Innovation Strategy
Carpet is our link between mankind and architecture. It is the layer that enables us to have a positive influence on the world: to stimulate the senses, to shape perceptions of buildings and to meet the needs of society.
All Desso products are distinguished by the synergy of these three pillars. Creativity, Functionality and Cradle to Cradle®.
Today, most people spend on average 90% of their time indoors. At home, in the office, whilst travelling, staying in hotels and so on. Based on this insight, we use our innovation strategy to give substance to our company vision: ‘How to make the Floor work for our Health and Wellbeing’.
Innovation Strategy
Our Fundamentals
Creativity
Design excellence is a priority for us across all our business divisions. We are inspired by the latest trends in areas such as fashion, architecture, art and interior design. Next to that we want to stimulate co-creation of stunning new designs either via our international Circles of Architects® platform or by successful partnerships with leading architects and designers.
Functionality
Pioneering solutions that lead to healthier and happier living and working conditions.
Through this process, we ask what can our carpets do to improve health and well-being, leading to innovations such as the DESSO AirMaster® and SoundMaster®, carpets that reduce the amount of fine dust in the indoor atmosphere and unwanted noise.
Cradle to Cradle®
We are passionate about creating products that have a positive impact on people’s health today inside their homes and offices and that also contribute to a more sustainable business model in the future.
We achieve this through Cradle to Cradle® design.

Live Sessions
When you throw a stone into water, something happens. The displacement creates ripples, like an idea spreading wider and wider.
That’s the effect of Circles of Architects®; an international concept which Desso first launched in 2007.
In these sessions, we look at spatial use and carpet applications from a wider perspective by creating an active dialogue with architects and designers.
Circles of Architects® is a platform dedicated to exploring and answering these needs.
Circles of Architects® community
www.circlesofarchitects.com Desso has extended the Circles of Architects® concept with an online platform for interior architects and designers. This web community focuses completely on architecture, design, innovation, product development as well as the Cradle to Cradle® concept.
www.facebook.com/circlesofarchitectsThe Circles of Architects® website is also linked to Facebook to ensure people have the opportunity to engage with us and each other on a regular basis. The Circles of Architects® Facebook page can also be a source of inspiration as it also features news about architecture, design, fashion, art, upcoming talent, seminars and exhibitions.

Design CenterTM
Creativity is crucial to Desso. Combined with our understanding of the needs of our individual customers, creativity enables us to deliver carpets that have the greatest impact whether that is creating an inspiring workplace or a calm atmosphere for learning in schools or patients recovering from illness in the health sector.
The international Circles of Architects® network, founded by Desso, is focused on engaging architects and designers in face to face conversations and online networking. This provides us with inspiration, new insights into markets and trends and finally leads to co-creations of innovative and stunning carpet designs.
Co-creation with architects and designers is essential within Desso’s design process. Through Desso’s Design Center™, architects and designers can now be part of the design and production process and make full use of our team’s expertise in these fields.
Desso sees this as a two-way process where the role of each party will strengthen that of the other to deliver new and innovative carpet designs.

CARPETECTURE®
CARPETECTURE® collections
CARPETECTURE® is a new way of thinking, incorporating elements from modern international architecture to create emotionally expressive carpet designs. It is inspired by changes in architecture and by how people think about space, atmosphere, colours and materials.
When changes in architecture are used to inspire carpet designs there is synergy. The carpet becomes more than a floor covering, it performs alongside other architectural elements. Intensifying the sensation. As part of the theme Desso already has several collections: Pure Lines, Core Structures and Colour Dimensions I & II, Patterns@Play and Materials in Touch.
The latest collection is Transitions.

Transitions
Desso’s Transitions collection reflects our ever-changing times. We live in an increasingly fast moving era that is constantly evolving offering endless oppor-tunities, but one which also demands great flexibility and responsiveness from people and places – in all areas of life.
Transitions embraces movement and changes in colour, structure and nature. The collection consists of carpet tile products, which all allow for great creative freedom. It encourages schemes that boost both physical and aesthetical movement and which support the need to accommodate the diverse range of activities and functions demanded in today’s world.
Fuse products, especially when combined with corresponding Fields colours, provide a platform to express individuality and to animate and zone large expanses of floor by either contrasting or cleverly blending colours. This can be achieved by creating dramatic and eye-catching centre pieces – or by building stunning design bridges transitioning from one colour to the next creating an overarching theme and feel.
Pebble and Wave, on the other hand, offer a more quiet and organic flooring scheme - yet still reflecting our transitional times. Using themes of nature, these carpet tiles recreate subtle primal patterns designed to provide a more tranquil office environment by adding softer movement to the interior scheme.
The first products of Desso’s Transitions collection will be launched in Autumn 2014:

