The Creation of a New ClassicThe Company has gained valuable input from existing Discovery 55 owners. These insights have helped us to improve many practical details that make sailing and living on board even more of a pleasure. With requests from aspiring owners, Ron Holland and Ken Frievokh were commissioned to incorporate a host of new features to enhance the Discovery 57.

As the naval architect Ron Holland Design has ensured the yacht delivers stunning performance, while Ken Freivokh Design, as external stylists and interior designs, has given the 57 a sleek appearance and spacious feel.

Designed to be handled by just two people, it is the ease of handling, attention to detail and ingenious use of space that raises the Discovery 57 above the competition. This sleek new design bears the essential qualities of every Discovery yacht: she is designed for performance, built for safety, equipped for luxury and defined by quality.

Effortless Handling

The Discovery 57’s superb performance and easy motion come from her classic Ron Holland design, resulting in exhilarating and effortless sailing. She exudes a feeling of quiet confidence and effortlessly eats up the miles. Her sleek waterline, fine entry and beam carried well aft contribute to her stunning performance and comfortable passage-making, as do the high ballast ratio and generous sail plan. The semi-balanced rudder and bulb keel ensure that she is light on the helm and easy to manoeuvre. Regardless of sea-state, she is a stiff, steady boat with an easy motion.

To achieve simplicity and reliability, the Discovery 57 has a rig that one person can handle with ease in a wide range of conditions. Simple sail handling comes from a self-tacking jib, roller furling on all the sails (including the main), no running back-stays and electric winches as standard. All controlled from the safety of the cockpit.

Discovery Yachts are creators of the world’s most inspired blue-water cruising yachts, designed to take two people on the ultimate journey of discovery.

The Company continues to set new standards for luxury cruising with the new Discovery 57 - a worthy addition to the Discovery fleet and a new sister for the widely acclaimed Discovery 55.

Setting a Standard in the World of MonohullsDiscovery Hallmark

The Discovery 57 retains the panoramic vision from the saloon, a hallmark of Discovery Yachts, so that you can enjoy the view both on passage and at anchor. The raised navigation station within the saloon provides a safe and comfortable command position. Close to the cockpit, you have panoramic vision to keep a good watch. Out of the elements watch keeping is much less tiring. It is this, as much as the easy sail handling, that truly makes this the perfect two-handed cruising yacht.

Luxury Living

The contemporary feel and ingenious use of space comes from superyacht interior designer Ken Freivokh. This interior design team are inspirational in the way they make the Discovery 57 a luxurious home-from-home, to be enjoyed with family and friends.

With the twin helm stations, the cockpit has a real ‘wow’ factor. Not only is it a really good size for entertaining and easy to walk through, it is deep, secure and comfortable. Two-person seats on both the fore and aft decks are a great alternative for enjoying a sundowner; whilst the transom provides a practical swimming or diving platform.

Just three companionway steps take you in to the light and airy saloon - a room with a view, with its dining area large enough for eight, a sofa to relax in and a commanding navigator’s seat.

The spacious galley has a cavernous front-opening fridge and freezer, generous work surfaces and is a perfect width for true ease of use at sea. Laundry facilities are in a separate workroom.

The two guest cabins reflect the standards of the sumptuous master cabin. Good headroom, plenty of stowage and effective natural ventilation throughout the yacht are essential design features.

Customising Your Design

Each Discovery is unique as it is built by taking account of the individual owner’s needs. We have a state-of-the-art joinery department, which means that we can customise the internal layout and finishes. In addition, we offer as much choice and flexibility with the soft furnishings and onboard equipment as possible to deliver a semi-custom yacht to fulfil your dreams.

The new Discovery 57 is the ultimate short-handed cruising yacht: designed for performance, built for safety, equipped for luxury and defined by quality.

Hull Hull Construction

The immensely strong lay-up specified by the designers and structural engineers meets or exceeds full CE regulations for Category ‘A-Ocean’. The hull is laid up in female moulds and is constructed in a modern, climate-controlled laminating facility. It has two coats of isothalic gelcoat, which is top quality, with non-pigmented gelcoat below the waterline. The hull structure is produced by a vacuum infusion that produces a hull with the precise fibre to resin ratio resulting in a hull that is stiffer, lighter and higher quality. This combination makes for an impervious hull surface that is highly resistant to osmosis. The hull carries a 5-year written guarantee against osmosis.

