A white uniform is worn; the colour of the stripes is determined by length of sentence. Slippers are also provided.

Shoes can be purchased at the prison shop. In exceptional circumstances foot wear can be purchased outside the prison, but special permission must be granted before hand and only after a medical certificate has been provided by the doctor.

Food

Three free meals are provided a day. During Ramadan non-Muslims get three meals and Muslims just two meals. Meals consist of a varied local menu. Additional food can be purchased at the canteen which is open every day in the morning. However there may be a schedule for different ambers/block of cells.

Visitors are not allowed to bring food in to the prison.

Water from the canteen can be taken to ambers/cells. Personal Belongings

Books can be supplied but must first be approved by the National Media Council.

MP3 players or other personal devices are not allowed.

Prisoners are not allowed to keep electrical items with them but permission can be obtained for certain items to be used under supervision.

Medication

Medication prescribed in the UK is not allowed. Detainees must get approval from the prison doctor for any medication.

Visiting

Public:

Friday (for non-Brits) & Saturday mornings: 08:00 – 11:00 (male visitors).

Friday (for non-Brits) & Saturday afternoons: 14:30 – 16:00 (female visitors).

Private:

Prisoners with drugs related charges are no longer allowed face to face private visits. The visits will be conducted behind a glass barrier. Financial cases are the same. Only at the discretion of the Head of the Central Prison can prisoners have face to face private visits (permission is usually given to close members of family and lawyers).

Private visits are allowed once every two months

The detainee will need to fill a form registering the names of people who he/she would like to see.

Visitors will need to complete a form prior to the visit for each occasion.

Exceptional visits are considered but must be applied for in advance.

Note: Visiting times differ during the holy month of Ramadan. Money

Detainees can receive large amounts of money (e.g. AED 5,000/10,000), but they can only access a maximum of AED 1,200 every month or a maximum of AED 400 per week. If more money is required for telephone calls or to purchase food from the canteen, prisoners will need to complete a request form.

The detainee is not given cash. They are provided with a rechargeable debit card.

The detainee can only receive money from friends and family but they must be the same nationality. Alternatively, the detainee can receive money via Western Union or the British Embassy.

Library: Prisoners can borrow books from the library. There are no timescales for returning the books but prisoners need to give their name and prisoner’s number to the library officer beforehand.

Workshops/Training: Only prisoners who have been sentenced can participate in a workshop. This attracts a small salary.

Doctor/Dentist/Hospital: A nurse visits on daily basis and takes the names of those who need to see the doctor. If the patient requires a dentist or a visit to hospital, the doctor at the clinic sends a letter requesting an appointment.

Telephone Calls: Telephones are available for two hours a week. If prisoners need to make additional calls they can purchase a telephone card from the office.

Barber: A barber is available daily. Long hair is forbidden; once a prisoner has been sentenced he must have his hair cut. Prisoners are allowed to have some shaving equipment but nothing with razor blades.

Mail can be sent direct to detainees through the Dubai Police Headquarters using the following address:

From there, mail will be delivered to the police station although it may take several days for it to be delivered.

Mail can be sent via the British Embassy or via Country Casework Team at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London.

Prisoners Abroad also provide freepost envelopes for detainees. Deportation

Once a prisoner has completed their sentence, the security office starts the procedures for deportation. This includes booking an airline ticket, finger printing and an iris scan. This process normally takes a minimum of one week.

Lawyers:

Lawyers can visit detainees on Wednesday and Thursday. Visits outside of these times are possible but at the discretion of the police station.

Facilities

Library: Prisoners can borrow books from the library. There are no timescales for returning the books but prisoners need to give their name and prisoner number to the library officer beforehand.

Workshops: Sentenced prisoners can participate in a workshop which attracts a small monthly salary.

Medical: A nurse visits on daily basis and takes the names of those who need to see the doctor. If the patient requires a dentist or a visit to hospital, the doctor at the clinic needs to send a referral letter to Medical Services or to Al Qasimi and Al Kuwaiti Hospitals.

Telephone calls: prisoners are allowed to have up to five numbers saved in their system. The prison authorities have said that the prisoners can call each of the numbers daily and for each call, they can have up to 15 minutes every day no matter what the charge is.

Barber: A barber is available daily. Long hair is forbidden and once a prisoner has been sentenced he must have his hair cut short. Prisoners are not allowed to have shaving equipment in their accommodation.

Deportation

Once a prisoner has completed their sentence, the security office checks with the ‘Wanted’ department to check for any outstanding charges. If they have none, they will be taken to the deportation section while the officers start the deportation procedures, which will include booking an airline ticket, finger printing and iris scan. This process normally takes a minimum of one week.
