DEPARTMENTAL VISION

To encourage an appreciation of and enthusiasm for science that students will use for the rest of their lives.

To inspire every student to become scientically literate and environmentally responsible, and to help them to recognise the wonder of the science all around them.

“BEING THE BEST YOU CAN BE”

“HELLO”

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The science department is a friendly, hard working and enjoyable place to be.We are highly regarded within the school by both students and staff.We have a group of teachers, lab technicians and support staff that work together as a team, support one another and strive to get the very best out of every student in our charge.

We aim to create an environment in which students have good relationships with staff, are taught the relevance of science to daily life and are encouraged to develop skills as independent thinkers and learners.

ABOUT THE COURSES

All students at KS3 and KS4 follow a balanced science course. At KS3, students are taught for 3 hours (3 lessons) every week. At KS3 use our own innovative course. With topics such as “Pole to Pole”, “Flash, Bang Wallop” and “No Place Like Home” we are able to deliver the KS3 programme of study via broad, relevant contexts.

At KS4, students follow AQA GCSE courses. More than half choose to take “Triple Science” for 7.5 hours per week while the rest choose to study Trilogy (Double Award) Science for 5 hours per week.

Very high standards are achieved at GCSE. In 2018, we gained an ALPS grade 2; 88% of the Science grades achieved were 4-9 and 37% were 7-9. Our Trilogy groups achieved 81% 4-9 while our “Triple Science” results were even better with 92% gaining 4-9 in biology, chemistry and physics.

At A-level we offer AQA Biology, OCR Chemistry (Salters), and AQA Physics. The Sciences have consistently been some of the most popular and successful post-16 courses; we currently have approximately 70 Biologists, 70 Chemists and 30 Physicists and projections suggest that this will be maintained next year.

MEET THE TEAM

The department currently consists of 12 teaching sta, 3 of whom are part-time. We also have 4 lab technicians (term time only) and a science TA. Posts of responsibility are held by the following sta;

Sta joining the department are expected to be skilled classroom practitioners and good team members who are science teachers rst and subject specialists second. They should have high expectations of students, and not only be aware of new developments in teaching and learning but also be able to put them into action in the classroom.
