MAIN CAUSES Cosmetics:hair dyes, nail polish, nail polish remover, deodorants, moisturizers, aftershave lotions, perfumes, sunscreens.

    Metal compound (in jewelry):Nickel Plants:

1.Cow Parsnip. The juices of all parts contain a phototoxint

hat can act on contact with skin and exposure to ultravioletlight, causing anything from a mild rash to a blistering

2.Giant Hogweed :Giant Hogweed is a phototoxic plant. Itssap can cause

    phytophotodermatitis (severe skininflammatio

ns) when the skin is exposed to sunlight or toUV-rays.

    TYPES OF DERMATITIS

1.CONTACT DERMATITIS:Contact dermatitis is skininflammation caused by direct contact with aparticular substance causing the appearance of rashes.

Prevention and Treatment:Contact dermatitis canbe prevented by avoiding contact with the causative

substance. Barrier creams are also available that can block

certain substances. Itching can be relieved with a number of topical drugs small areas of dermatitis can be soothed by applying

pieces of gauze or thin cloth dipped in cool water oraluminum acetate.

    2. Atopic Dermatitis :Atopicdermatitis is chronic, itchy inflammation

of the upper layers of the skin thatoften develops in people who have hayfever or asthma and in people who havefamily members with these conditions.

    Symptoms:Infants may develop red,

oozing, crusted rashes on the face, scalp, diaper area, hands, arms, feet, orlegs.

In older children and adults, the rashoften occurs (and recurs) in only one ora few spots.

Seborrheic Dermatitis :Seborrheic dermatitis ischronic inflammation that causes yellow, greasyscales to form on the scalp and face and

occasionally on other areas. Seborrheic dermatitis occurs most often in

    infants. Symptoms:Seborrheic dermatitis usually begins

gradually, causing dry or greasy scaling of thescalp (dandruff), sometimes with itching butwithout hair loss.

Treatment: The scalp can be treated with ashampoo containing pyrithione zinc, selenium

sulfide . an antifungal drug, salicylic acid and sulfur.

STASIS DERMATITIS: Stasis dermatitis isinflammation on the lower legs from pooling ofblood and fluid.

to occur in people who have varicose (dilated, twisted) veins and swelling (edema). It usuallyoccurs on the ankles but may spread upward tothe knees.

Skin break down and form an open sore (ulcer)typically near the ankle.

Treatment: Long-term treatment is aimed atkeeping blood from pooling in the veins around the

Urticaria Urticaria (or hives) is a skin condition, commonly

caused by an allergic reaction. generally caused by direct contact with an

allergenic substance, or an immune response to

food or some other allergen. Symptoms:characterized by raised red skin

wheals (welts). Wheals from urticaria can appear anywhere on

the body, including the face, lips, tongue, throat, and ears.

Pathophysiology:The skin lesions of urticarial disease arecaused by an inflammatory reaction in the skin, causingleakage of capillaries in the dermis, and resulting in anedema. disease thought to be caused by the release of

histamine and other mediators of inflammation(cytokines) from cells in the skin.

Types: Acute urticaria usually show up a few minutes after

contact with the allergen and can last a few hours to

several weeks. common causes of reaction include consumption of

shellfish, nuts, eggs, fish, acid derivatives. Chronic urticaria refers to hives that persists for 6

weeks or more. There are no visual differences betweenacute and chronic urticaria. Some of the more severechronic cases have lasted more than 20 years.

Treatment :The best treatment for urticaria isto identify and avoid the cause and anyaggravating factor.

    Doctors prescribe anti-histamines for immediate

    relief of symptoms. e.g diphenhydramine.
