ACoralReefshowslifeandbreathwithouthavingaface.Itisarigidstructurewithnocontrolofthemovementofitstentacles.ThepathofcurrentsintheGreatBarrierReefinthePacificOceanvarygreatly.Theycauseaneverchangingandconstantmovementonthefloor.Thecreaturestendtoberesponsivebutnotconscioustothelifearoundthem;similartophototropism.SeaAnemonesbecomeavolumetric,habitablespacewithlotsofmovementandahometosome. Thebasicstructureofatentaclewascreatedfromaspline.Itfollowstherulethatifthesculptureisthinanddenselypackedthenthetentacleisclosetoitsbaseandshort.Ifitisopenandwidethenthetentacleisstandingtall,longandangledouttothesidetoindicatefreemovement. Thewholespaceisaphysicalexperiencewheresomebodycanfeelasiftheirmovementthroughthespaceandaninvisiblecurrentiswhat’scausingthetentaclestomovehowtheyare.Thestructureandmaterialsofthetentaclearemeanttobelightandfluidtocreatemovementeventhroughanon-movingsculpture.Likeafishisdrawntotheanemoneforprotection,avisitorisdrawntothesculpturetoexperiencemovementthroughthespaceandinteractwithit.

“Tentacles”arecreatedoutofclearacrylictubesandshapedintoaspline.Theycanthenbelitupattheendsothattheoverallstructurecomestolife.
Asolidmetalrodsupportstheend(ormiddledependingonthelength)oftheacrylicshapeandhelpsitkeepitsshape.
Compression&Release:Asthestructuremovesacrossthespacethe“tentacles”growlonger,lifthigher,anddevelopmoreofafree-flowingangle.Thedensitydecreasesasthestructuregetswider,similartoaseaanemoneincalmwater.
