key objectives

• Lack of quality housing for increasing population and ‘hidden’ housing at uncontrollable rents

• High unemployment• Multiple deprivation• Lack of community facilities• Desire for more balanced retail offer• Several contrasting zones that don’t connect or relate• • High use of private transport and not pedestrian friendly• Gasworks site with potential for redevelopment• Strong character and identity of Southall around Broadway

and South Road• Religious and cultural diversity• Strong tradition of local shops and markets

• to unpredictable future needs of Southall

• Develop a walkable set of neighbourhoods with accessible public transit

• Emphasis on provision of high quality housing at a range of tenancies

• • Provide vibrant, characteristic public spaces• Introduce sustainable green credentials to improve

masterplan key

This is the final presentation board that I produced for the masterplanning module of my MA. It is a response to a site area in Southall, West London, which provides a flexible framework and coding system for a long-term development plan in the area.

The drawings were done by hand, scanned in and then coloured and finished in Adobe Photoshop CC. The boards were compiled in Adobe InDesign CC.The submission included a design report and a 10 minute presentation.

v

Site Planning in Borough, Southwark

These drawings were submitted as part of a design report that proposed a site plan for a development opportunity area in Borough. It included an urban design analysis of the site, options, a final proposal and a financial valuation.

The strategy was to re-orient the site area southwards, connecting it back into the urban fabric and to create a neighbourhood centre for the wider area. This includes a new landmark primary school, public space, pedestrian boulevard and a park to front onto the major junction.

Resources for families: National Trust

These are examples of work I completed while working for the National Trust at Anglesey Abbey as the Community and Interpretation Officer. I directed the Family Engagement Project and was thus responsible for producing learning and play resources for families.

The adventure map was complet-ed according to my original idea and design, with the in-house illustrator completing the final illustrations. It is now available for families to buy on property.

The activity guides that I produced are available for families to borrow and lead their own adventures around the site. The map was part of a series of promotional materials I developed according to teh National Trust brand guidelines for the national 50 Things to do Before You’re 11 3/4 campaign.

Games

Natural necklace• Cut a stick of elder into short pieces.• Hollow out each piece using a thin stick.• Find things for natural beads such as leaves, catkins or seed pods.• Thread them onto a piece of string.

Pea shooter• Find a piece of elder about 15cm long.• Hollow it out with a small sharp stick.• Peel the bark off the ends.• Decorate the pea shooter with paint.• You could also scratch patterns into it.• Find your ‘peas’ - something small enough to blow out of one end!

The woodland in the Wildlife Discovery Area is packed with all kinds of stick, for your games, crafts and adventures.

Use this guide to help you unleash your imagination!

Stick quoits• Make four circles from bendy sticks by tightly weaving them.• Put a big stick in the ground.• Arrange four sticks around it to make a biggish square.• Each person has four goes in turn. • You get 2 points for getting it over the stick, and 1 for in the square. • The first to 21 points wins!

Stick tower challenge• Make two or more teams.• You have 15 minutes to build the tallest tower - with nothing but sticks!• It must be free standing.• Make it harder - can it stand up for 5 minutes on its own? • Try blowing it over!
