ABOUT HEART & STROKE

Life. We don’t want you to miss it.™ That’s why Heart & Stroke leads the fight against heart disease and stroke. Powered by the commitment and generosity of more than 100,000 volunteers and more than 1.4 million donors, we fund life-saving research and help Canadians lead healthier lives. Heart & Stroke is a health charity active in communities across the country. For more than 60 years, Heart & Stroke has been dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. Our work has saved thousands of lives and improved the lives of millions of others. Our progress is real. The death rate from heart disease and stroke has declined more than 75% over the past six decades. Envisioning this kind of progress was what drove a visionary group of Canadians, including researchers and physicians, to establish the beginnings of Heart & Stroke in 1952.

Heart & Stroke’s health promotion and advocacy programs across the country are saving lives every day. Working together with employees, volunteers, donors, and world-class researchers, Heart and Stroke is Canada’s most widely recognized and trusted authority on cardiovascular and cerebral vascular health. Heart & Stroke and the dedicated researchers and clinicians we support have been generating life-saving knowledge and expertise that has completely revolutionized the treatment and prevention of heart disease and stroke. In 2017 we invested nearly $32 million in life-saving research, and $38 million in advocacy and health promotion initiatives. These highlights show what those investments achieved:

Funding medical breakthroughs – Heart & Stroke supported more than 800 researchers in medical institutes, universities, hospitals and communities across Canada in 2017.

Preventing disease – Heart & Stroke worked to empower Canadians of all ages to learn about and establish healthy lifestyle choices. Our goal is to reduce key risk factors for heart disease and stroke, including high blood pressure, obesity, unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity and smoking.

Saving lives – Heart & Stroke worked to enable faster, better cardiac emergency and stroke response and treatment.

Promoting recovery – Heart & Stroke contributed to increasing quality of life by enhancing supports for an estimated 1.6 million Canadians and their families who are living with the effects of heart disease and stroke.

There’s so much more to do.