Vinylester resin is used throughout the hull, which gives superior strength over more traditional polyester resins. The lay-up incorporates a high density foam core which provides exceptional stiffness and insulation. Laying-up under vacuum ensures complete structural integrity. Woven mat is used extensively for optimum strength to weight ratio, and this is further stiffened by a layer of woven Kevlar throughout the forward part of the hull. Massive stringers run the full length of the boat, with structural rings athwart ships. These incorporate the engine beds and tank supports.

Composite constructed bulkheads are rigidly

laminated to the hull and deck. Watertight bulkheads are aft of the chain locker, between the sail locker and accommodation, and forward of the lazarette lockers. Watertight glands surround any services that need to go through the the bulkheads and all watertight areas have their own bilge pumps.

The hull below the waterline is epoxy coated (a further barrier to osmosis) and given two coats of anti-fouling. It has a double boot top line moulded in the gelcoat and a hand-applied caveta line.

Hull to Deck Join

The deck incorporates a raised flange for the bulwark. This is laid onto the matching hull flange with a structural bonding paste, and the two are then fastened with stainless bolts. The teak capping rail is then fastened onto the flange. The end result is very robust, yet stylish.

HullInteriorFinishes

All surfaces are coated, even the ones that are out of sight. Hatches are edge-sealed and varnished or painted on both sides. Wood surfaces are varnished, lacquered or painted as appropriate to best boat-building practices. Bilge areas are flow-coated, with easy access to the sea-cocks, etc.

Keel

The shape of the external ballast keel is the result of many years of research and development

by the Ron Holland design team. The total weight is 9,500 kilos (21,000 lbs), but most is concentrated in a sophisticated shaped bulb at its base, enhancing the stability and comfort of the boat. (Machinery, batteries and tanks have also all been set low in the boat for the same reason.) The inclusion of 3% antimony to the lead cast makes it robust and very smooth. The keel is through-bolted to the hull stub with cast-in stainless steel bolts.

Steering

Two 1060mm (42”), leather covered alloy wheels, control a Jefa torque tube steering system, giving a positive and direct control of the rudder. Each wheel has a friction brake. The rudder is semi-balanced and over-size to provide light yet positive steering in all sea conditions. The rudder blade is very strong, made of GRP with Kevlar reinforcement, and constructed on a solid rudder stock made from high-yield 329 stainless steel. An emergency tiller fits directly onto the top of the rudder shaft.

Deck and Superstructure

Deck

Having a foam and balsa core to the GRP deck gives strength and insulation. In all load bearing areas there is additional strength by using plywood and aluminium or stainless steel backing plates.

The deck has a self-draining anchor locker, which is deep enough to keep the weight of the chain low; a cavernous sail locker; gas bottle stowage; passerelle stowage; two lazarette lockers and a transom locker. The lazarette and sail lockers are fitted with interior lights. The sail locker also has a gas strut. There is a hot and cold bathing shower and bathing ladder.

The deck is teak laid, using finest quarter sawn teak with no visible fastenings. There is a teak capping on the bulwarks. Man-made teak is offered as an alternative.

Cockpitandhelmareas

The cockpit has a real wow feel. It is a really good size for entertaining and easy to walk through. Being a centre, rather than aft, cockpit and having high seat-backs it has a great feeling of security. Carefully sculptured seat bases and well angled, deep seat backs make it comfortable even without cockpit cushions. The substantial table incorporates a drinks stowage and glass holders. It has a stainless steel grab handle and a central foot rail. There are boom lights for evening, al fresco dining. Music speakers are water-resistant.

Two-person dolphin watching seats at the bow and stern are a great alternative place to relax and enjoy the scenery.

The two helm stations, slightly outboard of the cockpit, have excellent visibility. Their position gives confidence when manoeuvring. Each helm seat is sculptured for comfort and support. The leather-covered wheel is mounted on the pedestal, with instruments, controls and throttle (throttles on both wheels is an option) immediately to hand. The stern rail extends forward to provide a safe and secure helm position.