DESSO AirMaster®
Since we spend on average more than 90% of our time indoors, the air quality inside is of the utmost importance. The presence and size of particulate matter (PM) or fine dust is a determining factor in air quality and is directly linked to potential health problems.
With the introduction of DESSO AirMaster® the benefit of carpet solutions is taken to the next level. Its patented technology has been specially developed to capture and retain hazardous particulate matter. In fact, DESSO AirMaster® is 8 times more effective in capturing and retaining fine dust than hard flooring and 4 times more effective than standard carpet solutions (PM10), making it the most effective flooring solution to capture fine dust from the air.*
* Based on tests performed by GUI, with DESSO AirMaster® versus standard PVC hardfloor and versus standard structured loop pile carpet.
How fine dust (particulate matter) enters your body
1 Particulate matter enters our respiratory (lung) system through the nose and throat.
2l3 The larger particulate matter is eliminated through coughing, sneezing and swallowing.
4 Smaller particulate matter can penetrate deep into the lungs. It can travel all the way to the alveoli, causing lung and heart problems and delivering harmful chemicals to the blood system.

Light Reflection Master®
Our Fundamentals
DESSO Light Reflection Master®
Light is one of the basic elements that make life possible. Not just at home but also at work, the presence and intensity of light is essential for people to be able to function properly. It leads to better performance because it raises our concentration levels and boosts our productivity. Light also has a positive impact on work satisfaction and sick-related absenteeism. In addition, light ensures that the risk of accidents in the workplace can be significantly reduced*. However, the amount of energy we consume for our lighting increases every year**. In some buildings lighting is the largest single category of electricity consumption. For office buildings in Europe it accounts for as much as half of the building’s total energy use**.
The floor, usually one of the largest surfaces in a room, can make a big difference to the amount of light reflected. To capitalise on this potential, Desso’s product designers developed the DESSO Light Reflection Master® - a carpet collection that reflects more light and can reduce lighting energy costs. Using less energy for lighting also helps organisations to cut down their energy related CO2 emissions. The use of DESSO Light Reflection Master® can increase the brightness of a room by up to 14% and can reduce lighting costs by up to 10%***.
DESSO Light Reflection Master® is the carpet that gives you energy.

and the general nature of the surroundings.

Luminous CarpetsTM
End 2013 Philips and Desso announced a partnership agreement to develop solutions that combine LED lighting with light transmissive carpet. This innovation will further unlock the potential of LED integration into surfaces and adds an exciting dimension to interior design and space planning. The solution will transform the way people interact with information and their environment in offices, hotels, conference centres and other public buildings.
These LED light emitting carpets will provide many benefits in the areas of information, direction, inspiration and safety, such as:
• Guiding people around buildings, including safety exits and routes.• Enhancing the ambiance and atmosphere of the interior of buildings combining lighting with design and colour• Helping to de-clutter spaces by making information visible only when needed.
The solution is designed for high traffic areas and comes in different colours, shapes and sizes- enabling highly flexible application of the new technology. It engages directly with people’s senses and the eyes’ natural inclination to seek out light. The technology takes advantage of people’s tendency to be guided by the floor when moving through and interacting with space. It brings information, direction, inspiration and safety via the carpet you walk on.

Taking the road less travelled
Our Fundamentals
Taking the road less travelled Many people have asked us why we took the giant step to go from sustainability to Cradle to Cradle®. To answer this question, we have to look at the main differences between sustainability and Cradle to Cradle®.
Often, sustainability starts by evaluating the impact of a material or an activity on the environment, and then tries to minimise those impacts. But in following this approach, you could be optimising the wrong things – trying to do less of a bad thing.
Cradle to Cradle® starts by defining the ‘perfect’ product based on user requirements and functionality and by applying the three Cradle to Cradle® principles: waste equals food, use current solar income and celebrate diversity.
When any business is planning its sustainability strategy it must answer the following two questions and decide which direction to take.
Is your target to achieve zero impact? Or is your target to achieve maximum positive impact?
If the answer is zero impact, you will be designing a product focused on doing less harm with current methods.
If you adopt the quality approach, you will be designing products that are built to have a positive impact on the environment.

