3 Types and dimensionsThread inserts shall be made from rhombic wire to form a spring-type helical coil. They are classified into typeA inserts, for M2 to M39 and M8 × 1 to M39 × 3 screw threads (cf. figure 1), and type B inserts, with the internalcross section taking the form of a centric polygon and with a locking function, for M2,5 to M24 and M8 × 1 toM33 × 2 screw threads (cf. figure 2).NOTE: Locking is achieved by an increased frictional contact in the thread, preventing the bolt in the connec-

tion from working loose, this resulting in an increased torque when screwing in the bolt.Thread inserts shall be provided with a notch (as shown in figures 1 and 2) permitting removal of the tang afterfitting.

*) At present at draft stage.

3.1 Nominal lengthThe recommended nominal length of a thread insert is a function of the workpiece material, and the propertyclass of the bolt or the yield strength of the bolt material (cf. table 1).

4 Technical delivery conditions4.1 MaterialsThread inserts shall be made of work-hardened grade A2 austenitic steel with a Vickers hardness from 425 HV 02to 550 HV 0,2 as specified in DIN EN ISO 3506-2 or of work-hardened CuSn6 alloy with a minimum Vickershardness of 260 HV 0,2 as specified in DIN EN 28839.For applications in a highly corrosive environment, work-hardened grade A4 austenitic steel with a Vickershardness from 425 HV 02 to 550 HV 0,2 as specified in DIN EN ISO 3506-2 shall be used.

4.2 Surface roughnessFor the surface roughness of thread flanks, the specifications for rolled screw threads given in DIN 267-2 shallapply.

4.3 Axial proof loadThread inserts with a nominal length as specified in table 1 shall have a design proof load equal to the minimumbreaking load specified in DIN EN ISO 898-1 *).

4.4 Prevailing torqueThe prevailing torque shall be as specified in DIN EN ISO 2320. 5)

4.5 Test temperatureTesting shall be carried out at ambient temperature.

4.6 FinishThe surface of thread inserts shall be bright, except for type B inserts, where it shall be red.

5 DesignationDesignation of a thread insert of type A, for thread size M6, made of grade A2 steel and with a nominal length,l1, of 12 mm:

Thread insert DIN 8140 – A M6 × 12 – A2

If thread inserts are to be supplied with left-hand thread, the symbol LH shall be included in the designation(cf. DIN 962).

EXAMPLE: Thread insert DIN 8140 – A M6 LH × 12 – A2

6 Service temperaturesThread inserts as specified in this standard are designed for use at temperatures in the range from –40 °C to+300 °C.

7 User information7.1 Core holeCore hole diameters (d2) are given in tables 2, 3, 4 and 5. The core holes should not be countersunk, since tappedholes without countersink facilitate the introduction of the thread inserts.Where countersinking is indispensable (e.g. in the case of sealing faces that cannot be finished), the maximumcountersink diameter shall be equal to the major diameter of the tapped hole.

7.2 Tapped holeThe dimensions and limits of size of the tapped hole shall be as specified in DIN 8140-2. For the manufactureand gauging of tapped holes, special screwing taps and plug gauges shall be used.

7.3 Internal threadThe internal thread provided by the thread insert shall have class 6H tolerances. Special tools are required forintroducing the thread insert.

For *), see page 2.5) No prevailing torque has been specified for coarse pitch threads of sizes M2, M2,5 and M3,5 and fine pitch

threads of sizes M12 × 1, M14 × 1,25, M24 × 1,5, M26 × 1,5, M30 × 1,5, M36 × 2, and M39 × 2.

Explanatory notesDIN 8140-1 and DIN 8140-2 have been prepared on the basis of standards published in other countries(e.g. British Standard BS 4377), standards issued by the Normenstelle Luftfahrt (Aerospace Standards Com-mittee), and works standards of a number of German manufacturers, the aim being to harmonize the specifi-cations for tapped holes, the associated tolerances, and the product specifications for thread inserts.Users of this standard should note the following.

a) Tolerance class 6H as specified here is the tolerance class for the thread insert after assembly. However,in DIN 8140-2, the tolerance class for the pitch diameter of the tapped hole has been denoted as 6 Hmod toindicate that the tolerance values deviate from those given in DIN ISO 965-1. These ‘modified’ values arealso specified in other national standards and works standards.b) Although tolerance class 4H ‘fine’ is specified in aerospace standards for thread inserts, such narrowtolerances are both impractical and unnecessary for general applications.c) Tables 3 and 5 of this standard include a number of screw threads which do not conform with series 1threads as specified in DIN 13-1 and DIN 13-3 and the use of which is not recommended. In DIN 8140-2, theassociated tapped holes, the use of which is also not recommended, have been listed in a separate table. This table also specifies a number of tapped holes for which no inserts have been standardized, as they arenot commonly used. These tapped holes have nevertheless been included in DIN 8140-2 in order to providespecifications for the user of such screw threads.d) This standard gives examples for the indication of thread inserts and tapped holes on drawings. Inter-national Standard ISO 6410-2 : 1993, which has been approved as a European Standard, also deals with thissubject.
