Foreword

Development, if it is to be successful and sustainable, must be people-centred.

Since its inception, UNESCO, as the organization of intellectual cooperation

of the United Nations System, contributes to such endogenous development

by helping develop the talents and skills of students and researchers whose

ingenuity and capacity for innovation have allowed advances and breakthroughs

in all the fi elds of competence of the Organization.

Consequently, and thanks to the Fellowships Programme, some 50,336

fellows from around the world have been able to study in different countries.

Their experience contributed to the signifi cant forging of strong intellectual

and scientifi c links among peoples, and to the expansion of international

cooperation and understanding. The programme facilitates genuine sharing

and circulation of knowledge and expertise in which, each party, be it teacher

or student, gives to and learns from one another.

The Directory of UNESCO Fellows shows fellowships awarded in the 2006-

2007 period within the framework of both Regular and Extra-budgetary

Programmes. It refl ects UNESCO’s continuing commitment to the development

of human intellectual capacities and international cooperation. It shows the

generous support of which this programme benefi ted during the last biennial

exercise. Adhering to UNESCO’s Constitution, this Programme contributes

to ensure full and equal access to education for all and promotes human

intellect. It encourages cooperation among nations through learning and

mutual understanding.

Avant-propos
