas Turned off all non-recirculating fountains

Although rainfall did increase during the last half of the year,allowing some water restrictions to be lifted, many of the cha-nges implemented to reduce water consumption will provideconsiderable savings for years to come.

In total, the Resort reduced potable water consumption by2 billion gallons of water compared to the prior year.

WATER CONSERVATION

Cooperation between the Down-town Disney Marketplace theEnvironmental Circle of Excel-lence and local business units ledto increased environmental aware-ness and proactive support for avariety of programs and activities:

Expanded traditional recyclingprograms to include merchan-dise packaging, such as paper,polystyrene, and shrink-wrap. Reduced the costs associatedwith waste disposal by decreas-ing the volume and weight ofsolid waste generated.Transformed a storage closet atWorld of Disney into anEnvironmentality ResourceCenter, where Cast Memberscan access training and displaymaterials and share informa-tion with fellow teammates.Established an EnvironmentalityHotline specific to DowntownDisney that Cast Members canaccess to learn environmentaltips and hear about specialevents in their area.Hosted “Meet & Greet” sessionsto showcase environmentalefforts and best practices.Recognized business units thathave excelled in Environmen-tality with monthly awardspresented by area executives.

Environmental Excellence

Walt Disney World horticulture teams operate equipment thatuses reclaimed water for Resort landscaping.

[1] The deck of the Liberty Square bridge is madefrom a recycled material composed of wood andplastic. There are more than 1,400 plastic lumberproducts on Walt Disney World property, in-cluding benches, high chairs, and lifeguard stands.

[2] New hand dryers tested to minimize papertowel waste dry hands in less than 12 seconds,three times faster than conventional dryers.

[3] Walt Disney World merchandise locations usea 100% recycled packaging material that costs lessthan bubble wrap. As a result, use of bubble wraphas declined by 21% since 1999. New merchan-dise locations are equipped with On Stagemachines that make it more efficient and conven-ient for Cast Members to use the product.

The Disneyland Resort is required tocomply with Industrial WasteDischarge Requirements under theNational Pollutant Discharge Elimina-tion System (NPDES) Program. Witha full-service gas station, fire depart-ment, maintenance shops, and dozensof restaurants, the Resort resembles acity more than an industrial site. Thestorm water program encompassesmany best management practices(BMP) to meet discharge specifica-tions detailed in the permit.These range from non-struc-tural BMP, such as goodhousekeeping and preven-tative maintenance, tostructural BMP, such asoverhead coverage andsecondary containmentstructures.

Despite an excellent compli-ance record, the Resort contin-ued to pursue a proactiveapproach to storm water

management. Partnering with WaltDisney Imagineering Research &Development, new in-line storm draindevices were installed throughoutDisney’s California Adventure andDowntown Disney enhancing thereduction of pollutants in waterdischarged to storm drains.

The Disneyland Resort continuedto focus on resources that im-prove recycling procedures. For

example, recycling audits were developed for Operating Participants atDowntown Disney. By working closely with the Environmental AffairsDepartment to identify opportunities for improvement, these areas canincrease recycling rates, subsequently decreasing disposal costs.

The Resort also developed an aggressive strategy to collect batteries. InDecember 2001, battery collection sites were identified where Cast Memberscould recycle “Universal Waste,” including alkaline and carbon-zinc (common“household-type” batteries), mercury, nickel-cadmium, silver button, andsmall sealed lead-acid batteries.

Stormwater and WastewaterCompliance Discharge

Like every community in America, the Disneyland Resortis faced with environmental challenges that must bemanaged responsibly. Home to restaurants, shops,

complex mechanical systems, and maintenance facilities, theResort bears many similarities to a small city. In addition, aresident population of Cast Members and Guests create theirown impact on the environment. The Disneyland Resort is inthe business of mitigating these impacts every day.

Enhancing Show QualityDuring Resort expansion, controllers were installed to monitor and control waterattractions 24 hours per day. The new equipment provides data every six minutesallowing engineering teams to maximize efficiency of the system.

Alternative PackagingDisneyland Resort merchandise locations installed more than 50 new machinesto provide Guests with a 100% recycled-content packaging material. Benefits ofusing this product included lower cost and less storage space as compared tobubbled wrap. In addition, the Environmentality mascot, Jiminy Cricket isportrayed on the packaging material.

Each ship has an EnvironmentalOfficer dedicated to environ-mental training, compliance, and

waste minimization efforts, includingrecycling. Environmental committeescomprised of representatives fromseveral departments focus on imple-menting and enhancing environmentalpractices as part of the Disney CruiseLine commitment to Environmentali-ty. Best practices that result from thesemeetings are shared among DisneyCruise Line executives and managers.

