• INDUSTRY - More innovative countries have higher innovation rates in SMALL FIRMS comparing with the European average.

• SERVICES – Innovation rises with the size of the company.

Extent of technological Innovation in Portugal

Portugal has a lower innovation rate compared with theEuropean average, which is supported on:

Portugal doesn´t behave as other european countries, where small companies has the higher innovation rate as well as being the new ones.

Resources allocated to Innovation

The share spent on R&D and the verified Innovation activities can not be directed related in Portugal, due to:

• Considering that 70% of the expenditures are applied in machinery and equipement.

• Human resources can not be directly related in both sectors with innovative activities.

• group 1 and group 2, can not be related, however they have the higher I&D expenditure.

Innovation Objectives

• Mainly, product quality, market increasing and costs reduction, which is shown by the massive investment on machinery and equipement.

• Focused on new products/services, that need an higher inovation rate.

•Industry search for productivity increasing and Services for market expand/wide range of services.

•Europe is more products/services replacement focused.

Cooperation and Innovation Sources

• Information Sources:

- for big companies company internal sources and other companies within the same group.

- company/university cooperation is found at a low level, once that companies doesn´t consider relevant the universities as information source.

- Innovation and cooperation is linked to industry, mainly at the client and supplier level.
