Discovery Education LPB Cyberchannel Writing Prompts (for STPSB teachers)

1. Open http://www.lpb.org/education/ or go to http://www.lpb.org and click on the Education tab. 2. First time users will need to enter their school code: Registered users will enter their username and password:

3. After login, you will see the main screen. Choose Classic View or New View

4. Writing Prompt Builder a. Choose Builder Tools from the drop down menu. b. Choose Writing Prompt Builder

c. You can create your own writing prompts or choose ones already created by Discovery Education. d. You can also Edit, Assign, or Delete a writing prompt. 5. Creating a New Writing Prompt: a. Enter the information about your writing prompt (title, grade level, subject)

b. Click the button. You will be prompted to choose the location to save.

c. Build Your Writing Prompt. By default, there is one RESOURCE SECTION and one TEXT

SECTION. You can also add more resource and text sections. d. Click the EDIT button to add a resource or to add text. e. A new window will pop up when you edit a resource. You can SEARCH Discovery Education by

Keyword i.e. Anne Frank or Rosa Parks (for many Media Types - see page 7) or you can choose something from your content.

f. Click the button to add a resource you want, such as an Encyclopedia Article.

g. Add a Resource Caption (optional), then click the button.

h. When you click the button (to edit text), a new window will appear. Type in the Writing

Prompt Instructions, then click the button.

i. Click the button when you are finished adding and editing Resources and Text.

j. To Preview your Writing Prompt, click the button. This will allow you to have a Printer Friendly document or Save as MS Word. You can also select an Encyclopedia

Article to print.

k. Assign Your Writing Prompt. Determine how your students will access your writing prompt. You can Assign to Class or Student or Assign by Code or URL. In STPSB, you cannot use real student names.

Read the passages about Anne Frank and Rosa Parks. As you read each passage, think about the ways in which this young girl and this lady showed great courage in what they did. Then use the passages to help you write a well organized multiparagraph composition.

Your class is studying courageous people in an English class. You have been assigned to write a multiparagraph paper identifying which of the two people you read about showed the greatest courage in difficult situations. Use details from both passages to support your opinion. Be sure to convince your teacher why your choice is the best.
