Welcome to

A Story of

This is our sixth year producing this show- an ever changing and eclectic exhibit of amazing student work in apparel design.

This show features designs from ten student designers from the Collection

Design class, lead by Professor Natalie Minori Sconce. The designers were challenged with design a collection from scratch, fit to their

models in just twelve weeks. The results are impressive.

The show is developed, organized and produced by the Fashion Event Production class, lead by Professor Leslie Asfour.

They have worked for the past three months developing the show, recruiting designers and models and hair and makeup stylists, food and beverage providers, sound and lighting specialists, photographers and

videographers, swag bag goodies and a site for this amazing event.

SJDC has produced some brilliant talent from its Fashion Program. Students who graduate enter the industry as fashion designers, magazine

publishers, retail store owners and buyers, visual merchandisers and stylists. They work everywhere from the local industry to the Bay Area, LA,

New York, London and Milan!

We are pleased to showcase this emerging talent in this incredible venue.

Thank you to LINCOLN CENTER

for the use of the space and to all of our sponsors for their support.

Sit back and relax and enjoy the show!

ART & GIFT FAIRS The Fashion Program hosts two Art & Gift Fairs, one each semester. The event features artisans and vendors who sell their wares at the college in a two-day fair. Featured merchandise includes jewelry, home décor, skin care, cosmetics, soaps, candles, ethnic décor and accessories and more. Many of the items are hand-made and one-of-a-kind and can’t be purchased in stores, so the fairs have become very popular with customers looking for really unique things! The Fashion Club’s Art and Gift Fairs are held each semester, usually in April and October. Check the Fashion Program’s web site for upcoming dates.

The Collection Design students were challenged with creating a collection, from scratch, using and inspiration and theme, fitted to a specific model for the runway show. They had to complete this collection in fifteen weeks. The designers are full-time students, juggling this class with their other classes, jobs and family commitments.

The Event Production class was challenged with designing and producing a show that would blend the eclectic looks of each collection into one cohesive presentation. They had to find a location, sponsors, caterers, beverage suppliers, staging and chairs, equipment, lighting. They had to develop the press kits and marketing pieces and distribute to the media and outlets based on the target audience. In between planning the show, they planned and produced the Nearly New Sale and the Fashion and Interior Design Exhibit, participated in A Soolip Wedding and Sacramento Fashion Week. They will also be hosting A Date with the Designers tomorrow.

Marisol Machuca Marisol Machuca's interest in fashion began as a young child. She attributes her keen desire for designing and sewing to her mother. She has been in the fashion program at San Joaquin Delta College for four semesters. Her spring-summer collection is designed for the young woman who desires functional yet elegant pieces. The specific collection is inspired by the shape and color of flowers which she has integrated into her design by using soft flowing fabrics. After graduating from Delta College, Marisol is going to continue working towards a higher degree and would like to one day own her own boutique.

ThuyTien Nguyen ThuyTien Nguyen graduated from Bear Creek High School. She started attending San Joaquin Delta College right after high school, while at the same time working in retail. This is when she fell in love with the fashion industry. In 2009 ThuyTien decided to enter the San Joaquin Delta College Fashion Program to get a better understanding of how the fashion industry works before the apparel reaches retail. ThuyTien’s collection is inspired by sheer fabric’s movement and fluidity. She wanted to incorporate these into her Spring Resort Wear Collection.

Kablia Virathone Kablia Virathone graduated from Fred C Beyer High School in Modesto and continued to CSU Chico. She started out as a Communication Design student, but soon found it was not the right thing for her. The only thing left to do was start over so she moved back home. After trying a few things out, she randomly stumbled upon the Beginning Sewing class. She has since been in the Fashion Program at San Joaquin Delta College for 2 Years and is also part of the Culinary Program. The key inspirations in Kablia’s collection this spring are simple femininity with a hint of Victorian and Ethnic blends. She is not focused on becoming a famous designer but instead on creating clothing for “Real People” of different shapes and sizes that fit comfortably and also still looks stylish and fashion forward. Kablia would like to own a small boutique where she could sell her designs as well as other great designer’s creations. She feels the future is a blank canvas in which she can design however she wants.

Kyle Gajeton "Ever since Kyle Gajeton was eight years old, he has wanted to be a fashion designer. In the Fall of 2010 when he enrolled in the San Joaquin Delta College's Fashion Program, his dreams started to become a reality. He is finally here fulfilling his goal of designing for a fashion show. His design concept starts with the basic idea of bringing the future to the runway. Kyle is heavily influenced by the celestial feeling you get when you look up into the starry night sky, and think of how we are all a small part of one huge universe. His collection is very futuristic incorporating bold three dimensional shapes with pops of metallic silver. After Delta, Kyle hopes to move to New York City and fulfill his aspiration of becoming a well-known fashion designer. He hopes to be successful and eventually own his own label. "

ThuyTien holds an Associates of Arts in Fashion Design and an Associates of Art in Fashion Merchandising. She hopes to get an opportunity to work under a skilled designer and learn how to run a fashion house, so that she may one day run her own.