Sprayhoodand(Optional)BiminiTop

The cockpit is well protected by a large folding sprayhood. It has stainless 25mm (1”) diameter supports, with a grab handle on its aft edge. Large clear panels provide good forward visibility. The sprayhood folds on to a moulded coaming on the coachroof.

A Perspex windscreen, bimini top and full sun-awning are all offered as options.

Throughout the sleek appearance and practical functionality of the deck and superstructure has been determined by Ken Freivokh Design.

Deck Equipment

Winches

A choice of Harken or Lewmar winches are offered as standard with Andersen winches as an option. They comprise of:

2 x electric self-tailing winches for the genoa sheets

1 x electric self-tailing winch for the main sheet

1 x electric self-tailing winch for reefing lines and self-tacking staysail sheets

2 x winches on the mast for headsail halyards

2 x winch handles and winch pockets

Mainsail clew outhaul and other control lines are led aft from the mast area, via a bank of organisers and Spinlock rope clutches to an electric winch. This is on the forward port side of the cockpit. The whole arrangement makes for very easy sail-handling, all within the cockpit.

StainlessSteel

All stainless steel fabrications are in finest marine 316-grade and mirrored polished.

The pulpit rail has a “Swedish” style opening (with safety chain) for Mediterranean bows-to mooring. It houses the double dolphin-watching seats. Navigation lights are set in protective stainless housings. The stern rail incorporates the two aft deck seats, affords protection for the helmsman, has an opening gate to the transom, and includes the life-raft stowage for rapid deployment. High stanchions (715mm/28”) are set on the gunwales, making the side decks clear and uncluttered. Stainless double guard wires connect the pulpit and stern rail with boarding gates on each side. A stainless steel boarding ladder is an option.

There are 8 stainless steel mooring cleats set into the bulwarks with anti-chafe rails as appropriated. Grab handles run along the deck saloon roof. There are grab handles on the transom for ease of getting out of the dinghy. The cockpit has stainless U-bolts for safety harness attachment, and securing eyes to run webbing jackstays (safety lines) up each side of the deck from well aft to the bows.

SailHandlingEquipment

Harken equipment is standard. (Lewmar is optional.)

Both the genoa and self-tacking jib have manual control roller-reefing. (Electric or hydraulic control is optional.)

The self-tacking Solent jib runs on a curved track. Its sheet is led via blocks to a control clutch in the cockpit. The roller reefing lines are led via turning blocks to an electric winch on the coachroof, which is operated from the cockpit.

Genoa sheets are led to a track on the cap rail, which keeps the decks clear of trip hazards. They are then led to a pair of turning footblocks and onto the primary electric winches.

The main sheet track is recessed to be flush with the deck. It has manual control lines.

Anchoring Anchoring

An oversize (40kg/88lbs) Delta anchor self stows in the stemhead fitting. It comes with 100m of 10mm calibrated galvanised chain. The chain falls vertically into the chain locker. The bitter end is securely fastened high up in this locker so that it can be easily checked. Large Delrin rollers make it easy for the anchor to be made ready in the launch position and for the chain to flow smoothly.

A vertical windlass is installed on deck. The 24v motor is in the dry locker aft of the chain locker. The windlass can be operated remotely from the cockpit or on the foredeck.

Davits

We have developed davits which enable just one person to launch and recover the tender with ease. The tender is clear of the transom for the whole process, negating any concern about damage. Yet when stowed, it sits snug and secure against the boat, keeping the weight as far forward as possible.

Interior There are various options as to how the interior is laid out and we like to offer an interior tailored to the needs of the owner. The standard joinery finish is available in cherry, maple or light oak. Other wood finishes include teak, mahogany, burrs, birds-eye, etc. We will be pleased to discuss the characteristics of each wood. There is also a wide choice of soft furnishings. The standard flooring throughout is low maintenance Amtico, which has sheen yet is non-slip. Carpets and wood flooring are optional.

