Organised by Ankara Film Union, Festival on Wheels began its 22nd annual journey from Ankara in November. After screenings at the capital between November 25December 1, the festival makes its way to Sinop between December 2-4, after which it concludes its journey in Kastamonu between December 5-6. This year, too, there are many surprises in store for festival goers. The Slow Food Movement aims to raise awareness about local food products. Since 2009, Slow Food has organized an assortment of events in Turkey and around the world to celebrate mother nature on December 10, Terra Madre Day. This year, the Yave Gari Local Food Group, which includes supporters of the movement in Turkey, has organized Slow Food-Terra Madre Day IV, which will take place in Bodrum, Milas and Mula from December 5-9 during Turkeys Local Products Week. As part of the event, middle schools, high schools and university faculties in the participating towns will host oncology expert and writer Dr. Yavuz Dizdar for a series of what are expected to be well-attended talks on Fast Food vs Healthy and Local Eating. ROADS AND ROAD TRIPS IN SILENCE

Now in its third incarnation, the International Istanbul Silent Film Festival brings unique examples of silent film to audiences. The festival takes place this year between December 15-18 at Akbank Sanat and the Italian and French Cultural Centres. The famous Italian cinematheque Cineteca di Bologna and the respected Dutch film museum Eye Filmmuseum have partnered with Kino Istanbul in putting together the event, which is divided into various sections focusing on this years theme, Roads and Road Trips. The world-famous international wax museum Madame Tussauds last month opened its twenty-first branch in Istanbul. To date he has acted in more than 100 films and TV series, most of which focused on social issues. In My Fathers Wings, the 2016 film directed by Kvan Sezer, he plays brahim, a construction worker with cancer. For this role, Menderes Samanclar returned with awards from two film festivals, although he says that the films plot alone would be enough to win it awards. Samanclar loves travelling by car and by plane, and when he was a kid, he used to dream about flying. Your role in My Fathers Wings garnered you the Best Male Actor award at two film festivals. Were you expecting this?When I looked back at my performance, I did feel that it was worthy of an award. But the task of handing out festival awards belongs to the jury, and one must always respect their decision. I might not have won an award, but I had hopes.How does it feel to have won 13 awards, including two for you personally?It was a lucky film. It highlighted one of our countrys biggest problems, which is the difficult working conditions of manual labourers. The universal story told by this film was itself reason enough for an award. We set out to raise awareness about this issue, and as a team we think weve succeeded.As part of the preparations for the film, you and the director travelled all over Turkey. What did you run into?I found people who closely resembled the character I was portraying. We visited construction sites in Erci, Van, Istanbul and many other places. I rehearsed with the construction workers. When I came out on set, I knew what my character would do, and how much he would suffer.

Youve donated the awards youve won throughout your life to the Cinema Museum in your hometown, Adana. How many awards have you sent them?Ive given them my 13 grand prizes and various other small awards, along with a 120-year-old hand-cranked film projector that I had had for 35 years. I think its a premature legacy, but an appropriate one. Theyll live on in my homeland, ukurova, long after Im gone.Youve acted in more than 100 films. Do you do anything special when youre preparing for a role?I call it putting on the jacket. I need to empathise with the character Im portraying. I switch places with the character, leave myself at home, and by the time I put on the costume, Im already that man.What convinces you to take on a role?I need to believe in the script. It has to be genuine, have a universal element and appeal to local audiences.Youre also a poet...My poems are letters I write to myself, but other people get to read them, too. After I finish writing them, theyre no longer mine. I would never call myself a poet. Writing poetry is one thing, being a poet is another.Out of all the projects youve done, which have you enjoyed working on the most?Theyre all special in their own way. The other day, we were having a meal at a place by the sea in Karata, Adana, which was where wed shot the 1979 film On Fertile Ground, an adaptation of the Orhan Kemal novel. The film was directed by Erden Kral, and the cast included Erkan Ycel, Yaman Okay, Tuncel Kurtiz and many others. By now, 70 percent of the cast are no longer here. I took a look at the camp where we stayed, the roads we had walked. The strength of the project, the plot, the production process... that film has a special place in my heart. So does My Fathers Wings. And To Hell With It. And The Fog as well. I could go on and list at least 30 films...In another interview, you said you would like to direct a short film. Any developments on this front?Its still my intentions maybe in six months, maybe in another two years. It will be a story from my childhood. Im working on my autobiography, and Im also writing short stories, which Ill turn into a book.