Recycling on theHigh Seas

Crew Members on board DisneyMagic and Disney Wonder recognize

the importance of preserving the season which they live and work. Environ-mentality programs on board ourships extend beyond legal require-ments in several areas, includingextensive water treatment systemsand a proactive commitment torecycle and minimize waste.

For example, during 2001, Crew Memberefforts to sort and recycle materialsresulted in the collection of more than50,000 pounds of aluminum cans.

Proactive recycling on each ship alsorequires Crew Members to researchnew ways of recycling on board. Forexample, to ensure that live shows have

adequate power, the EntertainmentDepartment must dispose of batteriesat the end of each show. Recently,garbage handlers tested these batteriesin pagers to determine the remainingcharge. Now, more than 500 batteriesare captured for reuse each month.

GuestsWhile many Guests are fascinated bymarine life, such as starfish and seashells, Castaway Cay helps protect theenvironment by reminding Guests to“take only memories, leave onlyfootprints.” This policy, enforced byCrew Members, prohibits the removalof shells, which are often home tomarine life on the island. On board theships, Guests can support water conser-vation efforts by using stateroom towelsmore than once before replacing.

The Cast and Crew of Disney Magic andDisney Wonder recognize the value andbeauty of the ocean as an environment

where we are all guests. We will do our best to minimize our

impact on this magnificent ecosystemby practicing responsible waste

management and good stewardship ofour ecosystems, something we call

Disney’s Environmentality.

In 2001, Disney Cruise Line sponsored the U.S. Virgin IslandsNational Park Eco-Camp. This program teaches childrenabout marine and terrestrial ecology on the Islands. Whiledocked in St. Thomas, 50 children were welcomed on boardthe Disney Magic to tour the ship and participate in recogni-tion ceremonies with the ship’s Captain and Officers.

Disney Cruise Line VoluntEARS involved Cast and CrewMembers from the shoreside and on board teams. In Decem-ber, Disney Cruise Line hosted the 2nd annual Port Canaver-al Shore Cleanup. More than 70 VoluntEARS from DisneyCruise Line, the Port Authority, and United States CoastGuard helped clean the shore and mangroves along theBanana River. Their efforts resulted in collecting several

thousand pounds of garbage and recyclable materials.Additionally, Crew Members from Disney Wonder andDisney Magic collected money earlier in the year to supporttheir “adopt-an-agency” program that benefited the ArchieCarr Center for Sea Turtle Research.

DISNEY CRUISE LINE COMMITMENT

Disney Cruise Line also maintainsonline guidance on the environ-mental aspects of ship operations.Examples of recent updates to proce-dures included the following:

Marine Species Conservation, aprogram that helps protectmanatees and right whales inareas of critical habitat.

Ballast water management tominimize the risks from invasivespecies.

Smoke opacity measurement topromote monitoring of air quali-ty and meet objectives to exceedlegal requirements.

Monthly environmental com-mittee meetings to manage andsupport Company environmentalinitiatives.

Partnering with the marine com-munity to broaden environmentalissues, an updated Memorandumof Understanding between thecruise industry and the FloridaDepartment of EnvironmentalProtection encourages practicesthat exceed legal requirements, in-cluding new discharge proceduresfor “wastewater” outside Floridaterritory.

The Walt Disney World Animal Programsteam has been involved in sea turtle rehabil-itation for many years. To date, The LivingSeas team based at Epcot has cared for andreleased more than 200 turtles! Most of theturtles that find their way to Walt DisneyWorld are animals that have been rescuedby various organizations and come to uswith medical challenges. Long periods ofexposure to cold water is the biggestproblem these turtles face, resulting inmany physiological problems and illness.These cold-stunned turtles are rescued,rehabilitated at The Living Seas, and thenreleased under the supervision of the Flori-da Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Over the years, biologists have been veryinterested in tracking the migratory anddaily patterns of sea turtles. Using satellitetelemetry, biologists have learned moreabout turtle ranging patterns, leading tomany new avenues of study. Although thistechnology provides useful data, it doeshave some limitations. Given the size of thetransmitters, only adult turtles are capableof carrying the additional weight. Inaddition, the error in accuracy of the

geographic (latitude / longitude) pointsmay be rather high, resulting in transmis-sions that can be misleading.

This year, Disney Animal Programs CastMembers and the Archie Carr Center forSea Turtle Research at the University ofFlorida teamed up to test a new satellitetransmitter that is smaller in size. This newtechnology provided us with the very firstopportunity to attach transmitters to twojuvenile green sea turtles, which representthe majority of small-sized turtles beingrehabilitated by The Living Seas CastMembers.

