According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Somalia is ranked at the bottom of the countries in the UNDP 2008 Human Development Index list of 179 countries and it is ranked number one in the Fund for Peace index of failed states for the past two years. The south and central regions of Somalia are crippled by conflict and violence, causing large numbers of internally displaced people (IDP). In addition, hazards such as droughts and floods severely affect livelihoods and communities coping mechanisms.

Save the Children’s Presence in SomaliaDuring the 40 years we’ve worked in Somalia we’ve focused on improving children’s health, improving their food intake, helping children get a good education and helping children and families affected by conflict. Together with other NGOs, our advocacy work has focused on getting Western governments and the UN to concentrate on securing humanitarian space and access. Despite a precarious security situation, we’ve been able to

continue our programmes in Puntland, and to implement an emergency response project from the Hiran office. In 2010, Save the Children implemented the ‘Integrated Child Support Emergency Project’ (ICSE) with over $40,000 USD from DANIDA. This DRR program has reached 2,000 children directly and 1,000 indirectly.

DRR & EducationThis project aimed to contribute to the fulfilment of survival, development, participation and protection rights of conflict affected children in Puntland, enhancing children and youth’s skills and capacities in DRR. We delivered life-saving information, messages and activities that were integrated into education activities for children and youth that focus on DRR in response to practical needs of Puntland’s internally displaced people (IDP). Save the Children held DRR workshops in schools and each school was provided with a DRR kit and bi-monthly DRR awareness raising events take place.