Avustralyada tantmz sz yazar ve besteci Gzde Anel ile yaptmz yzlerce arklk stoumuzdan 20 ark setik ve eleyip on bir arky yeni albmde kullanmaya karar verdik. Avustralyada hazrlanan 1 ie Aktan farkl olarak aranjeleri ve prodksiyonu stanbulda hazrladk. Bu yzden Boazdan, yedi tepeden aldmz ilhamla ilk albme kyasla biraz daha alaturka melodiler, ud, kanun, klarnet sesleri bulunuyor yeni albmde. lk albmnzle alt ayda 21 dl aldnz. Bu adan baktnzda yeni albmnzle ilgili ngrleriniz neler? lk albmde beklenmedik bir hzla ilerledik. kinci albmde de ayn baary bekliyorum diyebilirim. Bestecilik tarafmz biraz daha n planda bu albmde. Your second album, Sahiden, was released in November. What inspired you during its making?In fact, the songs were all ready and waiting. I had met songwriter and composer Gzde Anel in Australia, and we had a huge stock of songs. We picked 20, then got rid of a few until we had decided on 11 songs for the new album. 1 ie Ak was recorded and produced in Australia, but we did my new album in Istanbul. With the Bosphorus and seven hills as inspiration, this album ended up with a more traditionally Turkish sound than the first, with classical melodies and instruments like ud, kanun and clarinet.You won 21 awards in just six months with your first album. How do you think your second album will be received?Everything happened much quicker than I anticipated with my debut album, and I must say I have the same expectations for my second album. The composition stands out a little more on this one. Its a wide-ranging album that can appeal to fans of all styles and ages.Who did you record with?Each song was recorded in a different place. We began the rough drafts with Bahadr Tanrvermi and his production ideas at a home studio and then just made the leap to professional studios. We finished the final stage of sound recording at Sezen Aksus Lonca and Emrah Demiralps Mzikal ler studios and in Cyprus at Yazgn-Aliciks Re-Chord.

The music video for your first single also includes sign language... The idea occurred to me when I was thinking about the script and I wanted even those who couldnt hear the music to get the feel of it. Youve lived in various different cities and countries. How did multi-culturalism affect you and your music?Between the ages of 20 and 30 I travelled around lots of countries and played music. I had the chance to learn about and share world music, especially in multicultural, cosmopolitan cities like London and Melbourne. I shared my culture with musicians from all over the world and fed my soul with their music. I stood under a bridge and played guitar for spare change and performed jazz in the lobby of a five-star hotel for some of the worlds richest people on the same day. My soul matured during this time.What are your favourite cities?Ibiza, Melbourne, Barcelona, and, of course, Istanbul.Are there any countries or cities where you would want to live?Id like to spend a couple of years in New Zealand. I love nature, and the unspoiled, natural beauty would be an inspiration.Are there any cities or countries you would like to visit, but havent had the chance to yet?Egypt and its pyramids.

Sonunda iimdeki retme ve ahap akn dar karmaya karar verdim. Artk tm enerjimi HurdaHane iin kullanyorum.HurdaHane fikri nasl dodu?Ertu: ocukluumdan beri ahaba ve metale zel bir ilgim var. Kullanacak alanm olmadnda bile alet edevat edinmekten haz alrdm. Bir gn Sedann nerisiyle eve, paletlerden sehpa, ayna, bank gibi mobilyalar yaptk. ok beenildi, arkadalardan sipariler gelmeye balad. Sosyal medyada paylatk ve derken iler bu noktaya geldi.Seda: Sosyal medya paylamlarndan sonra apartman snanda kk bir atlye oluturduk. Fakat grdmz ilgi sayesinde ksa srede yerimize samaz olduk. Artk gerek bir tasarm atlyesi ile yolumuza devam ediyoruz. Tasarmlarmz iin Gemiin hatras, bugnn tan ve gelecein ncs tanmn yapyoruz.

First of all, can you introduce yourselves?Seda: I graduated from the Department of Architecture at Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts in 2010. In 2014, together with Ertu, we created the brand HurdaHane, which focuses on interior spaces, and now Im continuing my career in architecture through HurdaHane. Ertu: I graduated from the Department of Calligraphic Arts at Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts in 2010. While I was working on 3D character animations for a post-production company, I continued to be involved with wood and machinery on the side. In the end, I decided to give form to my love of production and my love of wood. From now on, Im devoting all of my energy to HurdaHane.Where did the idea for HurdaHane come from?Ertu: Ever since my childhood, Ive been interested in wood and metal. I would take pleasure in making tools, even if I wasnt going to be using them. One day, on Sedas recommendation, I made a table, mirror, banquette and other furniture for my house using wooden pallets. They got a great response, I started getting orders from friends, we shared them on social media, and that was it. Seda: After sharing on social media, we set up a small workshop in our apartment, but we got so much interest that we quickly outgrew the place. Were now continuing on our way in a real design studio. We define our designs as a reminder of the past, a witness to the present, and a pioneer of the future.

