Anwar el-Sadat president of Egypt decided to end their relationship with the Soviet Union and start a new one with the US

When Nixon and Kissinger ignored him, Sadat decided to get their attention by launching a surprise attack across the Suez canal on the US ally Israel

According to the basic principles agreement how should the two superpowers react?

USA supplied Israel with arms.

Rebuffed a demand for Brezhnev for a jointly enforced cease fire

Kissinger then personally negiated an end to the hostilities, gaining gratitude in both Egypt and Israel

1974 Ford and Brezhnev began and agreed in principle to SALT II in Vladivostok

Agreement was made on certain areas ofmissile deployment but areas were also left out

The US right began to believe that the USA were giving too much away especially in

areas such as cruise missiles

This linked with increasing SU activity in Africa made many see the USas giving in and being weak on communism allowing them to expand

SALT was signed in Vienna in 1979

It was a very complicated Treaty and withthe SU increasingly taking an active role

in other areas and the invasion of Afghanistan, Congress refused to ratify the

agreement – SALT was dead!!!
