Sesquicentennial Mural Takes Shape
Shepherd Sesquicentennial
Joyce Bleecker and her studentsare making excellent progresson the Sesquicentennial muraldespite the challenges of strongwinds, sun, and scheduling con-flicts. When I stopped by Mrs.Bleecker was showing one of herart students how to use tape tomaintain the outline of a build-ing. They were working on theright side of the train car where
a stack of pancakes were alreadyclearly visible. On the left sidethree students were painting theface of Shepherds founder, ahorse, and the wheels of an oldcar.
The mural, a project beingsponsored by both the Chamberof Commerce and the Sesqui-centennial Planning Committee,is based on designs which weredeveloped by Mrs. Bleeckers

art students in the late spring. She brought her favorites to aSesquicentennial Planning Com-mittee meerting for approval. The designs were so well donethat Mrs. Bleecker used elementsfrom the best ones and histori-cal photos of Shepherd to createa collage of images from Shep-herds past.
Mrs. Bleeckers next step was toadjust the mural design so that itwould proportionally fit onto theold train car in front of the TrainDepot museum. She did this bychanging the design by hand andalso projected the prototype ontothe train car itself to get a betteridea of how well the two wouldline up.
As I watched the students workon their pieces of the mural, I
began to understand why the artteacher had said that the muralwould go through a lot of chang-es as it was transferred onto thetrain car. The mural was truly acollaborative effort between theart students and reflected manydifferent styles. As Mrs. Bleeckerhad predicted, the mural hadbeen through a great deal ofchange during the painting pro-
cess.
The group is working steadily, and Mrs. Bleecker hopes thatmore students will join in to helpalong the way. At the rate theyare going, there shouldnt be anyproblems finishing the mural intime for the Shepherd Sesqui-centennial celebration in August.Additional updates and photos are
available online at http://traindepot-
