LONDON— It is not theAmerican way for an ath-lete tobid farewell fromthetop of the mountain. Thereis always one more season, one more challenge, onemore contract.
Willie Mays stumbledinfamously around centerfield. Brett Favre made amockery of the word “re-tirement.” Shaquille O’Nealmorphed into the Big BitPlayer.
Michael Phelps did it hisway, this way: Gold. Gold.Gold. Gold. Gone.
“I did everything Iwanted to,” he said. “If youcan say that about yourcareer, there is no need tomove forward.”
The final session of theOlympic swimming com-petition turned into a Sat-urday night farewell partyfor the 27-year-old Phelps. The public-address an-nouncer primed the crowdthusly: “Are you ready tosee the last race of a certainMichael Phelps?”
No matter that the racewasa400-meterrelay,with31 other swimmers com-peting. The U.S. won, withPhelps chasing down theJapanese team during thebutterfly leg to put theAmericans (Matt Greversbackstroke, Brendan Han-sen breaststroke and Na-than Adrian freestyle)ahead for good. (Butterfly-er Tyler McGill of Cham-paign shared in the gold forswimming prelims.)
After the race, swim-mers from other nationslined up to shake Phelps’hand.