Three easy steps link the cockpit to the saloon. There are handholds and sturdy fiddles to aid easy and secure movement throughout the boat. Minimum headroom throughout is 1950mm/6’5”. Four AirOnly vents ventilate the vessel when it is closed up. All berths (including the saloon seating pilot berth ) have lee cloths.

Saloon

The saloon offers light and panoramic views, whether standing or sitting. Up to eight people can dine in comfort. The large dining table folds to ‘coffee table’ size. A good size sofa to starboard is also designed to be an excellent pilot berth. Additionally the dining seating is long enough to use as an additional berth. To provide excellent ventilation there are two forward opening deck hatches which scoop in the air. Forward opening saloon windows are

available as an option. There is a Sony/Clarion CD/tuner with MP3/Ipod connection, with overhead speakers. A television is available as an option.

Navigation Area

Within the saloon, the raised navigator’s station has great visibility. The large navigator’s seat is contoured for maximum comfort and support. The chart table incorporates the plotter/radar screen, whilst other navigation aids and radios are mounted outboard. Stowage for almanacs, pilot guides, etc is conveniently to hand. There is a separate chart drawer under the pilot berth.

Galley

The galley has been designed for easy use both at sea and in harbour . A galley width that allows you to work safely, a window that vents to the cockpit, a ‘wipe-down’ Corian worktop with fiddle upstands, centreline sinks, plus a drying ‘sink’ where dishes are contained - are all considerations to make life easy when cooking underway. Add to this the extensive locker and drawer storage; handy garbage chute, microwave and 5-burner cooker and there is still enough space for an optional front-loading dishwasher.

The GN Espace 5 burner gimballed cooker, with grill and oven, is set into a GRP moulded recess. It is fitted with fiddles/pan holders and has flame failure devices. The outside gas supply has a safety shut-off valve and alarm. There is

This room is aft of the navigation desk and forward of the master cabin heads. It has a full size washer/dryer (as standard), an area for foul-weather clothing and ample space to store tools, domestic items and cockpit cushions. The work room leads to the engine room.

Owner’s Stateroom (aft)

This cabin is light, airy and spacious. The sumptuous mattress has been specially designed for us by Natural Mat to provide the best night’s sleep. Split in two, for ease of handling, this king-size mattress measures 2m long x 1.8m wide (6’7” long by 5’11” wide). Generous wardrobes outboard and drawers under the foot of the bed provide ample storage, as well as cupboards under the side tables, and long- term storage under the mattress. A vanity table, mirror and Ottoman sofa all add to the luxury. A television is optional.

A large hatch is positioned over the berth, with two opening portlights in the coach roof. Two fixed hull ports,to port and

starboard (opening ports are optional) and an aft facing port add to the light, with two AirOnly vents for extra ventilation. 24v fans are available as an option.

En-suite Heads Compartment (aft)

The Owner’s Stateroom en-suite heads is accessed to starboard. It has a Tecma electric WC, hand basin, mirrored cupboard, plus a separate large shower compartment with built-in seat. A GRP moulded unit makes for easy cleaning, with Corian flooring for comfort under foot. The basin surrounds are ‘Corian’ marble finish (or equivalent) in a colour to owner’s choice. Ventilation is by an opening portlight in the coachroof and an opening overhead hatch. Pressurised hot and cold water is fed to a mixer tap at the handbasin and to the shower.

Double Cabin Forward

The forward cabin provides sleeping accommodation that is nearly as spacious as the Owner’s Stateroom. The king size bed is 2m long x 1.6m wide (6’7” long with a maximum width of 5’3”). The split mattress is set on special battens, which aid ventilation. There are bedside shelves, hanging locker and a mirrored cupboard, as well as drawers at the foot of the bed. There is stowage under the mattress for bulky items. 24v fans and television are available as an option.

MastandRigOptions

The oval section mast is keel stepped with double swept back spreaders. This negates the need for running backstays and forward facing lowers. The result is clear, uncluttered decks and easy handling.

The standard mast finish is silver anodised aluminium . White finish (Awlgrip) spars are available as an option. The standard rig is electric in-mast reefing. Push button control from the cockpit allows one person to reef or furl away the sail. There is a manual over-ride for the electric motor. The mast is fitted with internal halyards. A conventional horizontal battened main is available as an option.

