    November 2012

If there is one thing fo

r certain during these challenging economic

times, it is that we, as organizations, all nee

    d to pull

together in the same direction. Your Des Plai

nes Park District continues to develop new re

    lationships, while nurturing

existing ones with the City of Des Plaines, Sch

ool Districts 62 and 207, service clubs, comm

    unity organizations and faith

    based groups, local business establishments

, as well as individual volunteers. Our philos

ophy is to improve the health

and well-being of Park District residents by h

elping folks stay active during their precious

leisure time. But, we do not

and cannot do it alone! By partnering with th

ese local organizations, we are able to leverag

e and maximize the full array

of talents and resources available in our Park

    District.

Fall Fest 2012 was just such an example of w

orking together with a number of communit

    y organizations, including the

Chamber of Commerce, Des Plaines History

Center, the City of Des Plaines Police Departm

    ent/Emergency Management

Agency/Health and Human Services, Local R

    estaurants, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church

, Friends of the Parks, Rotary,

Kiwanis, Optimists, and our devoted Milita

    ry Veterans.

We broke ground for construction of Chippe

wa Pool in late August. The new facility is sc

heduled to open in June 2013

and will include many modern features that

we are certain will be enjoyed by all. The bu

    dget, which is $3,255,000, will

be paid for without the need for referendum o

    r a special tax increase.

The renovation of Sesquicentennial Park wa

s completed in early November, including th

e installation of a new ADA

accessible playground, the creation of a rain

garden area, and a refurbishing of the gazeb

    o.

Friends of the Parks is a fun group of Park

District residents that meets bimonthly to

    discuss district projects, plan

special events, and provide resident input on

district programs. If you would like to partic

ipate, you are invited to join

us at the Leisure Center. Please call our Execu

tive Director, John Hecker, at 847-391-5089, o

    r visit www.DPParks.org for

    additional information.

Park Board Meetings are held on the third Tu

esday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Davi

    d L. Markworth Board Room

of the Administrative and Leisure Center at

2222 Birch Street in Des Plaines. You are alw

ays welcome to join us; your

input is important to our success.

On behalf of the Board of Commissioners of

the Des Plaines Park District I invite you to r

    eview the information that is

included in this seasons edition of the Spectr

um. I hope you will find a program, activity o

    r special event that interests

you or a member of your family.

As always, we appreciate your comments, sug

    gestions and ideas.

  • PEOPLE AT THE PARKSMeet Ron Lewis. Ron is the part-time Camp and Youth Program Coordinator in the Recreation Department. Ron has worn many hats since first coming to work for the District in 1981 as a Lake Park Camp Counselor. Over the years he has been a Learn to Swim Instructor, Youth Basketball Supervisor, After School Program Supervisor, and Day & Overnight Trip Supervisor. According to Executive Director John Hecker, If the program involves kids, chances are Ron Lewis had something to do with creating it. Ron is what I like to call one of our All Stars. He relates very well to youth as well as their parents, and has been a mentor to many current and past staff members.

Ron is a Des Plaines native, with a degree in Biology from Loyola University. He originally planned to enter the world of medical research, but his experience working with children at the Park District led him to go back to school at Northeastern University to get his Education Degree and teachers certificate. For the past 25 years he has taught 6th8th grade science at St. Marys School in Buffalo Grove, where he also serves as the Student Council Moderator.

Some of the highest program growth areas in the Park District are our School Day-Off Programs, Holiday Programs, Middle School Drop-Ins, Late Night in the Park, and Fantastic Friday events, said Superintendent of Recreation Linda Traina. Ron is the reason for this growth. He has a true passion for what he does, and always wants to see our youth develop their recreational and social skills.

    Q. What do you like most about your job? Variety and the interaction with people. Everyday at the District is different and the involvement with kids, parents, and staff is always rewarding. The staff at our District are fantastic. It has been great to see many of the children in our programs and special events go on to college, get degrees, and have careers in recreation or education.

    Q. What do you like the most about Parks and Recreation? I see the Park District as much more than just babysitting, and I think that our parents see it that way also. We build social skills, nurture friendships, build self-esteem, keep kids active, teach them to encourage others, and try new things. It is all about building relationships throughout their lives.

    Q. What is the most significant change you have seen at the Des Plaines Park District? There have been many. The facilities have expanded and have provided many advantages for families. The technology that is now used in the Park District is very advanced and keeps people informed about what is going on. Our participants come from all over the Chicago area now because of technology and the high quality reputation that the District enjoys.

Ron Lewis at the Day Camp building on Lake Opeka.