In September, two turtles were releasednear Port St. Josephine, Florida, wearing thenew transmitters that were programmed tosend location points approximately everytwo days. The goal of this project was to testthe new satellite transmitter configurationto gain a better understanding of whererehabilitated juvenile sea turtles spend theirtime. This technology also provided newand exciting information on the movementpatterns of sea turtles with Guests atDisney’s Animal Kingdom. Guests now havethe opportunity to see satellite transmitterson a “plush” turtle and follow the turtles ona real-time animated loop map displayed inthe Wildlife Tracking Center at Rafiki’sPlanet Watch. Surprisingly, the studyfound that the turtles stayed relatively close— within 100 miles of their release sites.Approximately two months after release,the transmissions ceased, most likely dueto antenna challenges. Fortunately, witheach venture into new technology, a littlemore is learned about the endangeredspecies that surround us.

During a visit to Disney’s Animal Kingdom, you mightencounter tiny, black-and-white monkeys called cotton-toptamarins. These unique primates are ambassadors for a broad-er project involving Disney conservation biologist Dr. AnneSavage. Dr. Savage created Proyecto Tití (Project Tamarin), amulti-disciplinary field conservation program that combinesresearch, education programs and community involvement tomake the conservation of natural resources economically feasi-

ble for local communitiesin Colombia. These ef-forts result in protectingthe very habitat wherethe only cotton-toptamarins in the worldexist. According to Dr.Savage, “Developing ef-fective long-term conser-vation programs requires

more than just scientific studies. Itrequires a multi-disciplinary ap-proach that combines fieldresearch and effective scientificassessments of habitats, as well ascommunity programs that involve

local inhabitants in culturally relevant, action-based programs.Making the conservation of natural habitats and resourceseconomically attractive for local communities will ensure thesurvival of not only the cotton-top tamarin, but also the nativeflora and fauna of Colombia. Our goal, therefore, is to use thecotton-top tamarin as the flagship species for the conserva-tion of Colombia’s natural resources.”

We recognize that challenges facing wildlife today are numerous, including habitatdestruction, conflicts between people and animals, and lack of spacefor both. Whether they swim, fly, crawl, slither, or hop, theseendangered animals are the focus of the Disney WildlifeConservation Fund. As global citizens, we want tohelp experts create solutions to these issues byproviding some of the resources they desperate-ly need.

The Fund, established in 1995, is a globalawards program for the study and protectionof the world’s wildlife and ecosystems. Annualawards are provided to United States nonprof-it conservation organizations working along-side their peers in the U.S. and other countries.Many recipient organizations concentrate theiractivities on “biological hotspots” — areas rich inplant and animal life at risk of imminent destruction.Since its inception, the Fund has supported more than 200projects in 30 countries. Each project is evaluated on specificcriteria, including scientific integrity, magnitude of need, involvement of partner

organizations, ability to impact an area in the near-term, and elements of publiceducation and community involvement.

Developing and patenting a new method of launching fireworksthat improved show timing and quality, while eliminating virtu-ally all of the corresponding noise and emissions.

Walt Disney Imagineering is on a path tomake Hong Kong Disneyland its mostenergy-efficient Theme Park ever, with thehelp of a multidisciplinary team led by theEnvironment, Materials, and InfrastructureGroup at Walt Disney ImagineeringResearch & Development. The team hasidentified a package of energy conservationmeasures and efficient air conditioningtechnologies that will lower the projectedenergy consumption of Hong Kong Disney-land by 20% on Opening Day. The new,energy-efficient design will continueDisney’s long tradition of enhancing theGuest experience by maintaining comfort-able and healthy indoor environmentsthroughout the Resort attractions, shops,and hotel rooms at a fraction of the energyuse of conventional buildings.

Detailed computer simulations of energyuse across the Resort were conducted earlyin the design process. The simulationsenabled the team to choose the combinationof energy conservation measures thatoptimized both energy use and life cycle cost.

The key technologies selected

for implementation in various facilitiesacross the Resort include super-efficientwindows, dual-path air conditioning, andenthalpy wheels for heat and moisturerecovery. These elements combine to forman efficient and effective building envelopein the hot, humid climate of Hong Kong.

The energy simulations also enabled thedesign team to accurately compare theoperating cost impact of the various infra-structure scenarios considered. Preliminarycost estimates predict annual savings ofmore than $500,000 and a payback in lessthan one year. The environmental benefitsof energy savings are also impressive. Thenew design will reduce Resort electricalconsumption by over 5 million kilowatt-hours annually. This reduction translates tomore than 6,000 tons of carbon dioxideemissions avoided each year. Equally impor-tant, the Hong Kong Disneyland projecthopes to stimulate efficiency improvementsacross the Hong Kong market with itsdemonstration of green building technolo-gies and design principles.

