COMPUTATIONAL WORLDMassive increases in sensors and processing power make the world

a programmable system

SUPERSTRUCTURED ORGANIZATIONS

Social technologies drive new forms of production and value

DEFINITION

• Ability to represent and develop tasks and work processes for desired outcomes

• A design mindset is a way of thinking that continuously evolves, changes, and adapts.

Main points of design thinking:1) Practicing a methodology2) Allowing any idea, regardless of quality, to

appear on the table before it is judged.3) Taking risks

4) Continuously striving to improve upon a current situation or condition, in an endless cycle.

WHY IS THIS SKILL VITAL FOR WORKFORCE SUCCESS?

• Humans have always tried to design or "program" the world for desirable outcomes using existing tools and techniques.

• People are recognizing a responsibility to govern the human-remade world and to use new, powerful scientific and data tools.

HOW IS DESIGN

MINDSET IMPORTANT IN LIFE?

IMPACT on the WORLD of WORK

• Discoveries in neuroscience are highlighting how profoundly our physical environments shape cognition. –Sensor networks, bio-monitors,

pervasive computing, and a host of other new technologies.

–People will increasingly use new knowledge to design their work environments to achieve specific goals.

• Beyond cognition, we will design new organisms for specialized purposes using tools of synthetic biology, such as specialized bacteria for ocean cleanup.

• At the larger societal level, we will view social interactions and networks as part of the design ecology.

• We can design interfaces that influence judgment and behavior

SOME PRINCIPLES of DESIGN MINDSET

• There is no limit to learning.• For every problem, there is a solution.• And for every solution, there will be a

problem. • You are your loudest audience.• No one key works for every lock.• Judgment does not come before a trial.• If you can’t see, try changing glasses.• Enjoy the journey, and you will enjoy the

destination.