The standard headsail arrangement is a double headsail rig. This has a roller reefing, self-tacking blade jib (c.90%) and roller reefing genoa (for use just off the wind). This is also known as a Solent Jib rig. It has the advantage of having the ideal sail available for any condition. It also lends itself to double headsail downwind sailing.

Mast Electrics

The mast is fitted with a masthead VHF antenna and cable, masthead tricolour and anchor light, steaming and deck lights. Raymarine I70 wind instruments. Windex wind indicator. 4KW radar antenna mounted to the front of the mast.

Engine and machinery

Engine Room

The Discovery 57 has a full walk-in engine room, with the main access door from the work room. There is good access to the engine and to ancillary equipment. There is good lighting and fan ventilation in the engine room area. Automatic fire extinguishers with Fireboy alarm are fitted as standard.

Insulation

The engine room is fully lined with fire retardant insulation that is faced to prevent any contamination by diesel or inflammable substances. All access panels have rubber sealing strips. All ancillary pumps and motors are rubber mounted for quietness. Ventilation ducting is also sound-insulated where appropriate.

Engine

The standard engine is the Volvo D3 150hp. This is a 5-cylinder, turbo charged engine, which develops 150HP at 3,300 RPM. Fitted with a 2.43:1 reduction gearbox, it is designed for smooth, long running operation. It has excellent torque characteristics that allow it to power a large, slow turning propeller for quiet motoring. The engine is fitted with dual alternators. (See electrical specification for more details). Volvo provide an excellent world-wide service network.

SternGear

The engine is mounted on captive flexible feet to minimise vibration. An Aquadrive coupling at the inboard end of the 38 mm (1.5”) stainless steel shaft then transfers the thrust to the hull via a thrust bearing. This further reduces vibration, noise and wear. The shaft is led to a P-bracket bonded to the hull structure. An anode is fitted to the shaft. A rope cutter is optional.

Propeller

A folding three-bladed 24” diameter Gori propeller is fitted as standard. The propeller folds automatically to maximise sailing performance. It gives excellent handling performance, ahead or astern. A feathering Max-Prop is available as an option.

Generator

A Northern Lights low speed, heavy-duty generator of 4.5kW 50Hz [5kW at 60Hz] is fitted as standard. This comes with its own insulated sound shield, and is located in the insulated engine room for near silent running. The exhaust is fed to an HMI water separator, which eliminates almost all exhaust and cooling water noise. A remote control panel includes automatic shut down facilities.

There is the option to upgrade to a larger 7KW at 50HZ Onan generator to support full air-conditioning, if specified.

BowThruster

A 10HP MaxPower tunnel bow thruster (24v) is fitted as standard. The tunnel is fully faired into the hull.

FuelTanks

Fuel is provided from two rigid tanks made of special fuel grade high-density polyethylene. Total capacity of the tanks is 1,300 litres (343 US gals). The tanks are fitted with baffles and inspection covers. We have fitted these because we believe them to be far superior to stainless steel or aluminium tanks, as they minimise condensation and are much less likely to suffer from stress cracks. They have the added advantage that they are lighter. Each tank has its own deck filler and breather. Each tank has a pick-up point at the very bottom to permit the removal of any water or contaminants. The main fuel feed is then led to a Racor (or equivalent) fuel filter and water separator. This has a warning light on the main panel. This is in addition to the filters of the main engine and generator. There are fuel contents gauges for all tanks.

Plumbing FreshWaterSystem

Fresh water is stored in two separate food grade high-density polyethylene tanks. These are fitted with baffles and inspection covers. They are completely taint free and do not suffer from the corrosion that can affect stainless steel tanks in some parts of the world. Total capacity of the two tanks is 1,000 litres (264 US gals). Each of these has its own deck filler and breather. The starboard tank can also be fed from the rainwater catching system. Each tank is fitted with a contents gauge. A water maker is available as an option.

Hot water is fed from a 50 litre insulated calorifier, taking heat from the engine’s heat exchanger. It is also fitted with a thermostatically controlled immersion heater (230v or 110v as specified) for use when alongside, or when the generator is running.

