PASTORAL LETTER – JUNE 2016 PRAYER At the last meeting of the Discussion Group the topic was “Prayer”. A very interesting, informative and sometimes challenging, discussion ensued in which everyone participated. It was agreed that within the Christian life and journey prayer was a “good” thing, indeed it can be considered to be an essential requirement. It was acknowledged that although people pray in different ways, as it is a very personal thing, most prayers will include some or all of the elements of adoration, confession, thanksgiving and petition. One description of prayer is that it is a conversation with God, this implies therefore a two way process. You are talking to God, perhaps thanking Him for the gift of a bright sunny early summer morning. For me this is the easier part of the process, the more difficult part being the listening bit, listening for what God has to say. I think this will involve me setting aside a time for quiet reflection, stillness and silence, thinking about the glory and truth of God and the wonders of His universe, and then listening for that small voice. Others will, of course, have different ways of praying and conversing with Him. I would like to finish by quoting, as I did at the Discussion Group, from St. Therese of Liseiux: “For me, prayer is an aspiration of the heart, it is a simple glance directed to heaven, it is a cry of gratitude and love in the midst of trial as well as joy. It expands my soul and unites me to Jesus.” Colin Ritchie.

BOOK REVIEWS Title:- Church Chuckles, amusing anecdotes from a church minister Author:- Reverend John Carrier. John’s writes about “funny moments” from his arrival at Theological College and on through his life. It is an interesting and amusing insight into moments in a minister’s work life What makes it especially interesting to us is that we know John, as he and his wife Marjorie, have kindly lent us the Nativity Exhibition for the past 2 years and they live in Leamington Spa.

Also in the library is a copy of the book produced for the Queen’s 90th birthday

Title:- The Servant Queen and the King she serves Authors:- Mark Greene and Catherine Butcher The book includes a forward by Her Majesty. It is a great insight into the depth of the Queen’s faith that has underpinned her time as our Monarch.

DEATH. Sadly, David Steen died on April 27

th after a long struggle with ill health.

His Memorial Service was held here in Abbey Hill Church on Friday 20th

May, following a committal service earlier. It was nice to see so many church and Tannery Court friends at the service. Exams To all those sitting exams in any shape or form in the next few weeks, very best wishes from everyone at Abbey Hill URC. It can be a difficult time not only for those sitting the exams but for their families as well! CONGRATULATIONS. Congratulations go to Rosemary and Gerald’s son Michael who has passed his ambulance technician’s exam towards becoming a fully qualified paramedic next year. Congratulations also go to Helen Green’s son Andrew. He runs his own business which has just been awarded the Queens Award for Enterprise. WELCOME. For several weeks now, two couples new to our congregation have been worshiping regularly with us. They are Robin and Jill Lough-Scott who were married in Abbey Hill Church 52 years ago and have returned recently to the area, and Andy and Vera Cooper who have moved to Leamington from Cambridge to be nearer their daughter and family. We welcome them to our midst and look forward to them joining us in our activities.

One thing all nations have in common is the ability to see each others’ faults!

Anon. Please let Pat Cowan know in person or on 01926 313904, of any Pastoral Care concerns.

Bassem’s Story

I read about Bassem in the recent “Child Matters” which is from UNICEF and, as I have a nephew called Bassem and a grandson the same age as this Bassem, I thought you might be interested to read his story. In the unlikely surroundings of Za’atari refugee camp in Jordan 15 year old Syrian Refugee Bassem is on his way to becoming a wrestling star. It is 5 years of bitter conflict in Syria and Bassem recalls how his life has been turned upside down by a war that has caused untold human suffering. “Life became very dangerous. Bombs and missiles were exploding everywhere and we were very scared” Bassem’s mother was killed just a few months after the conflict began and he and his remaining family fled over the border to neighbouring Jordan. Bassem was so traumatised that he became withdrawn and angry. But thanks to the help he receives through the Unicef-supported Adolescent Friendly Space at the refugee camp he is starting to regain his confidence. “The camp is protected and I feel safe. I really like it here. Coach Mohammed makes us laugh and helps us to forget our troubles.” Every day, before school, Bassem comes to Coach Mohammed’s wrestling class. Mohammed is a former wrestling champion from Syria and says “What they have come from is one of the most brutal conflicts of our generation. If a child has witnessed violence then I have to release this violence or negative energy through training.”

Crooked politicians

The editor of a small country newspaper, furious over several

government bills that had recently been passed, printed a scathing

editorial with an enormous headline: "HALF THE LEGISLATORS ARE

CROOKS."

Many local politicians were outraged and exerted tremendous

pressure on him to print a retraction. He finally gave in to the

pressure and ran his apology with the headline: "HALF OF OUR

LEGISLATORS ARE NOT CROOKS."
