History

Fred H. “Pappy” Rohr, a sheet metal expert by trade and one of the original builders of the Spirit

of St. Louis, had long toyed with the idea of starting his own manufacturing company. On

August 6, 1940 that dream became reality when a few close associates of his in the aircraft

industry met at his home to draw up plans for the Rohr Aircraft Corporation. By the following

month, five employees were working in a rented 20,000 sf brick building located at 8th

and J

streets in the wholesale warehouse district, east of downtown San Diego.

During the winter of 1940-41, construction began on a new 37,000 sf building located on 20

acres of bayside property in Chula Vista. During construction, the business continued to grow

and desperately needed office space was utilized in a rented barn next to the construction site.

By June 1941, the company was in full operation and had expanded to 183,000 sf of working

space, while the original investment of $150,000 had grown to almost one million dollars.

When Rohr Aircraft Corporation moved to its new headquarters in Chula Vista, its first major

contract was for B-24 power plants (the plane was being made by Consolidated Aircraft

Corporation, later known as “Convair”). Fred Rohr had founded the company on the idea that the

aircraft industry would benefit from a “feeder plant” that constructed and supplied parts and

assemblies to aircraft manufacturers. He believed, and later proved that his company could make

specialized components at a lower cost than the prime contractor could produce them.

This was the first time a sub-contractor had been entrusted with the manufacture of a power

package, and the idea was so successful that by 1945 Rohr had delivered 31,760 units for the B-

24; 5,607 for the PB4Y2; and 520 for the PB2Y3, for a total of 37,887.

During the 1950s, rising defense needs prompted Rohr Aircraft to build three new facilities: a

plant at Riverside, California, that occupied 645,190 sf on 95 acres; in Auburn, Washington, the

plant occupied 49,271 sf on 48 acres; and 28,525 sf at Winder, Georgia. All of the land was

owned by the company, except for Winder, which was leased from the city. At that time, Rohr

Aircraft built power packages for Douglas DC-7s and Boeing’s B-52 bombers, KC-135 tankers,

and 707 airliners.

3

By 1965, Rohr had produced more jet engine power plants and thrust reversers than any other

manufacturer in the world. That same year, Fred Rohr died on November 8th

, due to a massive

stroke. His passing precipitated a change in management and direction, and for a brief time

during the 1960s, the company successfully diversified into satellite tracking antenna, rocket

motor components, deep submergence vessels, modular housing, ground transportation systems,

and even toys.

In 1969, Rohr was the successful bidder on 250 rapid transit cars for San Francisco’s Bay Area

Rapid Transit District (BART), and two years later, the company acquired The Flxible Company,

an Ohio-based manufacturer of city transit buses. Rohr also received a contract to build 300

transit cars for Washington, D.C. But after a period of severe losses, the company chose to

refocus back onto the aircraft industry and during the 1970s, began producing the large aft

sections, nacelles, and pylons for the Air Force’s Airborne Warning and Command System

(AWACS) aircraft, used on the Boeing 707. They also produced components for the Lockheed

C-5 transport planes and the Grumann F-14 fighter jets.

In 1980, Carl Sadler, a 10-year member of the Rohr Board, was installed as Rohr’s chairman,

president and CEO, and was able to overcome the heavy losses accrued over the past decade.

Upon Sadler’s retirement in August 1980, Harry Todd succeeded him and continued the steady

improvement and growth in propulsion system design. Rohr’s fiscal 1989 sales were a record

$1.045 billion with approximately 70% on commercial programs (Airbus A300, A310, A330,

and A340; Boeing 737, 747, 757, 767; and McDonnell Douglas MD-80, MD-11, MD-90), and

30% on government (Boeing KC-135 and E-3A/E-6A; Grumman F-14 fighter; Lockheed C-130

transport and C-5 transport spares; space shuttle and Titan solid rocket booster casings).

Rohr’s core products were nacelle systems and pylons, which they continued to manufacturer

successfully until the company was sold in its entirety to BF Goodrich in December 1997.

Goodrich Aerostructures Group, was acquired by United Technologies Corporation in 2011.

Frederick Hilmer Rohr (born Hoboken, New Jersey, May 10, 1896; died San Diego, California,

November 8, 1965) entered the aircraft industry as an independent metal parts manufacturer in

1923 and in 1925 became a general superintendent of the Prudden (later Solar) Aircraft

Company for four years where he developed a punch-and-die “drop hammer” system. He later

worked in supervisory positions for the Boeing Aircraft Company in Seattle as a sheet metal

engineer, and in 1935, with Ryan Aeronautical Company in San Diego, where he formulated his

ideas for the mass production of aircraft sub-assembly components. He resigned as factory

manager from Ryan in 1940 and formed his own company, the Rohr Aircraft Corporation.
