OUR BELOVED BISHOP SPEAKSWHY THE NAME FRANCIS I?

Respected and dear brother-priests, religious and laity,

While the Pope addressed the diplomatic corps in the Vatican City on 22 March2013, he explained the reasons why he chose his papal name, thinking of StFrancis of Assisi, "a familiar figure far beyond the borders of Italy and Europe,even among those who do not profess the Catholic faith. One of the first reasonswas Francis' love for the poor. How many poor people there still are in the world!And what great suffering they have to endure! After the example of Francis ofAssisi, the Church in every corner of the globe has always tried to care for andlook after those who suffer from want, and I think that in many of your countriesyou can attest to the generous activity of Christians who dedicate themselves tohelping the sick, orphans, the homeless and all the marginalized, thus striving tomake society more humane and more just.""But there is another form of poverty", he observed. "It is the spiritual poverty of ourtime, which afflicts the so-called richer countries particularly seriously. It is whatmy much-loved predecessor, Benedict XVI, called the 'tyranny of relativism', whichmakes everyone his own criterion and endangers the coexistence of peoples.And that brings me to a second reason for my name. Francis of Assisi tells us weshould work to build peace. But there is no true peace without truth! There cannotbe true peace if everyone is his own criterion, if everyone can always claim exclu-sively his own rights, without at the same time caring for the good of others, ofeveryone, on the basis of the nature that unites every human being on this earth."Now it is clear why the new Pope formerly called Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglioof Buenos Aires, Argentina has taken the name of St Francis of Assisi, a man whopreached poverty and peace through his words and deeds. Pope Pious XI hascalled St Francis of Assisi "another Jesus Christ."Our Holy Father often rode the bus to work, cooked his own meals and regularlyvisited the slums that ring Argentina's capital.Let us thank and praise the Lord for having given us a simple Holy Father.Let us pray that simplicity, the daughter of grace, the sister of wisdom, the motherof justice may always stand by the side of our Holy Father and help him become"ANOTHER JESUS CHRIST."

BORN : 17-12-1936. He is one of the 5 Children in thefamily of Italian Immigrants.

PARENTS : Mr. Mario Jose Bergoglio: Railway worker.Mrs. Regina Maria Sivori: House wife

ACCADAMIC

QUALIFICATIONS : Masters Degree in Chemistry at the University ofBuenos Aires.

NATIVE COUNTRY : He was from Argentina (South America).

NATIVE PLACE : Bueno Aires. Capital of Argentina.

from 1964 - 1965 he taught literature andPsychology at Immaculate Conception College inSanta Fe.

PRIESTLYORDINATION : 13-12-1969

FINAL

PROFESSION : On 22 April 1973 he made his final profession withthe Jesuits.

From 1973 he was novice master at Villa Barilari,San Miguel; professor at the Faculty of Theologyof San Miguel; consultor to the Province of theSociety of Jesus and also Rector of the ColegioMáximo of the Faculty of Philosophy andTheology.

PROVINCIAL : On 31 July 1973 he was appointed Provincial ofthe Jesuits in Argentina.

EPISCOPALORDINATION : It was Cardinal Antonio Quarracino, Archbishop

of Buenos Aires, who wanted him as a closecollaborator. So, on 20 May 1992 Pope JohnPaul II appointed him titular Bishop of Auca andAuxiliary of Buenos Aires. On 27 May, 1992 hereceived episcopal ordination from the Cardinalin the cathedral.

- On 3 June 1997, he was raised to the dignity ofCoadjutor Archbishop of Buenos Aires.

- After the death of Cardinal Quarracino, hesucceeded him on 28 February 1998, asArchbishop of Buenos Aires.

CARDINAL : On 21-02-2001 John Paul II created himCardinal, assigning him the title of San RobertoBellarmino.

In October 2001 he was appointed GeneralRelator to the 10th Ordinary General Assemblyof the Synod of Bishops on the EpiscopalMinistry.

LIFE STYLE : He is known for his personal humility, andcommitment to social justice.

He lived in a small apartment.

Pope Francis I is the first Jesuit chosen to be thePope.

Pope Francis I is the first Pope from theAmericas- New World.

Pope Francis I is the first Non-European Popesince 1,272. (The last non-European Pope wasSt Gregory III, born in Syria.)

His mother tongue is Spanish. He can speakEnglish, Latin, Italian and German.
