site

the site is located along BoulderCreek, near the Boulder PublicLibrary. the area is popular forrecreation in the summer, andpedestrian traffic is relatively high through the area. the areaimmediately surrounding the site is a popular destination inBoulder year-round.

circulation

Cutting directly across the site is a mixed-use trail that follows the creek. This trail is the defined pathway that is nearest to the creek; however, the path is still several meters from the water.

concept

Because the closest pathway is stillsome distance from the water, it is desirable to create an opportunity for more direct access and interac-tion with one of the area’s promi-nent features, the creek. Foot traffic is drawn down the bank to the water’s edge.

form

A basic geometric form is sliced and shifted to juxtapose the natural elements of the area.

The main pedestrian access to the creek passes down a ramp through a slice cut in the otherwise basic geometry of the pavilion. The high walls create a sense of compres-sion to heighten the natural experi-ence after exiting the passage.

An observation platform is perched halfway down the bank, amidst the creek foliage.