The first Earth Day was held in 1970 as a nationwide protest designedto raise awareness among political groups, establishing environ-

mental concern as a national agenda. Earth Day is now an internation-al holiday celebrated annually each April 22. The 30th anniversary wasrecognized in 2000, with more than 180 countries hosting special events.At The Walt Disney Company, the entire month of April provides anopportunity to raise awareness and reinforce the business results ofDisney’s Environmentality with our employees and Guests.

In celebration of Earth Month each year, the DisneyStore Environmentality Competition encourages CastMembers to showcase environmental efforts at work

and in the community. This year, Disney Store #433 from Charlestown Mall in St. Charles, Illinois, was chosen as the first-placerecipient for their outstanding efforts, which included the following:

Introduced programs to recycle and reuse aluminum cans, cardboard, paper, plastics, shipping materials, store displays, andvideotapes. Sent soda can tabs to a local charity that benefited from money generated by recycling the tabs.Reduced the number of envelopes used to close registers.Ensured proactive water conservation.

Utilities ConservationConservation efforts at the Disneyland Resort Paris have significantly reducedwater, electricity, and natural gas consumption. The total reduction since 1997is equivalent to the expected demand for the new Walt Disney Studios Park.

New Recycling ContainersIn one year, the Disneyland Resort Paris prepared more than 1,300 tons of frenchfries. This year, new stainless steel containers were used to collect more than 195,000liters (50,400 gallons) of cooking oil generated during their production. The contain-ers have newly designed lids that help prevent oil from leaking into storm drainsand wheels that allow Cast Members to easily transport the containers inside thekitchen. The used cooking oil is collected by a specialized firm to be recycled.

Alternative Fuel VehiclesUse of alternative fuel vehicles has been a priority for the Disneyland ResortParis. Four new trams, carrying more than 2,000 Guests per hour, will be utilizedon the Tram Tour attraction. The trams will use compressed natural gas, a cleanfuel that reduces carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 35%. While these trams

are considered clean vehicles, there is also an effort in place to use dual-carbureted, low-emission vehicles, which primarily use liquefied petroleum gas(LPG) combined with a small reserve of unleaded gas to start the engine. Otherlow-emission vehicles in use include small vans and electric carts that Mainte-nance Cast Members use to travel and transport equipment backstage.

Of more than 650 automobiles and vans on property, nearly 50% met standardsfor alternative fuel vehicles.

Earth DayDuring the Earth Day event, members of the Environmental Team and Commu-nity Relations Department collected more than 90 kilos (198 pounds) of batter-ies and 25 kilos (55 pounds) of plastic bottle caps for recycling. The plastic capswere donated to a local organization that used the money generated fromrecycling to purchase wheelchairs.

Battery RecyclingMore than three metric tons of batteries werecollected at the Resort during 2001. Most ofthese batteries are generated by merchandiselocations that support a French regulationrequiring vendors to accept old batteries fromGuests purchasing replacements.

The Disneyland Resort Paris Park One maintenance team receivedthe 2001 Energy Trophy (pictured at left). This team was selected asthe overall winner based on results from a monthly competitionbetween maintenance teams that encouraged Cast Members tomonitor daily consumption and identify areas of improvement.

Cast Members were also encouraged to recycle batteries from itemssuch as pagers, cameras, and portable radios. A special collectionbox was distributed throughout backstage areas to make therecycling process more convenient.

WOW — Wonderful Outdoor WorldNow in its eighth year, the WOW — WonderfulOutdoor World — program continued to introduceurban youths, ages 8 –12, to the importance ofprotecting our environment. This Disney sponsoredprogram teaches students the value of respecting ourecosystems during the fun and excitement of anovernight camping experience in a local park.

The third annual WOW Equestrian Unit, consisting ofWOW participants, adults, and a mule train, participat-ed in the 112th Tournament of Roses Parade on

January 1, 2001. Ridingwith the unit was Mike

Dombeck, Chief of theUSDA Forest Service.

During the summer of2001, the WOW program was expanded to include

Utah. The Utah Federation for Youth along with numer-ous local sponsors including Snowbird Ski and SummerResort, Tree Utah, Utah Society for EnvironmentalEducation, The Recycling Coalition of Utah, The GreatSalt Lake Audubon, and others provide leadership andsupport for the new WOW-Utah program.

