A place of useful learning

The responsibility for making sure that disabled students get what they need to ensure equal access to all that the University has to offer falls on all staff.

Teaching staff are responsible for making any adjustments needed, either within classroom teaching or in assessments.

The Disabled students information system hosted on Pegasus is the agreed medium for conveying recommendations about meeting disabled students’ needs from the Disability Service to academic staff responsible for teaching.

Mainstream inclusion

It is hoped and intended that over time the adjustments recommended, particularly to classroom teaching, will become routine practices, thus over time reducing, if not eliminating, the need for communications about individual students.

Disabled Students’ InformationThis presentation is intended to help you to use the Disabled Students’ Information system, by describing:

where the information comes from

who can read it

how to access the information

Where does the information come from?

The information which takes the form of recommendations and comes from the Disability Service.

The recommendations follow:Discussion between adviser and student about how the disability might affect the student in teaching, learning and assessment;

Discussion about adjustments that might help;

Where does the information come from? The information is supported by evidence of the

student’s disability given to the Disability Service.

The disabled student’s signed explicit consent must be given before the information goes onto Pegasus.

One signature is given to confirm that the information is accurate

and a second signature is required to confirm that permission is

granted to make the information available via Pegasus.

• Check that the recommended adjustments are appropriate, that they are implemented, and that they are effective;

• Tell the student who they can talk to about any problems or issues about exam arrangements.

• A notification email is automatically sent when the student’s information is newly added, updated or removed.

The Disabled Students Requirements information is hosted on PEGASUS (http://pegasus.strath.ac.uk/).You can request access to this service via a Service Request form (USS001) from Information Services or via Request Pegasus Services link within Pegasus Administration tab.

The Disabled students link is available to all users who have permission. You will find this link within the Administration section.

If you have multiple Roles assigned then the first page of the Disabled Students Requirements System is the Role Selection page. The instruction states: “You have multiple special requirement roles assigned to you. Please check and select your choice”. The role options are presented in a table which gives the name of the Role and a description. Once you have made your choice you should press the Select button to proceed.You will only see roles which are assigned to you. The possibilities are:

• Academic Staff/ Assigned Role• Designated Contact• Exam Coordinator• Super User

Print Requirements for hard copies could relate to paper colour, font (typeface, colour and size) and line spacing.

•To support readability when providing PowerPoint hand-outs, ensure that slides can be printed individually and are not restricted to 3 or 6 slides per page.