Hot and cold pressurised water is fed throughout the yacht by an automatic water pump system. There are outlets in the galley, at both hand basins and showers, in the cockpit and at the aft deck shower. There is also a foot-operated freshwater pump in the galley. There is an optional salt water outlet in the galley.

ToiletsandHoldingTanks

The Discovery 57 is designed to meet all the current international regulations on discharge overboard and holding tanks.

The yacht is fitted with Tecma electric WCs in both forward and aft heads as standard. The WCs can discharge directly overboard when at sea or into holding tanks (black water tanks) each of approximately 80 litres. The holding tanks are positioned in such a way that they are discharged overboard by gravity. They can also be emptied by shore side facilities. All pipe work is reinforced sanitation grade hose designed for use with marine heads, and is double clamped. There are change over valves that allow you to select whether the WC’s flush using salt or fresh water.

GreyWaterHoldingTank(optional)

A grey water holding tank can be fitted as an option. This would be situated above the keel sump, and the galley, showers and hand basins can all be diverted into this. This can be discharged overboard with its own electric pump.

Bilge Pumps

The cabins drain via limber holes to a deep sump, fitted with two high output electric bilge pumps. A manual bilge pump, fitted with a strum box, can be operated from the cockpit

There are also electric bilge pumps for the forward sail locker and both lazarette lockers. All three pumps are fitted with automatic switches, and a 2 position switch (On/Auto) at the control panel.

Deck Wash System

A salt water pressure pump is fitted, with an outlet at the anchor well. The supply terminates with a snap-on connection, and comes complete with 15 m of hose and a hose gun allowing easy anchor and deck cleaning. A fresh water outlet is provided in the cockpit for fresh water deck rinsing.

Through Hull Fittings

All through-hull fittings near or below the waterline are fitted with shut-off valves, and double stainless steel clamps. All through hulls are Forespar Marelon for trouble free, corrosion free and electrolysis free safety.

Electrical D.C Electrics

The engine and generator are 12v start. The main engine is fitted with a 80 amp hour 12v alternator. Both the main engine and the generator have their own start batteries.

A second 24v, 110 amp hour alternator on the engine supplies the yacht’s main 24v system. The domestic batteries are industrial heavy duty, deep cycle, sealed gel batteries totalling 480 amp hour capacity at 24v. (Equivalent to 960 amps at 12v). (Rated at 20C) These batteries, under normal use, should have a ten year plus operational life, and are the best batteries available anywhere. They are completely maintenance free and are fully secured.

A 24v to 12v converter provides a 12v power source.

All wiring is tinned multi-strand marine grade cable.

Heavy-duty battery switches isolate all circuits except bilge pumps which are independent. All circuits are connected to circuit breakers on the main control panel. All wiring is clearly labelled and numbered or colour coded throughout. Wiring is fed in conduits wherever appropriate.

The control panel provides full power management information (both D.C. and A.C.).

All chain plates and mast are grounded to the

ballast keel for lightning protection.

Sterngear, all metal through hulls, generator and main engine are electrically bonded and linked to the common earth system and large anode.

BatteryCharging

Engine and generator start batteries are charged by their own alternators. This provides secure starting back up with the two separate batteries. These have an emergency link facility, which would also allow charging from either alternator. The 24v domestic battery bank is charged by the 110 amp hour alternator on the engine or by the 5Kw Victron Energy Quattro inverter charger. This charges at 120 amps hours (24v) from the generator or shore power.

A.CElectricalSystem

An A.C. panel controls a 32 amp 230v (110v option) ring main, with power sockets in the galley, main saloon and cabins. A.C. power can be provided by the standard Victron Energy 5 kW static inverter, dockside supply, or standard diesel generator. (A second 2.5 kW static inverter is available as an option). A 1kW immersion heater is fitted in the hot water tank for use when using dockside supply or with the generator.

Shore power is supplied by a 3 core Marinco double insulated 32 amp PVC dockside power cable (20 m) with appropriate sockets is provided. An isolation transformer is fitted as standard to provide increased electrical safety onboard and galvanic protection for all electrical items.
