For many of the magazines they work on, they have had the client for a long time and so have already produced magazines for them. Often they like to keep the layout of the pages similar so that regular customers would be able to find the ‘review’ section in a similar place as the last issue when flicking through.

Bellow shows the flat plan of what the layout would be like, including advertisment space.

The company uses FTP (file transferring protocol) which is a worldwide hard disk. It allows two parties to access the database who have a password and username.

This is what the client uses to send over and exchange adverts and writen text to the company.

As well as designing magazines the company is also often asked to produce logo and advert designs. these designs are by Toni Barrington, who is part of the Magazine Production company team.

Test is one of the magazines they design. and here shows the origional logo design for online but which is also seen on their magazine which is published. they then asked the company to change and re-design this.

What I learnt from observing the company:

The process of producing a magazine from start to finish. and then the final stages, such as sending the magazine to print.

Interaction with clients, for example to ensure they are happy with the design and layout.

The design and colour schemes in each magazine. (use of style sheets).

I learnt about technical information, for example: saving files, colours when printing, collaborating colour on the computer screen, functions us-ing Indesign and the Printing side of the work.

Recommended work and research:

I was advised to get some work experience at Print Shops/Printers. as the technical side of the work being printed is important to know and it will help me gain knowledge when I set my work up to print. It will give an insight into how the designed work often prints
