Sustainable Design Representative Portfolio Woolpert’s portfolio of sustainable design capabilities includes the following projects: • Toledo Air National Guard Squadron Operations Building—Woolpert designed an addition to the Squadron Operations facility to house a Survival Equipment Shop. Going beyond the client’s requirement of LEED® Silver performance, our design team and LEED program managers achieved LEED® Gold and 30% energy savings within the project budget. • Public Service Park at Northern Kentucky Sanitation District 1 Headquarters—The site was envisioned as a public demonstration of stormwater-quality enhancements that could be integrated into typical site development. We introduced swales, willow staking slope stabilization, permeable pavements, bio-filtration, under- and above- ground detention/retention and stream bank restoration onsite with educational signage and demonstrations. The resulting site plan created a treasured community park with interpretive trails and an amphitheater for outdoor education programs. Woolpert’s integrated approach provides clients with sustainable and cost-effective design solutions.

• Danforth University Center—The center achieved LEED® Gold Certification by the USGBC. As the project’s civil engineer, Woolpert created a site design that imitated the natural hydrology, protected water quality and included a cistern to capture rainwater for irrigation. Pervious pavers were used for the pedestrian walks along the fire lane, allowing rainwater to infiltrate the ground. Extensive new plantings improved the campus environment.

• Camp Perry Design/Build Photovoltaic Array—Woolpert designed and built a 63-kiloWatt, 972-panel photovoltaic (PV) array at Camp Perry, which included all permitting, site work, foundations, framing, panel installation and electrical distribution system upgrades, including tying into the base’s existing energy management system. The PV array reduces harmful emissions and provides energy independence for the owner.

• City of Aiken Low-impact Development Retrofit—Woolpert teamed with the city to win a green infrastructure grant to renovate portions of historic

downtown to reduce storm water run-off and pollution downstream in the Sand River. The project retrofitted parkway medians into pedestrian-friendly parks with bio-retention swales for storm water infiltration. Pervious concrete, asphalt and grid pavement improvements in parking areas will decrease the volume of storm water that caused damaging downstream erosion.

• Ohio State University Energy Master Plan and GIS—Woolpert assessed the entire OSU campus of more than 22 million square feet of campus buildings and 1,700 acres of land to create a comprehensive infrastructure master plan. Our team identified the health and capacity of the campus’ steam, chilled water, water, sewer, electric, gas, roadway, lighting, data and telecom infrastructure in an integrated GIS. Our series of recommended projects were developed and sequenced to maintain uninterrupted services, support campus growth and significantly reduce campus energy use.