Our Fundamentals
Our Fundamentals - Cradle to Cradle® 43
Cradle to Cradle®
Our Fundamentals
Cradle to Cradle®
The central idea of Cradle to Cradle®, created by German chemist Prof. Dr. Michael Braungart and the US architect William McDonough is to design healthy, circular material flows – either biological or technical.
The Cradle to Cradle® philosophy calls for a new way of looking at the manufacturing design process to ensure that goods do no harm to human health or the ecology of the planet.
Cradle to Cradle® is not about recycling for the sake of it. The use of positively defined* material which is safe for human use is at the heart of this philosophy. This means the process is focused on the kinds of chemicals used in the materials that make up the products as well as making sure they are designed so they can be disassembled at the end of the product life cycle.
The founders of this philosophy (Prof. Dr. Braungart and architect W. McDonough) respect the environmental goals of eco-efficiency (reducing or reusing waste, for example). But they add that it is better to design something that is 100 per cent good instead of trying to minimise the impact of something that was not designed as well. This goal of improving design lies at the heart of the Cradle to Cradle® philosophy, referred to by Braungart and McDonough as ‘eco-effectiveness’.
Cradle to Cradle® philosophy recognises that we all create an impact on the world we live in. The challenge is to make this impact beneficial for current and future generations.
* Positively defined = all ingredients have been assessed as either Green (optimal) or Yellow (tolerable)
according to the Cradle to Cradle® assessment criteria. As described in the Cradle to Cradle® Certification
Program Version 2.1.1, prepared by MBDC September 2008, updated January 2011.

Desso has been making a difference with Eco-efficiency for years. We have never lost sight of the fact that our goal was to minimise our impact on the environment. Listed below are some examples of what we do in the area of eco-efficiency:
32% reduction in energy consumption per carpet tile produced from 1998-2013 in Waalwijk, the Nether-lands.
100% recycling of pure textile manufacturing waste at Desso’s production plants.
In 2013, 98% of all packaging materials were recycled.

Cradle to Cradle®
Our Fundamentals
Eco-effectiveness
As part of our Cradle to Cradle® strategy, we want to go a step further with Eco-effectiveness. As mentioned earlier, this approach is all about creating products that are designed to have a positive impact on the environment. These are some of the steps we have already taken:
44% CO2 reduction between 2007-2013 for the total company.
The amount of renewable electricity used at Desso accounted for 26% in 2013, up from 7% in 2008 and from zero in 2007.
Self-generated energy: 25,000m2 roof covered by solar cells generating 3.674 GJ Solar energy in 2013.
100% biological purification of our process water in Dendermonde.
Additional ozone treatment of the process water resulted in a 68 million litre saving on fresh water in 2013.

Cradle to Cradle®
The launch of DESSO EcoBase®, our backing specifically designed with disassembly and recycling in mind, is a significant step forward. Due to its innovative composition, the polyolefin based layer of the DESSO EcoBase® backing is 100% safely recyclable in our own production process.
Carpet tiles with DESSO EcoBase® have achieved Cradle to Cradle® Silver Certification reaching a level where up to 97% of the materials are positively defined.*
Desso is proud to have achieved a Cradle to Cradle® Silver certificate for an entire carpet tile product.
*Positively defined = all ingredients have been
assessed as either Green (optimal) or Yellow (tolerable)
according to the Cradle to Cradle® assessment criteria.
DESSO EcoBase®
Our Fundamentals
All non-recyclable fractions will be used as secondary fuel in the cement industry.
Recycled yarnFrom the onset, Desso recognised that in order to achieve its Cradle to Cradle® goal, co-operation and commitment is needed from key partners. Today, over 50%* of our carpet tile range contains ECONYL® yarn. ECONYL® is a yarn made from 100% regenerated nylon including post-consumer yarn waste from Desso’s Refinity plant.
ECONYL® is produced from recycled post-industrial and post consumer Polyamide 6 carpet waste, and is fully recyclable at the end of its life. Desso has joined Healthy Seas, an initiative to help clean up the seas. This is aimed at collecting abandoned fishing nets from the sea that are then turned into beautiful yarn and Desso carpets, thanks to the ECONYL®
Regeneration System.
Our Fundamentals - Cradle to Cradle® 47
Cradle to Cradle®
In 2009, Desso developed an innovative separation technique called Refinity®, which enables us to separate the yarn and other fibres from the backing, thereby producing two main material streams which can be recycled.
After an additional purification stage, the yarn (with the required purity) is returned to the yarn manufacturer for the production of new yarn. The bitumen backing (used in most carpet tiles in Europe presently) is reused in the road industry. All non-recyclable fractions will be used as secondary fuel in the cement industry.
DESSO Refinity®DESSO Take BackTM
In early 2008, Desso took revolu-tionary steps to ensure that car-pets would be safely recycled by launching its DESSO Take Back™ programme.
Desso offers clients a Take Back™ programme to ensure that products will be recycled according to Cradle to Cradle® principles. Products will be taken back by Desso after their useful life, and will be safely recycled into new carpet products, or used in other recycling initiatives.
DESSO’s Take Back™ and Refinity® programmes have received funding from the European Union.
Our Fundamentals