Shoua Xiong Shoua Xiong grew up in Marysville, CA and graduated from Lindhurst High School of Olivehurst, CA. She has been in the Fashion Program at San Joaquin Delta College for two years. She is currently pursuing her Associate Degree in Apparel Design and wishes to also study Merchandising. Early on as a young girl, she was exposed to and was taught the Hmong hand sewing called "Paj Ntaub" through her mother. It influences her creativity as a designer tremendously. Her plan is to continue to broaden her fashion vision and continue to grow into the fashion industry. Her dream is to open her own brand line in the future. For her Spring/Summer collection, she was inspired by Western styles. She incorporated some of the outstanding Western features into more modern looks. Shoua states, "I love the unique attitudes it exudes. It is more than just being west. Spontaneously, the attitude of each garment speaks to you on a personal level whether you can associates with it or not.”

Kathy Vang Kathy Vang started her fashion education at Ronald E. McNair High School where they offered R.O.P. and fashion design courses. After she graduated, she decided to take it a step further and applied at Delta College’s Fashion program for a degree in apparel design. It is currently her 4th semester in Delta College now, and not only is she majoring in apparel design, but is going towards a degree in fashion merchandising as well. The inspiration for her Fall/Winter collection is based on the characteristics of minerals and gemstones. She focuses on accessories becoming a part of the garments in this collection - along with the vivid hues of gemstones. After Delta College, Kathy plans to obtain a Bachelor's Degree in the Academy of Arts University with the overall goal of moving to New York to continue building her career as a Fashion Designer

Karyn Faszer Karyn Faszer has been a student of fashion at Delta College since 2009. She is fascinated with the subject and enjoys her studies immensely. For this collection, Karyn took inspiration from the book “The Garden of Eden” by Ernest Hemmingway. Images of its setting in post WWI France as well as the exploration of gender relevance and the evolution of its characters helped shape the direction of the collection. Karyn is looking forward to furthering her skills and education in the industry once her studies at Delta are complete. One day she hopes to work as a freelance designer and have the knowledge and expertise needed to teach this subject matter either the construction or the history and cultural aspects so that she might encourage others as she has been encouraged by her instructors here.

Zandra Manner "My name is Zandra Manner and I grew up in beautiful Amador Country, where I still live with my wonderful family. I have been involved with Delta's fashion program for two years. I would say that the inspiration for my collection comes from 18th and 19th century English and French costume. In particular, I am very fond of the corsetry and ornamentation of formal attire worn by both men and women. I like the structure and formality of dress and the act of dressing these features are what inspire my design. I like costume and how an article of clothing can say so much without a work spoken." "After graduating from Delta, I wish to pursue my volunteer work with the wardrobe department at the Sacramento Ballet. Eventually I would like to design for period films while working as a freelance designer."

Izamar Rodriquez Izamar Rodriquez was born in the Bay Area and moved to Manteca California at a young age. At age 10 she had begun drawing sketches and knew she wanted to grow up and be in the Fashion Industry. She was taught basic hand sewing by her mother, when in high school she actually learned the proper way to sew. Izamar is a lover of theater, while attending East Union High School in Manteca she enrolled in theater classes all four years. The inspiration for Izamar’s collection is a photo of New York City, the glimmer of lights, the burgundy colored sky, and a touch of lace. Izamar’s goal after graduation is to work for a Fashion Designer, and one day becoming a Designer for her own brand.

Monica Sailors Monica Sailors has had a love of fashion for most of her life. She learned to sew while still in elementary school and has been making and designing clothing ever since. Though she didn't initially pursue fashion design as a career, the passion for it has stayed with her and she is now working on a career change into the fashion industry. Monica has been attending classes at Delta for a year and a half, and wants to turn her love for design into a business of her own. She favors formal and bridal fashions and hopes to follow in the footsteps of designers such as Vera Wang, Carolina Herrera and Georgina Chapman of Marchesa. Monica has a soft spot for the days when people dressed for the occasion, and her first collection is aimed at those who have opportunities to step beyond their everyday wardrobe. She aims to blend elegance with comfort using beautiful fabrics and flowing lines. This Fall/Winter collection has pieces for both day and evening, and Monica is proud to present it to you.

FASHION EVENT PRODUCTION CLASS

Students in the Fashion Event Production Class produced this entire show from development to production. To

prepare for this event, they were involved in several other events, including the Nearly New Sale, A Soolip Wedding in San Francisco and our model workshop to help models develop their walk for this show!

