T T he lower lev el of the Dexter Distri ct Library was converted into an island safari Friday when traveling animal expert Nelson “Animal Guy” Pearson visited. Pearson, an animal expert and owner of Wildlife Safari, brought an array of exotic animals for childre n and parents to touch and see. “I want to make it magical and mysterious,” Pearson said. “I want to be like the Willy Wonka of sci ence.” While there may not have been any geese laying golden eggs, Pearson did show the youth some rare animals for Michigan. Pearson started with a grand demonstration of animals found in a tropical environment: a toucan, python, armadillo and even an alligator. He had volunteers come up and feed his toucan and also to hold a python. He took this time to educate people a little bit about each animal. “Just because you see bad stuff about pythons on TV doesn’t mean they’re all bad,” he said. “I’ve always wished I could talk to animals,” Pearson told the kids, “but I discovered that in order to talk to animals, all you have to do is listen to them; try to figure out what they are say- ‘Animal guy’ wows Dexter kids with exotic animals By Kevin Doby Heritage Media Dexter resident killed in ATV accident By Art Aisner Special Writer A Dexter man died when his all terrain vehicle struck a fence along Riker Road in Dexter Township early Sunday morning, police said. Wash tenaw County Sheriff ’s deputies responded to the area of Riker Road nea r Orchard Ridge Road for an unknown crash involving an ATV at about 1:45 a.m., a news release stated. They located the victim, a 23-year-old Dexter man, and helped paramedics with Huron Valley Ambulance transport him to the University of Mic higan Medical Center. The victim, identified as Richard Francis Scannell III, died from significant injuries at the hos- pital. Scannell, of Dexter, was a native of Smit htown, N.Y ., but graduated from Dexter High School in 2005, according to an obituary submitted by his family. The avid outdoorsman completed Schoolcraft Fire Academy in 2006 and worked as a roofer for several years. He is survived by his mother, Leslie Scannell , of Dexter , and sisters Dakota and Sydnee. The initial investigation showed the ATV was traveling parallel to Riker Road with a group of other off-road riders . His vehicle collided with a fence and overturned several times, police said. A 22-year-old male passen- ger, also from Dexter, was not injured in the accident. The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s traffic division. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the department’s confidential tip- line at 1-734-973-7711, or contact Deputy Michael Williams at 1-734-973-4391. The Dexter Area Fire Department assisted at the scene. Visitation for Scannell is Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. and the funeral is planned for 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21 at the Staff-Mitchell Funeral Home, located at 901 N. Main St., in Chelsea. A luncheon is planned at Katie’s Pub in Dexter imme- diately following services. A Dexter man died whenhis all terrain vehicle strucka fence along Riker Road in