colour. Whether a colour contains ECONYL® and the exact % thereof can be found on our website: www.desso.com.

Circular Economy
Our Fundamentals
Cradle to Cradle® and the transition to a circular economy
In their latest book the co-founders of the Cradle to Cradle® concept say that the goal of upcycling, “is a delightfully diverse, safe, healthy, and just world with clean air, water, soil, and power – economically, equitably, ecologically, and elegantly enjoyed.”
This vision is close to our own as we have at Desso been following Cradle to Cradle® principles since 2008 – a concept that calls for a smarter way of designing products and processes so that we have a positive impact on the environment and human health.
This fits with our corporate vision to ‘make the floor work for our health and wellbeing’ with carpet products driven by an innovation process based on creativity, functionality and Cradle to Cradle®.
At the heart of Cradle to Cradle® and the related broader concept of the circular economy – a restorative system in which materials are recycled in a healthy way – is the desire to design out toxicity whether that be in plastics, paints, textiles and so on. We spend 90% of our time indoors and therefore people should expect – and are increasingly becoming more aware – that suppliers and designers ensure that the most positively defined chemicals go into the products that end up inside four walls.
So, material health is a core element of Cradle to Cradle® and the circular economy.
The world’s resources are finite and this philosophy enables companies to start creating take back systems with the ability to recycle materials in a healthy way. Instead of dumping precious materials into landfill or burning them in incinerators we are able to take them back and recycle the ‘nutrients’ into technical or biological loops over and over. In this way, businesses collectively can meet the demand from the growing world population without depleting the planet’s resources or damaging its environment.

Our Fundamentals - Cradle to Cradle® 51
Circular Economy
Our Fundamentals
It provides a basis for us to achieve the following:• Create products that contain positively defined materials and contribute
to health and wellbeing;• Draw on renewable energy reducing carbon emissions and dependence
on fossil fuel energy which is prone to price hikes;• Be less dependent on newly extracted raw materials as you gradually
start to close the loop and use more of the post-customer materials to make new products;
• Maintain high standards for water stewardship including the goal to ensure the water that leaves a plant is at least as clean than the water it goes back into;
• Contribute to better product design capability leading to goods made of healthy materials and designed for disassembly and recycling at the end of the life cycle;
• Develop existing and new social fairness policies and commitments as regards fair labour practices, human rights and so on across the supply chain.
Going circular is, therefore, likely to strengthen a company’s commercial success, increase its innovative capacity and make it less exposed to raw material price hikes. In fact, the circular economy could be worth billions of dollars every year to industry. In the EU alone, the savings made through using circular models could amount to between $380 billion and $630 billion per year, according to a 2012 report from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and McKinsey & Co. And this was calculated on the basis of a ‘subset of manufacturing’. A third report, Towards the Circular Economy vol.3: accelerating the scale-up across global supply chains, found that: “over US$1 trillion a year could be generated by 2025 for the global economy.
Desso, with its circular economic model shaped around Cradle to Cradle®
design is well placed to take advantage of this new industrial innovation.

Carpet Lease
Desso and De Lage Landen, a global provider of leasing, business and consumer finance solutions joined forces to offer Desso’s customers a carpet leasing service option. This is a critical step in Desso’s transition to the circular economy.
Through leasing Desso offers a full service to its customers including installation, cleaning, maintenance and eventually removal. Instead of owning the carpet, customers view it as a service provided by Desso, who will take back the carpet at the end of its life for recycling. Via this leasing construction collection of old carpet products is more easy and positively contributes to closing the loop.