OUR EVENTS THIS SEMESTER LEADING UP TO THIS SHOW

NEARLY NEW SALE The semi-annual Nearly New Sale is a one day, pop up store, with amazing inventory that was new or in like new condition. All proceeds from the Sale went towards the funding of this event and the Story of Design, our annual exhibit of student work n Fashion and Interior Design, which took place yesterday at Delta College. The success of this event is due to the generous donations from retailers and manufacturers who support the program and to the dedicated customers who come and find amazing bargains! We received donations from retailers including Gump’s in San Francisco and local retailers including Flair, Gary Long’s Jewelers, With Garden Flair, Maxine’s Bridal, Bellas Bridal, Pret, PDC, City Girl, CR Porter, and the Haggin Museum Store. Designer Julienne Weston from Westonwear in San Francisco sends brand new women’s apparel, as does Cut Loose Apparel in San Francisco. The sale in April was one of our biggest yet! Look for our next sale in November. A SOOLIP WEDDING Soolip Founder, Wanda Wen and her team Erica Ahlin and Brooke Barnes produce one of the most stylish gatherings of all things beautiful for one of life's most inspirational moments – the wedding. This annual celebration presents a distinctive and well-edited collection of personally-selected resources for the discriminating modern bride seeking a wedding reflective of Soolip's contemporary and refined aesthetic. Delta College’s Event Production class was the only group of students who were invited to participate in this exclusive event. They worked with the production team to develop the goodie bags, to greet guests and provide services to make their experiences exceptional. They had the opportunity to be a part of an event of impeccable caliber and see the inner workings of the event from a behind the scenes vantage point.

A Note From Wanda: “Our fabulous interns from San Joaquin Delta College blows Wanda a farewell kiss!    Erica, Brooke and I, from A Soolip Wedding, received the most wonderful, inspiring, thoughtful and loving packages from Leslie and her awesome students at Delta College. If all young people were as conscientious and dedicated as them, this world would be an amazing place. Thank you!!! Xo”

MEET THE CAST

KETTY I'm a young girl filled with dreams and aspirations. I was born and raised in a tiny town called Divala, located near the Costa Rica border with Panama. My family and I moved here to Stockton when I was ten. Even though I have lived most of my life here in the states, I have and will never forget my hometown. In my eyes and heart it's the most beautiful place on earth. My grandfather Wilmoth Moreno will always tell me, " Ketty never forget your roots and where we come from." I think that culture and faith have always been a really big key to my life. I sing and play the guitar in a "Rondalla" which is pretty much a group of approximately 16 guitarists and soloists. We play at church and also in concerts. The purpose of this group is to preserve the romantic music and culture. Besides the Rondalla I am also church of the presentations youth group coordinator and Hispanic youth representative. I really keep myself busy. School requires a lot of my time but I somehow manage to have a life outside of school and maintain a part time job. I went to Creekside elementary school, Delta Sierra Middle School, Bear Creek High School, San Joaquin Delta College and this fall I Will attend Sacramento State. I am only two years away from completing my Civil Engineering BA. My dream is to design and build a bridge. I also want to travel the world. My father always tells me "traveling is learning," and I wish to travel and learn. I absolutely love to model and wish to continue modeling. But, modeling has always been a side hobby for me. I know that beauty does not last forever and very few models make it big. Actually only one in a thousand become models and their career is very short. I have my mind set on becoming an engineer. I am a strong believer that we are the architects of our futures. At this moment I Am designing and constructing my future and at the same time having fun with my present. While attending high school I knew I wanted to go to Delta college. At the time I was not do sure I wanted to become a civil engineer. In my first semester at Delta I took a volleyball course and one day a young girl told me to go to a modeling casting for a show. So I did and ever since then I've been modeling for the Delta fashion shows. I had the opportunity also to model for Sacramento Fashion week in February for Natatlie Sconce.

MEGAN I knew I wanted to be in fashion when I was in elementary school. My mom gave me a barbie show fashion kit. I was always playing with it, making née designs with the clothes, and making business offers with my other barbie dolls. When I was in sixth grade, my teacher used to call me "the queen" because he said I walked like a model. When I went to delta, I didn't really know what I wanted to do, so I thought taking a fashion course would be fun. After a couple weeks, I fell in love with it! When Professor Asfour was asking for models for the fashion show, I thought this would be a great start to learning more about modeling. I never would have expected to be pick to be on the cover of the profile magazine. Now I am doing photo shoots for local photographers and going to modeling auditions, trying to build up my profile. I plan on getting an AA in fashion design or merchandising and then transferring to down south, hopefully being able to sign with an agency and make my mark in the fashion world.