What types of materials do you use in your designs?In general, we prefer old, used wood, which we use in combination with industrial products like pipes, used bicycle wheels and tractor parts. For us, the textures, wear, knots and gaps add a fourth dimension to the products. We refer to this dimension as the soul. It would be easier to work with an unused piece of lumber, but it wouldnt have that same experience. All of the recycling our materials are subjected to is performed completely by our own hands. The greatest motivation for every product that comes out of our workshop is that we witness how stained and broken pieces of wood take on a totally different look after recycling.You say, We dont create products, we create solutions. Is all your work done on commission?We design and produce products in response to requests we get to satisfy our customers needs. Some of these requests give birth to very interesting ideas. I think being an architect prodded me to produce individualized solutions. But our work involves more than just producing objects, we also provide architectural services, and we also offer our architectural clients discounts on our products. Weve got quite a lot of designs that weve produced in addition to our commissioned pieces. For example, when we get a hold of an old bicycle wheel, well ask ourselves,

What can we create out of this?What advantages do your designs have over factory-produced items?The colour, form and size of every product we design is tailored to the individual. This is an important difference. Its impossible for the materials we use for our products to be used in mass production anyway, since they all require recycling, time and craftsmanship.Which of your products attract the most interest?Theres been a lot of interest in the natural acoustic speakers we designed for smart phones. They function as speakers, even though they have no mechanical system inside them, and you can take them with you everywhere. Besides this, weve got pet products like pet-food bowls and beds. Our lighting designs have also attracted a lot of attention.Will you be participating in and exhibiting your designs at any major upcoming events?We were at the Zorlu Center in November within the framework of the Istanbul Design Biennial. In April 2017, were planning on attending Design Week in Milan. Also in April, well have a place at All Design at the Hilton Hotel. In addition to these, weve got the work thats going on in our studio.

For example, the blankets you curl up under while youre stretched in front of the television set in wintertime are an important part of the decor. With their soft textures and appearance, a few afghans thrown over your armchairs will create a warm and comfortable atmosphere. Wool carpets and kilims used in the living room and bedroom add presence with their designs and help you turn your entire home into a warm and inviting nest.

Natural MaterialsPine trees are harbingers of the new year, and small ones will add green to your home. Small TouchesYou can go a long way to adding an up-to-date, lively feeling to your home without expending a lot of effort by making the right choice in terms of lighting. A lamp placed in the living room, bedroom, or even the entranceway can give very effective results. You can also create a nice look by grouping together a few candles of different colours.

For Small SpacesTo turn small spaces into functional, comfortable living areas, start by choosing the correct colour for the walls. By using pastel tones, you can create a larger, more airy look in a small space. If you decide to go with wallpaper, using it on just one wall instead of the entire room will give it a refreshing, decorative appearance. Furniture and accessories are other factors that can help make a room look larger than it really is. Cabinets and closets painted in shades similar to the colour of the walls will blend in with the walls to make the room look larger than it really is. Moscow... where the people are always chicly dressed, where the buildings rise up majestically over boulevards covered with enchanting fairy lights at night, and where the winter show paints the city white... And there, in the centre, is the Kremlin Palace, where you can see traces of Russias history, architecture and political regimes. Built in the 15th century, the Kremlins red-brick towers and fortification walls, the National Armoury, the Palace of the Patriarch and the churches on Cathedral Square are open to visitors. To the east of the Kremlin is the heart of Moscow, Red Square. But not all roads in Moscow lead to this serious looking square; indeed some lead to the not-so-serious Old Arbat, which welcomes hundreds of artists, workers, tourists, the unemployed and the curious into its streets, pavements and cafes every day! If you want to warm up a little and wander around the city, you can get on the metro at the Arbatskaya station and then get off anywhere you like and blend into the crowds of travellers. With their spaciousness, glitter, architecture and artistic works, all of the metro stations are just like museums. If you feel like it, in the evening, take the metro to Park Cultury and have dinner at one of the waterside restaurants in the Neskuchny Garden. As it gets dark, stroll through the enchanting nature to Gorky Park, a wooded enclosure lit up like a winter wonderland. Pick up a pair of ice skates, and ring in the new year together with thousands of Muscovites.
