The Conductor’s Call: “Strengths and Weaknesses” Recently I spoke on “Not letting success go to your head, and not letting failure go to your heart.” The concept of not focusing too much on the negative or the positive, but focusing on serving Christ, by being open to the Spirit leading you. To truly say as Jesus did, even if it meant something negative, “Not my will, but thy will be done.” Well, often times, due to lim-ited time, I cannot go into the kind of detail I would like regarding a sub-ject, so I would like to continue the lesson in this article. Now, regarding success going to someone’s head, scripturally we have the Pharisees. Jesus took their arrogance into account when counseling them. He counseled them differently than His disciples or the average crowd of Israelites. They were the religious leaders, they should have known better. And in some cases, ,they did know better! For them, Jesus reserved His harshest comments, even bringing to light the negative, as He did in Matthew 23, with the 7 woes. Everyone should read this, of course, but successful people, who struggle with success going to their head, should read it much more often. The rich young ruler would he seen as successful today, as would the majority of Pharisees. But as far as God was concerned, they were failing at humility and repentance. So, when Jesus gave them advice or warning, it was time for them to evaluate their current role in His Kingdom. I think we can learn from that as well. There are modern day Pharisees, and they struggle similarly. Scripture only records the names of two Pharisees valuing and benefitting from Christ’s teachings, Nicodemus and Paul, maybe a third in Luke 7, Simon the Pharisee. Others may have followed, but they weren’t named, they seemed to be a group who let success go to their head. Successful in following the letter of the law, but not the spirit of the laws. Successful in earthly finance, but not in heavenly treasure. Jesus said, “You strain out a gnat, but swallow a camel.” They were seen by men as clean ceremonially, even holy through ritual, but God knew they were hypocrites and spiritual frauds. So much so, their very salvation was hanging in the balance. Matthew 23:33 “You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?” But even so, Jesus never gave up on the Pharisees, and He will never give up on you, even if you have let success go to your head. The Pharisees did, Jesus didn’t. Be successful in humility. For some of you, I believe God wants me to challenge you to acknowledge, not focus on, but acknowledge the negative. Because until you see and hear how you have let success go to your head, there’s no room for humility in Christ. Ignoring the negative you need to see and hear, may make you FEEL fine, but you won’t BE fine. Acknowledging and enduring the negative in your life that God wants you to see and hear, brings repentance and perseverance.

Men’s Ministry Moments Synergy, “The sum of the whole is greater than the sum of the parts”. When I first read this statement, I attributed it to the famous British scientist Sir Barnes Wallis. Actually, Aristotle wrote it thousands of years ago. Paul wrote of it in I Corinthians 12, he just used different words. I thought of this while watching the Fijian Rugby seven team win the gold medal at the Olympics. They were unstoppable! They demolished every team that they played. The scores were not even close. All of the players had different strengths and different weaknesses. All of them, working together, had the synergy to defeat all odds. You see, Fiji is a tiny island nation with less than a million people. Yet, they defeated countries with millions of people, and millions of dollars. Truly, a David slaying Goliaths. What was really amazing was watching all of the players worshipping God on the field after the gold medal game. This is a great example of the Body of Christ in action. In I Corinthians 12: 14-26, Paul writes about the Body of Christ, the Church, that we are all a part of. We all have a place in the church. Just as our own body is with its strengths and weaknesses, so too is the church bosy with its strengths and weaknesses. It is not just about our strengths, it is about our weaknesses too. In vs 22, Paul says that weaknesses are neces-sary. In fact, in vs 23, he says that greater honor is bestowed upon the weak. In verses 24-26 he tells us that God has brought us together, with all of our strengths and weaknesses, to become a stronger body. Synergy, “The sum of the whole is greater than the sum of the parts”. Jerry Chang

Now the masses, they tended to let their failure go to their heart. The normal and the outcasts, the “good people” and the prostitutes, the good citizens and the tax-collectors, every one of them were sinners, and they knew it. Jesus saw them as sheep without a shepherd. Jesus encountered them in their homes, on the road, away from the temple, or outside of the synagogues, and He counseled them differently than the Pharisees. With the Pharisees He brought the negative to light by focusing on the truth, they were not successful regard-ing what mattered to God. With others, He brought the positive to light, by focusing on the truth. They were God’s children! The poor were actually therefore rich, inheriting heaven. The tax-collectors could be forgiven. The pros-titutes could leave their life of sin. And the “normal” could live a new life, beyond the mediocrity of just the daily grind. Christ’s focus was always to testify to the truth, whether negative or positive. The focus was always in line with His Heavenly Father’s will and desires. Jesus never gave up on those who had let failure go to their heart. And if you struggle with this, Jesus will never give up on you. Jesus may be encouraging you to acknowledge, not focus on, but acknowledge the positive. Acknowledging and embracing the positive brings about repentance and perseverance. There IS hope. God DOES still love you. Jesus DID die for YOU! Jesus can turn failure into success. If you have strengths, they can be turned into weaknesses, if you let success go to your head. If you have weaknesses, those can be turned into strengths, because Christ’s strength is made perfect in your weakness. There is no more powerful position than a sinner who knows they need Jesus and submits to His lead. If you succeed, give God the glory. He is the truth behind every true success. If you fail at a task, it doesn’t mean that YOU are a failure. Jesus didn’t sin, but even Jesus learned. You are a sinner, but you are also a child of God, and God never stops loving His children. Jesus died for you so He wouldn’t have to live without you. Jesus lives today, so that you don’t have to die without Him. See ya Sunday,

By now, most of you know that the shoeboxes we fill up each year go to children in need around the world. You know that some of these children have never received any type of gift like this before. You know that in the box is the Good News of Jesus. You might even know that each child is given the opportunity to come back for classes to learn more about this Good News. So, each child receives physical gifts that they will cherish or that will meet real physical needs, but they also receive a spiritual gift that can last for eternity. But, did you know that your shoe box fees also cover the costs of leaders’ materials and training for the teachers in that area? Did you know that the children can bring friends and family members? Are you starting to see the effect that one little shoebox can have on our world?! Think about being involved in this ministry this year by packing a box and/or covering the shipping costs for a box. Collect items for boxes and/or plan to come to the next packing party in October. Think about volunteering in our Relay Station in November. Commit to pray for each person that touches a shoebox. YOU can make a difference.