Community Involvement

IN CALIFORNIA —Mrs. DeniLopez and her 5th grade class

from Park Center School inSimi Valley had a big surprise

when Jiminy Cricket arrived attheir classroom to announce they had

been chosen as the grand prize winner ofJiminy Cricket’s Environmentality Challengein California. In May, the class was invited to

participate in a ceremony at Disney’s CaliforniaAdventure park, where the class was recognized by

Roy E. Disney, vice chairman of the board of directors of The Walt DisneyCompany; Delaine Eastin, State Superintendent of Public Instruction; BillLyons, Secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture; LindaMoulton-Patterson, Board Chair of the California Integrated Waste Manage-ment Board; and Jiminy Cricket — the “Environmentality mascot.”

Some of the students’ efforts included the following: Adopting and rehabilitating the school’s abandoned worm farm and creat-ing “Mini Worm Farms” for national distribution, helping to educate thepublic on the benefits of vermi-composting.Implementing a recycling program in the school that now captures morethan 25 pounds of paper and 40 pounds of food waste daily.Developing educational materials, lesson plans, and workshops to helpeducate and encourage community members to support similar efforts.

IN FLORIDA — Jiminy Cricket’s Environmentality Challenge is the resultof a partnership between The Walt Disney Company and the State of Flori-da’s Department of Environmental Protection. At Disney’s Animal Kingdomin May 2001, Roy E. Disney and David Struhs, State Secretary of the Depart-ment of Environmental Protection, joined the 5th grade class of HorizonElementary School in Sunrise, Florida, to honor them as the winner of JiminyCricket’s Environmentality Challenge. The winning class of 32 students fromJill Putney’s class developed a project that focused on water conservationand helped their school and community save more than 68,000 gallons ofwater per day.

The students’ efforts included:Hosting guest speaker toeducate students aboutwater conservation.Creating a “water patrol” tofind leaky faucets in theschool.Developing and tabulatingresults from a survey tomake people aware of theirdaily water usage. Hanging water conserva-tion awareness posters inthe neighborhood.

The Walt Disney Company has recycled

more than 551,000 tons of materials

in 10 years. While most recycling

programs help divert traditional items from

landfills, such as aluminum cans and

cardboard, nontraditional items can be more

challenging to recycle. Fortunately, many

vendors have established methods that use

nontraditional materials to manufacture new

products. For example, recycled tires can be

used in playground material, place mats, and

coasters; metals are transformed into picture

frames; and parking stops can be made from

plastic containers.

As with many businesses, success of the

recycling industry relies on supply and

demand. With that in mind, The Walt Disney

Company is committed to responsible procure-

ment practices, such as buying in bulk, purchas-

ing recycled-content products, and requesting

packaging materials that can be recycled.

More than 3,000 tons of steel, 58 tons of aluminum, and 7 tons of insulated copper wiring were recycled duringdemolition of the Horizons attraction building at Epcot.

The Walt Disney Company has a long history of incorpo-rating Environmentality into daily business practices.Grassroot efforts by Cast Members and employees

provide support for a variety of programs, including recycling,waste minimization, education, energy and water conserva-tion, and habitat conservation. In many cases, a Corporatestrategy that promotes environmental initiatives alsoproduces significant cost savings. For example, in the area ofenergy conservation, implementation of the EPA Green LightsProgram conserved enough energy to power Disney’s AnimalKingdom during the first year of operation. In 1998, ourCompany received commendation for this program with theGreen Lights Partner of the Year Award for the HospitalityIndustry.

Support from all Cast and employees creates a strong commit-ment to Environmentality, and these efforts are often recog-nized on a global level.

The Walt Disney Company was presented with the State of Califor-nia 2001 Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Awardon November 27, 2001, in the category of Children’s EnvironmentalEducation. Disney was recognized for outstanding efforts in integrat-ing environmental and economic objectives with state standards intothe classroom as part of Jiminy Cricket’s Environmentality Challengeprogram.

Paul Allen, chief engineer of energy manage-ment with Reedy Creek Energy Services at theWalt Disney World Resort, received the 2001Energy Manager of the Year Award from theAssociation of Energy Engineers. Paul has identi-fied numerous ways to reduce and control energyusage that included the following:

Spearheaded the Company’s participation inthe Environmental Protection Agency’s GreenLights and Energy Star Programs, reducingmillions of kilowatt-hours of energy per year.Assisted local areas with “building tune-ups,” a process designed to help areas fine-tune energy management systems andidentify maximum energy savings.Developed a unique Utility Reporting Systemon the Company Intranet site so local areascan monitor and track daily energy usage.
