Stepping out in the

Power of the Spirit

Dear All, Welcome to winter—how quickly it has come upon us this year. It has been a busy three months since the last newsletter and it’s hard to remember back to March. Unfortunately I was not able to attend the Area Festival for Southern Flinders but I did attend the Yorke Peninsula Area Festival which was held at Minlaton. have that date in your diary so that we can make our first Willochran Mary Sumner Day a great success. Of course you can also go to the Joining together day at Glen Osmond if you wish. Elizabeth Appleby will be guest speaker and she will be wonderful. I trust that you are managing to sell your raffle tickets. We still have some books left if you feel you can sell a few more. Remember that the proceeds of our Centenary raffle will go to MU projects.

AAAA new daynew daynew daynew day

We feel your power, streaking the sky with

light, as a cool breeze lightens the heavy night, and we feel humble and full of awe. God of creation your new life shoots forth in green and brings with it the promise of things to come, the fruit of growing, knowing, and becoming. Right in this moment your tenderness is as near as silence. Please help us today to do your will. Help us also to keep on knowing deep within our being that we will be forever loved, and forever held securely treasured in your hand.

Though words are not enough

Flo Walters book of simple prayers. Sales of this book have been extraordinary and we have raised to date $311 which has more than covered the cost of printing. From the comments I have heard, everyone has enjoyed reading the simple prayers. You can still purchase a copy from Jane at a cost of $5.00 and no doubt she will have them on display on Mary Sumner Day. Thank you Flo for giving us all the opportunity to share your thoughts and prayers.

Centenary Raffle

Please continue to sell the tickets you were sent by Helen Martin as we need to make as much as we can from this raffle. Please send the money to either Murray Tiver (or bank it directly into our account) or you can send it to me together with the raffle stubs which I need to make the draw. The raffle will be drawn on Mary Sumner Day at Moonta and I would like all the stubs

back by the end of July at

the latest.

KEEP THE DATE

5TH—7TH MAY 2017

MU Australia will be125 years

young. To celebrate a

conference is being held in

Launceston, Tasmania. ALL MU

members and their spouses/

friends are invited to a(end.

At AC last year is was suggested

that dioceses/provinces DO

NOT hold conferences in 2016

so that members are able to

afford to a(end and perhaps

have a holiday either side of

this event. For many members

who are single or widowed this

is an ideal way to travel with

friends and have a wonderful

holiday.

More informaon will be

available from the organising

commiee shortly

From Mission to Seafarers, Ceduna.

Dear Elizabeth

Thank you and your members for the very

generous $200 donaon forwarded to

our Mission. As a voluntary organizaon,

your support means a great deal to us.

We have been very busy over the past

month, moving our Seafarers Centre from

the present locaon to a building in the

Ceduna Anglican Church grounds. The

Australian Mariners Welfare Society gave

us a grant to renovate an old cement

brick building at the rear of the Church

and we hope to move in soonOur Mission

will now have a permanent home close to

the Church and all its facilies.

We opened our centre on the 13th

August last year and in that me we have

transported over 500 seafarers from the

ships to use our free internet service to

contact their families and to assist with

shopping. Seafarers are unable to make

contact with home while at sea.

Thank you once again for your connuing

support.

From Wakefield Area, Marlene Long writes:-

Balaklava branch members are currently doing a bible study entled ‘Journeying

with Christ’, which is based on Mark’s gospel. They recently had a sing-a-long with

residents at Mill Court Nursing home which the residents really enjoyed.

Auburn Riverton branch members recently met with Gawler members and Helen

Sandow and Jean McKinnon. The venue was St Boniface’ church Nuriootpa where

the Eucharist was celebrated by The Rev’d Steve de Kleer, and a7er that, lunch at

the Vine Inn. In June they met with members from St Elizabeth’s church at

Warradale and lunched at Jules’ Café, Riverton.

Helen Marn writes:-

On Wednesday 13th May approximately 30 people

a(ended the SYP Mothers' Union Area Fesval

held at St. Benedict's, Minlaton. The Officers

present were Diocesan President Liz Harris,

Diocesan Secretary Blanche Russ, MU Chaplain

Wendy Cooper, Publicaon Officer Jane Tanner,

Area President Pauline Foy.

In the absence of Minlaton President Lorraine

Rice, Vice President Bev Litster led the procession

of Banners into the Church carrying the Cross.

