Quadra Island Quilt and Garden Tour: June 23 & 24, 10am to 4pmAt this most beautiful time of year when Quadra glows with a myriad of greens interspersed with vibrant flowers, who does not want to be in a garden? This biennial tour will take you to gardens where quilts hang on washing lines or festoon fences and arbours. With this warm spring after a dry summer last year and a wet winter, plants are blooming like there is no tomorrow.  What better way to spend a weekend than to wander through some of Quadra’s beautiful gardens while admiring the quilts that have been made over the past two years. There will be quilters in each garden to answer any questions you may have about quilting or how to get started quilting. There is more to quilting than cutting big pieces of fabric into smaller pieces only to join it together again. Colour, texture, pattern and the actual quilting are all part of the art. If you love fabrics and colour, this may be for you.

Two small farms are also participating and we have it on good authority that baby goats are to be born about 2 weeks before the tour. Who can resist a kid? The Community Garden is looking wonderful and is a great place to check out what can be grown here. There will be a compost display there to help you deal with your organic waste while providing nutrients for the garden. The Golf Course is showing off its deer resistant landscaping and providing light snacks and toilet facilities.

Tickets are $15 and good for both days. We ask that you carry your tickets with you when visiting the gardens. Tickets are available now at Inspirations and Works of H’Art. The Tourist Information Booth will sell tickets on the days of the tour. All the money raised by the tour stays on

The Trans Mountain Pipeline, oh! what a commotion

And hardly a mention of the Pacific Ocean.

Political posturing, profits and power.

This corporate pipe dream is turning sour.

And the nation is blaming those people of BC

Whose primary concern is the health of the sea.

Should we risk the crustaceans, the whales and the fish

So the captains of commerce may be granted their wish?

What is the profit? What do we gain?

When the oil is spilled and no fish remain?

A nation in turmoil with raw emotion

Awash with political spin and promotion.

So many opinions, suggestions and notions.

What’s really at stake is the world’s largest ocean.

In the Great North Pacific garbage gyre

A bitumen spill would add fuel to that fire.

A spinning vortex of manmade trash

A sewer of plastic, a toxic mash.

Oil money makes our world go round

Polluting the seas and poisoning the ground.

Changing our ways would require something drastic

We’re addicted to oil… our currency is plastic.

An Ocean of Commotion by Ann Maclean

Community Meeting: The Potential Closure of QIMCMore than one hundred Quadra Islanders attended the May 24th meeting to discuss the problems facing QIMC going forward with the retirement of one physician, the transfer of the other to Campbell River and the fate of the NP currently working at the clinic.

While Harbourside Medical clinic is supportive of keeping QIMC running, they have no space to host the NP, laboratory services, or mental health services if QIMC closes.

Dr. Boegel, despite concerted efforts, has not been able to attract a physician to take over the clinic as an owner.

The meeting was held to inform the public of the potential clinic closure and the possible consequences.

Fallout from the clinic closure will be the loss of the NP position along with their services, and the orphaning of approximately 1000 individuals who currently receive their medical care at QIMC. The fate of the laboratory and mental health services is in jeopardy.

Dr. Mary McIntosh stated at the meeting: “We are not the sort of community that is going to passively stand by and let QIMC and its excellent services collapse.”

The committee will continue to meet and lobby government and Island Health to achieve a solution. We will continue to appraise the community of ongoing news.

Please help us by taking the time to write a letter to any or all of the officials below to advocate to keep the clinic open, or volunteer to help in any capacity.

Hello, my name is Sofia McPhee. Welcome to Quadra May Day 2018.

I would like to begin by acknowledging that we are gathered on the traditional territories of the We Wai Kai nation.

I would like to introduce my escort, Malcolm Bakota.

These are my princesses and their escorts: Rosa Pidcock with Keller Brown, Dakotah Richards with Ava Saumier, Kira Abram-Veloso with Brody Balla, Rowan Joiner with Nate Taylor-O’Rourke, and Taiya Savard with Noah Davies.

Wow, can you believe that this is the 120th official May Day? When I think of May Day one of my favorite memories is Maypole dancing. At

the time it might seem like torture, but it is pretty fun. Back in the 50s, 60s and 70s the Maypole dancers’ dresses were made from crepe paper. I wonder what happened when it rained?

Another special memory is when I was in kindergarten. Taiya and I were the flower bearers for our cousin Jaci. I felt so special getting to give her the crown.

One thing I love about May Day is that there are always so many things you can be involved in. Last year was my first time getting to watching the parade, and it was amazing!

When the idea boxes come out for the theme every year it’s always so exciting. When I first heard that this year’s theme was love I imagined a whole bunch of hearts walking down the road, but love is so much more than that. Love is family, friends and our community.

The races are one of my favourite parts of May Day. In the 1930s May Day had all sorts of activities, like a rolling pin toss – and if you won you got to keep the rolling pin. Kind of weird but I like the idea.

I normally don’t like photos of myself but there is one of me when I was 3, it was the first year I could participate in the races. I love that picture because I look so happy.

May Day is my favourite celebration because it brings our community together.

I would like to thank the May Queen selection committee for their time and commitment to May Day.

Thank you everyone for being here today. Have a great rest of your May Day!– Sofia McPhee
