Department Profile
Name of the Department: Centre for Distance Education (CDE)
1) From the Desk of Head in 200 words:
Centre for Distance Education conducts B.A., B.Com., M.A., M.Com., MBA,
M.Com. (Valuation of Real Estate)., P.G. Diploma in Translation etc. Courses and all these
courses are distance mode. For Teaching - Learning Self Instructional Material (SIM) Print
Based, Contact Session, where educational councilling is provided to the students by the
study centers. During these Contact Sessions Participatory Methods are used such as Think
Pair Share, Mastery Learning, Blended Learning, MOODLE etc.
MBA, M.Com. (Valuation of Real Estate), and P.G. Diploma courses incorporates
field based visits and writing it’s report etc. where students experiential learning took place.
Same courses students have to complete the research based projects and which enables to
develop the problem solving skills among the students.
2) Brief History of the department along with present focus in academic &
research – 150 words.
Shivaji University Kolhapur (SUK) has external Examination system from its
beginning for those students who are not able to take conventional education. In 2005 from
the grants of Distance Education Council (DEC) of Indira Gandhi National Open University
(IGNOU), New Delhi, University established Centre for Distance Education (CDE) and its
actual functioning starts from the year 2007. This external section is converted into the CDE
by offering Self Instructional Material, Contact Sessions etc. facilities for fulfilling the
students’ academic needs. CDE offers two under graduate courses i.e. B.A. (Languages and
Social Sciences) and eleven post graduate programmes those are M.A. (Languages and Social
Sciences), M.Com., M.B.A. (Distance/Executive). M.Sc. (Mathematics) and M.Com.
(Valuation of Real Estate), Post Graduate Diploma in Translation and CDE plans to start
new need – based courses in future. The distance learners opt different subjects and courses
of their choice from available programmes/courses.