District Priest Fr Thomas Karama conducted the

Eucharist assisted by Rev'd Anne Ford. The Lesson

was read by Rev'd Wendy Pullin, and Rev'd Wendy

Cooper(MU Chaplain) read The Gospel and

assisted at the Communion. Prayers were given by Rev'd Anne Ford. Fr Thomas

delivered the address on the Gospel of the day relang it to the work of the

Mothers' Union.

Mid Day Prayers were then led by Diocesan President, Liz Harris. lunch was

served aCer the Grace. Following lunch, vising speaker, Rev'd Wendy Pullin,

who is the wife of the late Rev'd Christopher Pullin, a former priest of the

Minlaton Parish, gave an outstanding account of her lone travel from Adelaide to

Darwin using the theme ‘Give Thanks’ about the necessity of being thankful, and

when things are not going well to find something to be 'thankful for' - many

mes of the long journey she was amazed at God's surprises. In closing she

described Walking the Finger Labyrinth as journeying with God.

Helen Marn proposed the vote of thanks and presented Wendy with a small

po(ed Chrysanthemum .

MU Altar Frontal

This is a preliminary sketch of the new altar frontal for the Lady Chapel at the Cathedral, which was displayed on Lady Day. The altar frontal was designed by Helen Pammenter, a MU member at Jamestown for more than 50years and Heather Parker a member of the Peterborough congregation. Both are accomplished artists and together with Heather's husband Des decorated the beautiful cross that is accompanying Bishop White’s staff on the pilgrimage around the Diocese to celebrate the Centenary of Willochra. The frontal has been made by Lyn Duffy, daughter of Bishop Jones third Bishop of Willochra. Lyn and Jan Crawford, members of the Georgetown congregation have made 37 stoles for the clergy to wear at the Centenary Eucharist in the Cathedral on July 26th. Lyn, a skilled needlewoman, has also made a chasuble for the Bishop to wear on that occasion. The design on a white background, features the MU logo with Australia in gold. Either side of the logo are two sprays of wattle representing open hands. Wattle was chosen as it belongs to the Acacia family and represents chaste or pure love. Each spray consists of five stalks representing the five objects of MU. Either side of the Frontal are satin ribbons in colours of the rainbow representing God's promise that there will always be another day and of course also for the PAR publication. The Bishop has approved the design and the dimensions will allow it to be used on the High Altar on MU occasions as well as on the Lady Chapel altar. Mary Catford

Too hard to care?

Wherever we look in our world we see people hurting. We don’t have to look too far afield to discover 8400 employees and their families who have suffered or will suffer as South Australian automotive and associated manufacturing ends. How many other employees and families will be affected as mining companies scale down their operations at various sites such as Roxby Downs? It seems that all over our state the rug has or will be pulled out from under family budgets – and feelings of security have gone. In what may be for many a bleak future mortgages will not be paid, homes will be lost and no doubt already existing issues such as alcohol and drug dependency, gambling addiction, homelessness, and domestic violence will be exacerbated. Recently we heard on the news that the Domestic Violence Task group deals with at least 400 cases of severe domestic violence per week. How many more are there to come as the unemployment rate continues to rise? Further afield there is till the issue of hundreds of children in detention as well as the recruitment in Australia of ISIS brides. If only these young women knew what fate awaits. Little do they know they will be

de-humanised by the jihadists – perhaps raped, auctioned off like cows, forced to engage in brutal sexual practices or be killed. Or there again they might be given away as gifts. What a future! Recently too we were asked do we actually care about the persecuted Rohngya Refugees and their Bangladeshi companions stranded at sea. If our Prime Minister’s response is anything to go by, Australia was not all that interested. With so much pain out there, it would be so much easier to be like ostriches and bury our heads in the sand. However as Christians we are not called to take the easy way out. Indeed we are called

to be actively aware to care deeply to share our concerns with

God and with others….pray, pray, pray. and to not despair –

because in the end God’s justice and mercy will prevail even though we don’t know how or when.

This is an Easter card which I received on behalf of our diocese from Miss K Menon who is the overseas rep for Hereford in our new wave of prayer. She sends love from Hereford Diocesan Mothers' Union. It might be nice if some of our branches responded and perhaps found a branch in this diocese to communicate with in future.
