Description
The ABB VersaPad padmount switchgear is a medium voltage
metal-enclosed switching product designed for outdoor instal-
lations.
The VersaPad is a dead-front design, where all energized com-
ponents are enclosed within an inner grounded steel compart-
ment, providing superior safety in comparison to the live-front
padmount designs. The dead-front feature enhances the opera-
tor safety since all active electrical devices are not accessible
after opening the enclosure doors. Contamination formation on
live parts are also reduced on a dead front design, increasing
the product reliability. The switch is operated through a side
pocket eliminating the need of exposure to high voltage during
routine switch operations. The padmount unit consists of three-
phase load-break switches and/or single pole fuses.
To improve safety and increase personnel protection, fuse ac-
cess doors are positively latched in the closed position and
mechanically interlocked to prevent access to fuses without
disconnecting and parking the 200 A load-break elbow.
VersaPad highlighted features
− Dead-front design providing added safety and higher
reliability.
− Industry standard footprint allows easy one to one replace-
ment of several field existing units.
− The VersaPad padmount switch utilizes the ABB VersaRupter
switch as the main component. The VersaRupter is a field-
proven switch applied worldwide with millions of units in
service. Technology, combined with the arc extinguishing
system, makes the VersaRupter the best load break switch in
the market.
− The bolted modular design facilitates maintenance and allows
for quicker field repairs.
− The cross bus is insulated using high quality heat-shrinkable
insulation tubing which provides superior insulation reducing
partial discharges and future flashovers besides contamina-
tion cumulation.
− All ABB padmount units are provided with a high grade
powder-coated finish. The powder-coated finish provides
durability for outdoor installations and increases product life.
Components
The VersaPad consists of four major components: enclosure,
loadbreak switches, fuses, and cable terminations.
Enclosure
As a result of a safety-driven project, the ABB VersaPad has a
number of features added into the design to make it highly tam-
per resistant, helping to protect the personnel and public alike.
The dead front enclosure improves the safety of the operator
when switching the device.
The VersaPad is manufactured using 11-gauge steel that pro-
vides high durability and rigidity. The unique modular design
makes it easier to service the units in the field or in the shop.

VersaRupter - The ABB load break switch
The VersaPad utilizes ABB’s VersaRupter load-break switch.
The VersaRupter switch uses air blast arc extinction technol-
ogy which eliminates the need for additional insulation barriers
resulting in a reliable design. As the load breaking switching
device, responsible for opening the circuit, the VersaRupter
is the main component of the VersaPad padmount switch. In
combinations with industrial current limiting type fuses or expul-
sion type fuses, the VersaRupter switch ensures control over the
full range of overload and short-circuit current for underground
electrical distribution.
The VersaRupter Switch is well known around the world.
The switch delivers an advanced interrupting technology and
proven, dependable performance in a compact design. The de-
sign of the VersaRupter switch meets and exceeds up to three
times the mechanical endurance listed in ANSI C37.22-1997.
VersaRupter switch features
− Puffer arc extinguishing systems allows for a high number of
operations without excessive wear
− Tight phase spacing without the requirement for inter-phase
barriers
− Single spring snap action mechanism guarantee the switch
fast opening or closing avoiding arc during switching operati-
on and damage to the contacts
− 100 open/close operations on nominal current, and 1000
mechanical operations

Fuse termination compartment
The VersaPad is offered with multiple mounting options for a
variety of industry-standard current limiting or expulsion type of
fuses. The fuse compartment is designed with multiple safety
precautions, including mechanical interlock at fuse access
doors that positively latch in the closed position to prevent ac-
cess to fuses without disconnecting and parking the load break
elbows. Each fuse is accessible only when fuse access door
has been unlatched and pivoted to the open service position.
Switch termination compartment
The VersaPad is provided with industry standard termination
compartments. The loadbreak switch is offered with 600 A
bushings (and can be offered with a 200 A bushing well), while
the fuse termination is offered with 200 A bushing wells.
Cross bus
The padmount switchgear utilizes an aluminum bus as standard;
however, a copper bus is optionally available.
All bus connection joints are nickel plated for aluminum and sil-
ver plated for copper bus. The cross bus is insulated using high
quality heat-shrinkable insulating tubing.
The cross busbars are connected to the VersaRupter (lower
terminations) by means of branch connections. Insulating boots
cover those joint connections.
Bus connections have full round edges and are rated at 600 A.
Bushings
Switch terminations can be fitted with standard bushings or
bushing wells upon request.
The VersaPad bushings meet the IEEE standard 386-1995
requirements for 15/27 kV devices.
The bushing is designed for use with another insulated con-
nector component such as a dead-break elbow. The bushings
are rated for 600 A and accept all standard separable insulated
connectors.
Bushing well
Each fuse termination is supplied with bushings wells, which
meet the IEEE standard 386-1995 requirements for 15/27 kV.
The bushing wells are rated for 200 A and accept most industry
standard connector component. ABB can supply the connector
component upon request.

Fuses
The fusible element in the current-carrying protective device
melts when exposed to excess current. Optional fuses provide
a means to interrupt the current in the circuit when there is an
overload or short-circuit current. ABB offers the flexibility to use
the industry-standard fuses on the VersaPad design.
Fuse holder or end fitting
An assembly that provides a means of making contact between
the fuse and the contacts or clips of the fuse support.
Bushing insert
The bushing insert threads into a bushing well and provides the
same function as a integral load-break bushing. Bushing inserts
are designed for use with another connector component, such
as a load-break elbow.
Fault indicator
Fault indicators are used to monitor cable currents for fault
conditions. A sensor is mounted on the cable and an indicator is
mounted to the inside of the door and is visible from outside the
unit through a window. ABB does not provide fault indicators;
however, an optional fault indicator mounting provision can be
offered to facilitate the installation of a fault indicator in the field.
Key interlock
Kirk Key interlocks ensure a pre-determined sequence of opera-
tions to prevent personnel injuries and equipment damage due
to improper operation.
Three different industrial interlocks are available:
− To prevent paralleling of switches in compartments 1 & 2*,
and to keep the load fed from either source, two single-key
lock assemblies, and one key are provided (Model 6, 9, 10,
11, 13)
− To prevent opening the fuse termination compartment doors
unless all switches are locked open, two single-key lock as-
semblies, one double-key lock assembly, and two keys are
provided (Model 5, 6, 9, 11)
− To prevent paralleling of switches in compartments 1 & 2,
and opening the fuse termination compartment doors unless
all switches are locked open, three single-key lock assem-
blies, and one key are provided (Model 6, 9, 11)
Fuse storage
Provisions located in the fuse termination compartment doors
for storing spare fuses or end-fittings are optionally available.
Please consult your ABB sales representative for more informa-
tion on the accessories available for the VersaPad padmount
switch.
