N.B. The lot is accompanied bya letter dated May 20, 1963, fromRichard S. Carroll, then the AssistantDirector of the Columbia Museumof Art (South Carolina), describingconservation work that was done onthe painting at hand. Carrolls lettersuggests that a later signature, whichwas on top of a gesso plug, wasremoved by the museum at the time ofrestoration in 1963. He surmised thatthe later signature had replaced a prior, earlier signature by Frith, and that ...in all probability the original signaturewas lost in this previous restoration andwas replaced at that time.
